Snuffbox Snobbery

As I’m sure you’ve noticed, I’ve posted on a range of snuffbox topics, offering my opinions about the merits of horn and silver over other materials, but of late, I’ve been reconsidering my stance. A good modern plastic offers advantages over most other materials - cost, consistency of size and mass, low heat-transfer, doesn’t absorb moisture, is light-weight, etc., etc. As I think of it, this material offers real advantages, not least of which is cost. It should be possible to democratize the pocket snuffbox without sacrificing quality. I’ve been privileged to see and hold an older bakelite snuffbox, and can say without hesitation that it was every bit the functional and aesthetic equal of any similar box made of horn. So, where does one find these today? I’ve checked with Bernard’s in Germany, but they’re out, and are looking for a new supplier.

I’ve seen a few bakelite snuff boxes on the UK ebay, I can’t justify buying the one that’s on at the moment though.

um…I still prefer the weight of my silver snuff box inside my pocket.

I am now, (a snuff-box snob that is) I just picked this little baby up from the Snuff store and I really like it so far. It feels so sleek and stylish and everyone that has seen it thus far all thought it was very nice. So far it seems to be leak proof, but I haven’t put a scotch in it yet, only mcchrystals and some hedges. Anyway, I plan to post some pictures of my own, but my camera batteries were dead.silver snuff box
