Ok guys, I am still finishing up on populating all the snuffs, although I am more than halfway done. Site design still needs a little massaging, and I will continue to implement improvements as I come up with them. BUT,

for all intents and purposes you can start using it. Nothing I change now is going to break anything. http://snuffbox.org

I hope you find this useful, and I will continue to respond to your suggestions and feedback. Thanks!

Hi cakeanddottle

Congrats for putting up this new site for snuff reviews. With snuff reviews going down, there was a void of sorts in spite of snuffhouse.

For 6 photo snuff you need to add two more brands namely Medicated no.6 and Medicated no.66.

Wishing you all the best.

T

This is going to be great! I was so disappointed when snuff reviews went away.

X

@cakeanddottle Ok, see a lot of tweaks that should be made. Looks like a lot of info was copied from Snuffreviews. However, a lot of what was there was inaccurate. I was working with Al to correct a lot of it, but he kind of dropped off. I’m happy to work with you on it, here, or if you prefer by PM.

C

@Xander nothing was copied from snuffreviews other than the reviews by juxtaposer that I’ve transferred, I used your Snuff List FAQ, but I also found areas where the FAQ was incomplete and hadn’t been updated, so I referenced Mr Snuff to fill in the holes not covered in the FAQ. If anything is incorrect, post or PM and I will fix it.

C

@SIX PHOTO done, thanks

H

I found Taxi snuffs on the site by doing a search but I didn’t find a link to Taxi on the homepage. (Could be it’s just not finished yet.)  Maybe it’s the same for other less popular brand names as well.

C

Taxi is made by Swedish Match, that’s what they’re filed under

H

Imagine that… Here I always thought that it was made in South Africa!

C

well the maker is often not the brand name on the tin, that’s why search is useful. I will be trying to integrate review data into search results as well, and I should also implement tags for common terms like toast, sp, menthol, anise etc

C

Taxi is made in South Africa, by Swedish Match.  Most if not all of SM’s snuffs are made in SA, I think some of them even belong to Philip Morris now.

W

Could you add SnuffStore Specials or Bespokes, these are not main line snuffs but would appear to be good quality

C

yep, and there are already some Bespoke there

C

AND, the taxi and magnet snuffs have been corrected and are under Phillip Morris instead of Swedish Match now

B

just put up my abraxas club review.

C

and it’s up! I am going to keep moderation enabled. I know it isn’t as nice having to wait to see the review you just posted, but it keeps all the garbage off the site. I promise to check for new reviews at least once daily, more on days I don’t work the day job.

A

Could we have one thread for all things snuffbox.org related?

C

yeah I will post everything in this one now, you can lock the others if you’d like.

A

ok, thanks, keeps it tidy:)

M

Wow, cakeanddottle, I am impressed with how much time and effort you are putting into this. Thanks a bunch. ps–how much coffee do you drink, lol?

C

you mean how much snuff have I been sampling, just got two orders in the mail yesterday. I’m a little wired

J

Would you be willing to implement some sort of automated snuff review database backup download thingamajig such when and if you go the way of the dodo just as snuffewviews did , there would be a chance that one of our members had downloaded it ?

C

aventhusiast.com

note the last time I updated. I still maintain it. I won’t stop, and if for some reason I did I would give the domain and the site backup to someone here

J

That is not my concern , I trust you will maintain it for as long as humanly possible. But things can and do happen , such as large boxes of metal speeding down the road. I don’t want to sound grim , but snuffreviews.com did go down and even though it’s still accessible through Internet voodoo magic (http://web.archive.org/web/20110203003024/http://snuffreviews.com/ ) it’s not a fun task to parse through data that was not meant to be parsed and extracted. Edit: in the link , the reviews themselves were not captured , so this further enforces my point.

C

I could possibly implement some way to download  a csv output of the reviews. It wouldn’t be pretty, and it would be much more useful than digging through a cached version of a dead site. If someone suggests something better I’d be all ears.

Taxi and Magnet should probably be listed under Leonard Dingler. True, Dingler is now owned by Phillip Morris South Africa, but for ease of use it probably best to keep the snuffs listed to the company identified on the tin rather than a shadowy parent company. This way a newcomer who is not in the knowlege of who owns what behind the scenes can find it more easily. Incidentally, Best Blend is also now owned by PM, but likewise witht the Taxi tins they only list Best Blend on the label. They only make one snuff, Wilson’s Menthol Snuff from Wilson (Top Mill) (Pty.) Ltd. of Rustenburg, S.A.

T

Cakeanddottle, We’d be happy to help with costs/sponsorship.

S

I just put up my old Gawith Apricot review (awaiting approval), it’s practically the opposite of the one already on there so it makes for an interesting contrast!

T

Just put my first snuff review up, thank you cakeanddottle

C

You’re welcome!

Trust me guys, I know there are a few things about the site that could be improved. I’ll keep working on it.

A

I really love the simplicity of it, as a complete It dummy and instinctive hater of computerish things it is a very refreshing and sleek format, I would really like to see it stay that way. I know I’m just an old luddite but simplicity is sooo nice.

C

@Snuffster

the one thing I really want is to have one login instead of having to provide your details every time you leave a review. This would also allow the possibility of viewing all of a user’s reviews.

I also want to see the aggregate rating and the number of reviews next to each snuff on the manufacturer page.

These are things that are easier said than done with the components I am using, but I will shoot for it. Also, I agree, for a site like this simple is better. I am not looking at changing the layout, just adding useful functionality.

A

You are given two words, I can get the first but the second could be anything - unless there is some trick to it?

T

Snuffster, Are you related to Bob in anyway?

B

only by species.

J

Homosapien or neanderthal?

A

Something in between - Homothanderhal. We are small, ape like creatures living mostly off grapes and leaf products.

J

So i thought i’d throw something onto the pile: http://hastenetworks.com/ http://hastenetworks.com/snuffs/view/4f6565b4-2464-47e0-bd98-27352fd96c58 If anybody wants to test out the interface , sign up here: http://hastenetworks.com/users/register I’ll activate your accounts* and you can take it for a spin. needs not re-enter username/pass for every review , i’ve got data aggregation going , fully configurable user editable manufacturer’s , snuffs and reviews and all that jazz. If you guys like it and suggest improvements , i’ll fix it up some more and publish it as open source so cakeanddottle , snuffhouse , and mr.snuff/roderick can all run their own copies and perhaps sponsor me with snuff for life haha. Also , searching works real nice too , Seriously though , it only took me ~2 hours to set it up the way it is , so I can turn this into something really powerful in no-time. * = accounts active by default for today , it is an alpha test . Later on I’ll manually approve or switch to email validation. For now it’s free for all. play nice! /FOR FAME AND GLORY!

B

“Something in between - Homothanderhal. We are small, ape like creatures living mostly off grapes and leaf products.” same thing I was going to say.

M

Site’s beginning to look good. One suggestion–the search ignores spaces. When I typed in ‘sp’ every snuff with those consecutive letters came up. Also, would it be possible to append brand name to the results?

C

@Mouse I’ve been working on the last point, I’ll address the search issue

M

Bob, did you ever see that episode of “Gilligans Island” where they ate those nuts and could hear each other’s thoughts?

B

Nope never seen it. Sounds like a fun nut though.

C

@Jack instead of reinventing the wheel, what would actually be more useful would be adding the finishing touches to what I’ve already thrown together. The only thing that is beyond me is adding a sitewide login to interface with the plugin that does the reviews. The amazon style is ok, but a site login and the ability to search a user’s reviews would be preferable.

I just added the category display to single snuff pages, so there is one small improvement.

C

I have also implemented a new search function that should represent an improvement

J

@cakeanddottle: That’s precisely the reason I prefer to write my own applications rather than rely on wordpress. Not to say there’s anything wrong with your approach , I was just bored in the middle of the night and needed a break from actual work.
My offer still stands , if at any point you’d like to suggest improvements and receive a free copy of the result , give me a shout. I’m pleased with my search function , test it by searching for “absinthe” or “brown”

M

bob, lol. Yes could be interesting!  I guess I made an odd connection though

T

How many days should we expect to wait to see a review posted. I did one for Toque Vanilla and although my rating is there, the actual review doesn’t show up. I have done a few reviews now and all have gone through in about 24 hours. This is the first one that got muddled up.

C

@thorgrimnr

you have found a bug. Now I just need to figure out what it is. It doesn’t seem to affect other pages, and I was able to post a test input on that page. I deleted your Toque Vanilla review because it would not show up no matter what I did.

I will look into this until I figure out what happened. In the meantime continue to use the site and report any weirdness here so I can fix any buglets. Thanks, and very sorry you ran into a problem. I’ll sort out what caused that.

T

@cakeanddottle thanks for letting me know. I’ll give it a few days and repost my review.
