I have a Patrick Collins Triple-Tech in Oak. I absolutely adore it, and it is used daily…actually hourly. I do have one small problem though. The lid tends to warp in the middle with the center dipping down and the end pointing upward. 75% of the time the issue is aesthetic at worst but the other 1/4th of the time for some reason it bends enough that if I am carrying a fine grind or something a little on the dry end it seems to leak out slightly. I’ve had lightly dusted pockets and such on a few occasions. I am assuming this is a moisture and temperature related issue causing the lid to warp so I have tried rotating where I carry the box on my person and so on a so forth. Does anyone else have this happen with their snuffbox? If so what is the best way to carry it on one’s person to avoid it and is there (I doubt there is) any form of long term correction? Just curious. Aside from that the Patrick Collins boxes are the best investment I’ve made next to the snuff that goes in them!
If I had a snuffbox(which I don’t), I would carry it in my inside pocket of my jacket, or in my shirt pocket. I would not carry it in my pants pocket.
Pat Collins boxes are superb but they do tend to be a bit fragile - I used one exclusively for a few months and it literally fell apart, I use it’s replacement in rotation now.
I haven’t experienced the warping that you speak of. Only mild expansion and contraction due to the material and varying outside humidity. Oh, and I carry mine in my pants pocket daily. Just have to remember to keep the car keys in the other pocket.
Are you using moist snuffs in it? PC boxes work best with toasts and scotches.
I actually use it to carry both moist and scotches (not a toast fan myself). I usually carry it in the inside pocket of my leather vest or shirt pocket, though lately I have been carrying it in my jeans pocket as that is where the warping seems to occur the least. I also frequently use a leather holster that was made for Zippo lighters that the Triple Tech fits nicely into to carry on my belt.I’m guessing it has to be humidity related per the moisture of the snuff I am using since I notice the problem is at it’s worst when I am toting schmazlers in it or something fairly moist like Sun Sher. The warping occurs parallel to the grain along the vertical so it is probably expansion/contraction related. I just wondered if anyone else had the same thing happen and had come up with any nifty little fixes for it. I still love that darn box, irregardless and will soon be adding a double compartment Pat Collins to my arsenal. Thanks for the tips everyone. You are all truly scholars and gentleman/ladies!
