I was just thinking about this: how much snuff do you think is equivalent in nicotine to a pack? I think most people, especially new snuffers, take much much tinier pinches than a lot of us do. They’ll talk about a 25g taking weeks to finish when for me at least it’d be a matter of a few days, maybe a week at most. Sometimes I wonder whether I take in a greater or lesser dose of nic a day than I did as a smoker.
I wondered the same thing when I was vaping, I would experience a thumping heartbeat that I never had when smoking.
That’s probably a little difficult to answer, as the nicotine absorption rate is probably very different between snuff and cigs. Then there’s the whole: “how much is wasted/burned away” and whatever else.
Yeah, I think it’s more about how much it raises measurable nicotine plasma levels. There was some article around saying that snuff did a pretty good job, and that snuff users could have higher levels than smokers, depending on type uses, method of intake, quantity and so on.
I agree that a direct correlation between snuff and cigarettes can barely be drawn- even in terms of mg/g taken in as they are two different delivery methods and I honestly believe some snuff takers, myself included, will adjust intake based on numerous factors such as a new type/scent, occasion, mood and even nasal readiness, whereas a smoker will smoke for the nicotine level maintenance and the ability to smoke. While both likely take snuff or a smoke for nicotine, there are in my opinion too many differing variables to link the two in terms of grams to cigarettes.
I think its more to do with the distance nicotine has to travel in the bloodstream to get to its associated receptors in the brain. Whilst cigarette smoke has a larger area to be absorbed into the blood it still has to travel from the lungs to the brain, whilst snuff is absorbed into blood vessels in close proximity to the brain.
I’d say a 25g tin in a week would be roughly about equivalent. I’m just glad I wake up now and don’t have a must smoke first thing in the morning craving. Just take my time, select an e-cig from the several flavours I have permenantly stationed on the dressor, have a few puffs (no ashtrays etc required) then get the snuff in (from many I have to hand) and lie back down again and work up the energy to complete the morning rising ritual which may well involve repeating this initial phase several times!

Oh I do like the first pinch of the day…funny how it used to be on train platform on way to work, later it moved to after buying newspaper on the way to train, then at garden gate on way out, previously it aS after breakfast, and now it tends to be upon waking up…!

Hehe. Much as I like the idea of snuff going straight from the nostrils into the brain, I think it’s still absorbed into the blood stream first, so it’s still got a way to travel. And from experience, you’ll still feel the impact faster from smoking than snuffing, even with fine, dry snuffs. But just be patient, it’ll get there in a second or two.
I’m not sure about a pack as I never smoked fags but I morally take several dozen large pinches of high dry toast or NB Madras to get the equivalent vitamin N of something like Dunhill nightcap or Einmore balkland.
Yeah I guess it’s just impossible to say; a small pinch left in the nose for 45 minutes would probably deliver more nicotine than a huge pinch blown out in 45 seconds.
Ah, here’s a link to the article I mentioned: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC1507093/ Abstract Blood nicotine and cotinine concentrations were measured in 27 volunteers before and after taking snuff. Within 10 minutes after snuffing blood nicotine concentrations were comparable to those obtained after the 10 minutes or so that it takes to smoke a cigarette. Nicotine intake from snuffing was related to the experience of the snuffer. In daily and occasional snuffers increases in plasma nicotine concentrations averaged 77.7 and 12.3 nmol/l (12.6 and 2.0 ng/ml) respectively, while the novices showed no appreciable increase. The increase shown by thea daily snuffers was comparable to the average increase of 62.3 nmol/l (10.1 ng/ml) obtained from a single cigarette by a group of heavy smokers. The peak nicotine concentrations in the daily snuffers were also similar to the peak values in 136 heavy smokers–222.6 and 226-3 nmol/l (36.1 and 36.7 ng/ml), respectively. Unusual multiple-dose snuffing produced massive increases in plasma nicotine to concentrations that have never been recorded in smokers. The similarity of the concentrations produced by regular daily snuffing and regular daily smoking suggests that the plasma nicotine concentration has some controlling influence over the self-regulation of these two quite different forms of tobacco use. The rapid absorption of nicotine from snuff confirms its potential as an acceptable and relatively harmless substitute for smoking.
I’m sure it’s been mentined many times but from my own feelings about it (and memory) smoking delivers the nicotine very immediately but the effect wears off very quickly also creating a strong craving to smoke again very soon after. I believe it’s a known deliberate ploy of the manufacturers. With snuff and even vaping I find the delivery much more progressive and smoother and in turn the next fix (for we are drug users after all) is not so urgent so I don’t seem to suffer “nico rage” to anything like the extent I used to as a smoker but I think it’s taken a while for this to sort itself out. I think my snuff use and satisfaction has stabilised nicely now as alluded to in article extract concerning regular users. I also believe I have to attribute part of that to vaping alongside. I do notice that my concentration can dip greatly if I lets things get to low, or to high! Sometimes in fact most times with vaping and snuffing together I feel very relaxed and I’ve got to like that. Just trying another new tobacco juice and it’s very strange indeed. Supposed to be pure tobacco flavour. It’s almost a bit floral or perfumy with a slight musk and a tiny hint of sugar and I am liking it very much. Actually a sort of Earl Grey flavour in there somewhere so maybe it’s an SP juice? and maybe a bit of F&T French Pipe. It doesn’t really remind me of tobacco at all. It’s something new and I don’t normally like artificial stuff but this has got me. It really is very nice. Maybe my taste buds have changed since I no longer smoke? I’m sure they must have. I certainly do enjoy food more.

Off topic, but I just bought some Earl Grey, boiling up a pot now. I also did a google search on it, it’s flavoured with bergamot peel, which I never knew. Seems like a common snuff flavoring, too, so there you go.

I should have said nicotine from snuff. Would be very worried if snuff itself managed to get into the bloodstream. Come to think of it, the reason why you feel the nicotine hit faster with smoking is because freshly oxygenated blood from the lungs is quickly pumped via the main arteries to the brain whilst snuff from nicotine probably has to go round the houses in the venous system.
I like Earl Grey Tea and

You should really try the peach flavoured Badger Ale if you can get it. I think it’s called Victory. I usually have it drunk before I have time to study the name and afterwards I can’t seem to remember and I can’t be bothered googling it or going to the ale cellar (my kitchen cool cupboard to check) but an amazing find which I bought by accident while looking for one of their other ales with a similar label. Wasn’t concentrating again. Almost drooling now at the thought of it.
