The Freemasons thread got me thinking about this for some reason. I’m wondering if there is much of a snuff legacy in many of the London clubs of St James’s, you know, White’s, Boodle’s, The Carlton etc. I mean I know there must have been back in the day but I’m wondering if there has been a resurgence since the smoking ban and gentlemen can no longer take cigars with their port (I assume…) Bit of a random thought, but any members out there?
I have no idea in the U.K. but, private clubs in America allows smoking as it is private property. If anyone doesn’t like smoking they should have never signed up for the club in the first place if the main center is cigars.
@Igglet Sadly that’s not the case in London - the smoking ban holds for private clubs as well. As to a renewed interest in snuff, I’m not at all sure. I’ve visited one or two London Clubs, but I’m not a member of one.
Smoking is banned in every club/pub/restaurant in Poland as well. But I haven’t noticed any snufftaking there. To be honest, I snuffed once in a club and got asked for leaving by security (you know, it was a big 3 metres x 3 metres bald guy) but finally he let me stay but said “there is no such thing in our club. understood?”
There where two old chaps in Boodles that I have talked with who where snuff takers, one owns an very well established antique book shop in the city, and the other chap “Jim” taught me a method of taking very fine snuff such as HDT, he was an Oxford prof, I say was as I sadly went to his funeral about 11 months back, he was 98ish. He was a great chap and I would always sit and have a chat with him when I bumped into him. Based in the army in India where I believe he switched cigars for snuff. The door man tells me there are a fair few snuff takers, and once pulled my leg about a strange coat brush being a snuff removing brush (not of course that I Googled it.lol). However the only person I know is said bookseller. I went to an army dinner way back when they passed a regimental mull around and everybody seemed to dabble. Boodles I became a member on account of my grandfather being a member…I would be happy to take anyone in, if they pay for the drinks!
You’re on! Next time I’m in town it’s my round!

Cigars with port…yuk. Cigars with bourbon or scotch…yum !
I’ve never got on with Bourbon. To me it tastes plain odd. Each to their own. I like rum with a cigar, or rather I did when I smoked them.
I was a guest at the Garrick Club in London a while back and they had snuff for members / guests in the traditional horn. It was very highly perfumed but not as dry as I was expecting so presumably it must get topped up or replaced fairly regularly. I was not able to find out which brand of snuff it was.
I don’t know why my comment above has appeared twice. After I pressed post Comment I got a message saying that it would not be posted until checked by the moderators - which I have never had happen before. I believe there is a way that I can delete the duplicate post but unfortunately I have forgotten how so apologies for the duplication.
Sorry for joining this late. I am a member of the Savile Club, one of our members is the Hon. Secretary for snuff, and we have a rather splendid snuff box made from a ram’s horn. I must ask what is the snuff, although many of us bring our own.
I’m the only snuff taker I’ve seen in the East India, but I’de be amazed if I was the only one. There is a very nice snuff mull upstairs in one of the dining rooms however, so there was certainly a culture of it at some point.
There is one at The Oriental too, come to think of it.
