Sorry if this has been posted before but I had a quick question. I decided that my man cave needed some organization, a little input from the misses prompted me to do so lol, and I found a humidor that I never used. It was a freebie back when I ordered a good bit of cigars. I decided to put all my tins in there and they fit nicely but one issue kept pestering me. When you get a humidor you are told you have to season it, or break it in, because the Spanish cedar they use will suck all the moisture out of your cigars if you do not set the humidity properly and allow it to settle for a few days. Well this humidor was never broken in and I am worried that it may dehydrate my snuff. Like I said, all my snuff are the Toque, Wos, and SG tins. None of them or in loose bags are anything like that. I do have a plastic tin of Dholakia Swiss Chocolate that doesn’t seal very well and a larger metal tin of McC O&G that doesn’t fit as tightly as the other tins too. Will they be ok or should I take them out for fear of dehydration?
Should not have to take them out @Grim. It is still a good idea to ‘season’ however. Moisten the inside slightly. I do this with a clean rag that has been moistened with distilled water, wiping down the inside of the humidor. you should then be able to replace the snuff containers inside right away inasmuch as they are already ‘protected’ vs a cigar that at best has a cellophane sleeve. I would however still have some means of keeping the environment inside the humidor where it should be. Likely it arrived with a hydrophilic insert you can just moisten. every few weeks just go ahead and moisten this again and voila… Good Luck!!!
I actually have some of those heartfelt beads that you just add a small amount of distilled water to and they keep the environment at. 65%. I’ll just season it then store to be safe.
I would put tape around the lids. Electrical tape will be fine. If you don’t plan on having hundreds of snuff this is good for short turn storage. For long term small air tight glass jars.
Came across one of these in Mom’s canning dept. Nice and I will be ordering some more. http://www.freshpreservingstore.com/ball-collection-elite-half-pint-8-oz-wide-mouth-jars-set-of-4/shop/229661/ Like these too. http://www.freshpreservingstore.com/ball-4-oz-quilted-crystal-jelly-jars-set-of-12/shop/383220/
I’ve been using the 4oz jars successfully for while. They sell them at my local supermarket for about $9 a dozen.
This is a classy jar I found in my mom’s canning dept. Kind of nice to keep out on display and pinchable too. http://www.freshpreservingstore.com/ball-collection-elite-half-pint-8-oz-wide-mouth-jars-set-of-4/shop/229661/ A little pricey but unique.
@jpsavage How much snuff does that hold, 200 grams?
@basement_shaman I put 50 gm of Princes in and just about full. Advertised as 8 oz. They make a larger size. 16 oz http://www.freshpreservingstore.com/ball-collection-elite-pint-16-oz-wide-mouth-jars-set-of-4/shop/229675/
Ultimate snuff storage? Came across this while looking for something else. http://freshstor.com/ Air/light tight and humidity controlled.
