I’m being dragged to Paris for a week by my significant other and was wondering if anybody knew any snuff related sites worth visiting or any tobacconists that might have a decent selection of snuff?
I’m not aware of any extant French manufacturers but historically it seems to have been just as popular there as it was in the UK which still has a few mills etc left.
If you like rustica and don’t mind finer grind and low moisture, the three neffa-type snuffs might be right up your alley.
Good luck finding them, though - it’s not a popular commodity there. Oral tobacco products (Chema, Makla, La Prise brands), on the contrary, are abundant and can be found rather easily.
If you have time and really want to find nasal tobacco (tabac à priser), visit at least ten Tabacs (shops licensed to sell tobacco products) in different parts of the city before arriving at false conclusion that snuff is unobtainium in Paris. Findable it is, just keep in mind that the search might be way more time/legs-consuming than you could think, and don’t expect to find it at the very first Tabac.
Now if you happen to stumble upon Neffa Bledi and Neffa Souffi and fall in love from the first pinch, make sure to procure solid amount - as far as I know, the former is only sold in France and Spain, the latter - only in Tunisia and France. Online tobacco stores don’t carry them.
“A couple of fragile 17th century clay pipes can be seen behind glass, next to period engravings showing the remains of identical ones scattered between the feet of early tobacco smokers. A snuffbox spills out snuff a hundred years old ; blond and slender Virginia tobacco contrasts with short dark leaves from Santo Domingo.”
