Hi, I know there’s a number of pipe smokers here, also. So I’m wondering if anyone else has this problem? Snuff sensitivity from pipe smoking. In order to stay off of cigarettes, in the last year I’ve added snus/snuff/occasional e-cigarette and in the last month and half pipe tobacco. Things were fine until I added the pipe tobacco which I don’t want to quit either and now I’m sure I won’t. Now most of my snuff burns and I’m really upset because I do love snuff and I have pounds and so many tins that I’ve stocked up on because I enjoy it so much. I’ve researched it and I can’t find anything. I tried to watch which pipe tobacco might be causing the sensitivity and I’m can’t figure that out either. Right now I have a wide variety. Prior to the pipe tobacco(month and half ago) I never had any problems and I don’t have any nasal problems, which is why I enjoyed the snuff so much. I even quit snuff for 3 days, but the burning has come back. I’m sure it’s not the snuff in so much I’d had used so much previously and no problems…but, the combo of pipe tobacco and snuff. I’ve just ordered a long stem (14") pipe. Of course, I’m not sure this will help. Any thoughts? Thanks!
Are you blowing the pipe smoke through your nose when you smoke it?
Are you blowing the pipe smoke through your nose when you smoke it? LOL, well, I don’t know. But, you’ve made me more conscious to watch out for that…I very well could be. Being a newbie at it, I’m doing real good now not to inhale for being a 40 year cigarette smoker. But, I had to work on that one, too. Thanks, let me look at this…maybe that’s what I’m doing wrong.
The reason I asked (and I know even less about pipe smoking than you do lol) I’m taking a really wild guess that maybe somehow the strong smelling smoke of the pipe if nose-exhaled could change your sense of smell/nose sensitivity
Edited, not applicable any more.
I shall smoke a pipe and partake in snuff back-to-back, as I did last night. I never had any issues with that. The only problem that I had last night was finishing up what remained of my bottle of scotch (better denote that I mean whiskey in this forum, haha).
I snuff while I pipe… and sometimes put snuff in with pipe tobacco. Never had any problems.
just a thought. if the pipe tobacco you are smoking is Virginia based, the acids may be causing a " burn" if you are exhaling through your nose. A common complaints from Virginia smokers is “tongue bite”. This is cause by smoking too quickly with VA or VA/PER blends. From what I understand, the acid levels are high in these particular types of tobacco’s and cause a burn or sore in the mouth. This may be happening to your nasal passage if you are exhaling through your nose. Again… just a thought. nightcap.
Actually, tongue bite can be caused by any tobacco, although pure Virginias tend to be the worst, due to their high sugar content. However, the problem is not acid burn, but the opposite – caustic burn. Tobacco releases ammonia and other alkaline chemicals when burned too quickly, or a too high a temperature. To prevent tongue bite, smoke slowly, sipping gently from the pipe. That’s very difficult for a lot of recovering cigarette smokers to do, however. Best bet for a novice piper is to start out with a Burley-based over-the-counter blend like Prince Albert or Carter Hall. They tend to be very forgiving if your puffing cadence gets away from you (and it will, at first). Then, after you’ve learned how to smoke a pipe without puffing like a steam locomotive at full speed, you can move on to more complex blends.
Thanks for the clarification PipenSnusnSnuff.
