I don’t know how you guys feel, but for me the situation with SnuffReviews is intolerable. Something must be done. Surely we could perhaps collectively work something out? Surely there is a tech savy snuffer amongst us, we could collect money for a domain and upkeep etc. It was great to have reviews at our fingertips as oposed to searching and hoping. Maybe you guys have some input?
@saucy_jack I think the main problem is that the SnuffReviews site had no connection with this forum so there would be no way of retrieving all of the reviews so it would mean starting from scratch. I did not really like layout of that site as it was a bit of a task to find all the latest reviews when compared with a site like TobaccoReviews but it was still a useful resource. - when it was working! I also don’t think that the software that runs SnuffHouse - although it is a database - is really suited for being used as a database for reviews. The only way that would work would be to have a separate thread for each snuff but that would not allow for all the search functions of a dedicated review database. I would certainly be prepared to help with a resource for this but my database skills are very rusty and were not that brilliant to start with! Hopefully some of the more technical users here might have some ideas.
It is a shame it disappeared, I found it a great resource.
@cris Yes, I was thinking it would need to be connected to this site. And yes, startng from scratch would be a pain in the ass. What happened to the guy running it?
You don’t really need to be tech savy, money is all that’s required. ( me and my family host a vitamin website with no web maintenance or skills. ) But I can’t help but think vitamins and snuff don’t mix! Rofl
It is a shame that its in the state it is. While I can and certainly do garner some good information about new snuffs from these forums, I found that the review site was also a great tool. For what its worth- while stateside I was curious about several different American Dry Snuffs and upon using Google I was brought right here with the top search returns.
I should had made copy’s of my reviews. Like spilling snuff on the carpet it’s gone :((
I downloaded a copy of the site for my personal use when it started to go down on occasion. Lucky me. It’s not a working site per se, but rather a snapshot (Dec. 30 2013) of the working site. All the reviews should be there, however. I’ve done some front end web design and graphic design in my time and still maintain a few client sites, but I don’t have much experience with databases and such, other than what I’ve done with a few wordpress sites. I will have some time in the next couple of weeks and I will take a look if I find a suitable stack/platorm for a review site. Maybe we can get a new version of the site up. I would need consent of all the reviewers first. Cheers! EDIT: Crap, there seems to be some stuff missing but I don’t how much yet…
Damn Mouse. Great stuff.
I can help out too but likely not until fall. Life’s gone all crazy on me 8-}

Right. I was going to mention that we already had a talk about this earlier.
@Mouse @Jari_T this is all very good! I must say I’m quite pleased. I believe we can do this. It is up to us as a community to have the adequate tools at our disposal.
@basement_shaman I think a good number of your reviews for any number of snuffs are on mrsnuff. Think many if not all are mirrors or close enough to what was on snuff review, so may be able to go back and find them there. Nvm to the above, thanks @Mouse for the archive link!
I just tried to run HTTrack on that web archive link but it won’t download the reviews. I meant to run it on the actual SnuffReviews site a few months ago when it started being up and down but I forgot. The archive does not seem to have the reviews so we cannot even copy them all manually. I guess we will have to start again from scratch unless anyone can get hold of the owner of snuffreviews who may have them all backed up.
@MrSnuff that’s a great idea! If it can be done, lets do it. But I should leave that answer to those that run this place, I am merely the catalyst. A consistent review site would be beneficial to members, potential new comers to snuff, and to your business, Dave. I know I am loathe to make blind buys…
Well, at least @saucy_jack spelled “loathe” correctly. Perhaps when St Pete de Airbus was correcting my spelling on another post he didn’t realize I was referring to a shop tool known as a lathe. Or maybe, just maybe I was talking about the wooden phase of the now defunct interior wall finishing process; lath. Bring your own plaster (BYOP).
Plaster, horsehair, laths. Hard as hell when finished, not like the glorified cardboard we build our homes out of today. :))
I see uncle Squinty is belting out the reviews again currently and they’re pretty good informatively and of course that humour. He’s building up quite a catalog and I think he’s pretty spot on with his appraisals. His mother says he looks like he’s slept in a bin and the rats have been at him again, or something like that. He does come out with some good ones.

He’s a good guy, also I believe the fact his vision is decreased that his other senses make for an excellent review. Haven’t tried the snuffs personally but obviously as we all hear as we lose a sense the others strengthen. I hope his sight can be managed and improved if possible because it’s the most beautiful sense we get but he is Definitely the best reviews on the tube
@Cigshurtmylungs I doubt his sight will be improved… unfortunately, I’m pretty positive he is blind, not just hard of sight. I wish there was something somebody could do to help. He’s a generous, informative, absolutely hilarious, walking snuff-encyclopedia with the best snuff reviews out there, in my opinion. I agree however, he’s a good guy in my book. I think @MrSnuff’s got the right idea! Is it possible to do that with any site, and do you know what goes into getting that set up? With that on the table, it seems the most practical.
That site was amazing for snuff study. I suppose I would still use it with all the new and untried snuffs that have been made. The way it was organized could be whipped through during binge orders quite easily. There was quite the society of snuffers that would leave messages behind as well. Tobacco to ashes, dust to snuff! R.I.P. @snuffreviews.com

Technology will go a long way very soon. Things like blindness and cancer won’t be scary forever
This is a real kick in the teeth to all the people that spent countless hours writing reviews for that site, luckily I’m not much of a reviewer
@MrSnuff @saucy_jack A few decades back I helped a friend restore a classic Victorian on Alameda, CA’s “Gold Coast”. Some miscreant had carved the house up into little studio apartments using that god-awful shitrock, er, sheetrock. Thankfully he’d just covered up the old lath and plaster interiors. We worked our butts off getting it back to its former glory. We went to beauty salons to get the hair for the plaster and found an old lumber yard for the laths. Hard as nails that stuff.

While I only contributed a few reviews- I found it was helpful early on in my snuffing. As opposed to having to rely on a sellers description, I could make a more informed decision based on multiple reviews from folks I “knew” from here. I would love to see a reliable review site come up. And for what its worth- when I was in the states and used Google to search for info on a few scotches, the top returns came here.
@Cigshurtmylungs I agree. But $135,000 bionic retinas are a huge step so far only for the lucky few with the funds, and gene therapy and stem cell research towards blindness on the right track but years off. Technology has been going a long way, and all the faster daily, cancer most definitely less scary already, and many other misfortunes easier to live with. However, the majority of people I meet/have met, have a medical condition and cannot afford the help they need, making technology useless beyond new self-help items on the internet and inverted chairs. So I just hope as it all progresses, more can afford technology’s successes. But heck, if Squinty is grateful to have gone blind though, I hope others have found the same because I can’t help but believe many things will stay scary for all but those well off.
I set something up here https://snuffreviews.wordpress.com/
