Hello to you all, dear snuff fellows : Certainly, nasal snuff has no best moment in the last decades to back with all his power to our society. Laws against tobacco are applied with all rigor in our dear Western Civilisation. Some Countries consider smokers nearly as criminals. Tobacco smoke, inhale smoke is really a very bad thing; I think we all alike with this opinion…but sniff snuff tobacco is a completely different thing. Even a lot of Medical studies certify snuff is a help to less smoke. Then, I am sure this is a very good moment to recover the snuff tobacco, to consider snuff taking a “normal” and maybe healthy manner. But, we, average users have not enough power to show through the Media this opinions. And now I ask you all : WHERE ARE THE WESTERN TOBACCO COMPANIES? I think they are losing the best moment to recover the use of tobacco snuff. My best wishes to you all, Pedro
Maybe it will just take more time. As others look for ways to quit smoking and discover snuff. As this happens, maybe to companies will notice a rise in sales and put a little more effort into marketing.
I alike completely with your comment. Maybe we must follow our lonely way keeping the purity of this old taking tobacco manner. Pedro
Good news Roderick!!! I would like to see your true snuffs at the Spanish Tobacconists. But here we have monopolistic laws about tobacco products and you can find only some Pöschl, Gawith Mentholated snuffs and…no more. Being Spain one of the former snuff manufacturers, if not the first one, here the snuffers are desapearing. We have no Spanish snuff brands…and we are tobacco producers!!! I think with peaplo as Roderick we may have a hope. Yours Pedro
“Snuff is definitely on the up”. Well said. 4 years later now: Is it true? Within all my friends, colleagues, family members I am still the only snuffer…
When I ask tobacconists in BC here they all say that people ask them for snuff all the time. The only reason nobody carries it is because no snuffs have the required health warnings and lists of toxic constituents.
I have bought McChrystals snuff here in Ontario Canada and it had health warnings and toxic contents in both english and french.
Really? Well, Ill have to ask them about that!
We are the Liberal party of the tobacco world: a lot in total but you never meet another.
In Germany snuffing is still a habit of only a few (“liberal”) people. Perhaps one reason is, that in Tobacco shops you can only purchase the over-mentholated stuffs. So if you do not buy your snuff via internet, you will never come to know the wonderful English snuffs here. When I take out my snuffbox and my spoon and enjoy a pinch of Wilsons Best SP or so, I am still the man who comes from the moon.
US, Boston here… VERY liberal, but unfortunetly my snuffing remains in the closet since Im in the business world. It would NOT go down well … no sireee… not a chance. (as I whip out a bullet).
To be quite honest, only my girlfriend and a few others know I take snuff on occasion. While I’m an adult who can make his own decisions I think if I told my dad he would look at me and say, “you really do that?” Snuff has become a thing viewed by many as dirty or unrefined; yet somehow a cigar or pipe implies a sort of sophistication…
@Brandasaur. I hear the same thing, but my MiL sent me a tin of McChrystals’s she bought in Edmonton, health warnings and all like @n9inchnails says. I would love to be able to buy snuff OTC, even if it was overpriced McChystal’s.
Today we will have a birthday party for my youngest dazughter with all our family here with us, round about 30 people. There will be a lot of smokers, but I willbe the only snufftaker. They all look at it as a little strange and excentric in some way. But I know: Snuff is the real enjoyment and pleasure and it’s healthier also.
@giaach I agree that the pipe is viewed as sophisticated but, from what I gather, cigar smokers are viewed as rather obnoxious to the average non-smoker. Cigars create a huge stink which a lot of people hate and it’s associated with the image of the “fat cat” businessman.
@Uwe fellow german, believe me when i say that i know what you mean. most people know what snuff is (thanks to Pöschel´s Gletscherprise and it´s rather long history on the german market) but only a few want to try. i dont give up on it anyway… not on my snuff consuption nor to give curious people deep answers about snuff and the benefit you gain when you quit the cigs and start to snuff.
Here in England, I get the impression that many people don’t even know what snuff is, or at least just think of it as a ‘thing of the past’. However, the tobacconist in town always has various kinds in stock, so there must a fairly decent customer base out there.
Dredging up an old thread****
I am pretty sure both in the UK and Germany the average person is much more exposed to snuff. In my life of 26 years I have lived in 4 states, 8 towns/cities, and I have witnessed two people smoking pipes, and no snuffers. I can’t even find anyone on here who has american snuffs sold locally aside from a few silver dollars. I’m looking for american scotches, and the idea of buying it from the UK whom bought it from America, only to ship it back to America seems insane.
However, if toque silver dollar is evidence of the taxation on snuff… then I may have to buy it from overseas.
At my local Pipe and Cigar shop the owner said he used to sell a fair amount of Wilson’s. Mainly to offshore workers as smoking was restricted to certain areas. Now he has a couple Silver Dollar snuffs and is checking to see what others may be available to him.
Locally I can get a limited selection of Scotch’s. Makes me very grateful for Mr Snuff and Toque. Personally, given the choice of an American Scotch or a British Toast…I would choose the Toast. But I do like WE Garrett and Tube Rose…
I think if the British manufacturers would get their products back in the shops there could be interest. I would target the cities that have banned all smoking in public places first.
@GreenGrass : Yes, things like White Elephant are a bit pricey for students to afford.
Everybody’s a critic…
@GreenGrass:
Watch the coarse language, consider this a warning.
Cstokes,
“Watch the coarse language” are you a Cambridge man?
My heart would jump of joy if snuff would make a comeback into the society. That would be way to cool.
They sell Sturco by McChrystals at my local newsagents in Brighton in the UK, they had a pack of 20 hanging up next to the cigarettes, I bought one when the pack of 20 was full and next time I went in they had 3 left. In fact that’s how I got into snuff. They sell other snuffs at the tobacco shop in town, though they just keep in stock whatever snuffstore.co.uk has in their top 10 list which is mostly menthols.
I think I’d rather snuff stay under the mainstream radar. The government will just tax the bejesus out of it if it made a serious comeback.
Like that really would matter to some of the serious snuffers on here who already have enough put away to last several lifetimes. lol
Snuff is certainly popular here in the Deep South, but not so much with the young crowd (myself). Within two weeks I saw the supply at the grocery store near my college go from having around six different Scotches (roughly 40 1.15oz tins) to having only three left.
Hey, whats a can of brutons or rooster cost down there man?
@JohnnyFriday : down south a 1.15oz can of most all scotches costs about 4 bucks give or take depending on the store.
@JohnnyFriday I have yet to run across Brutons or Roster in my area but the ones available locally for me go from 4.29 - 5.49.
Red Seal, Tube Rose, Dental, Garrett and Honey Bee.
Thanks guys.
I’m with oscar wabbit on this one although I would like it to be common enough where people are more accepting of it. Though nowadays some people just don’t accept tobacco period.
Im torn too I suppose. They’ll tax the crap out of it soon enough. I want them to just legalize everything and tax it… and I MEAN EVERYTHING.
If snuff caught on and became THE THING, can you imagine how many choices we would have? It blows my mind that I have several hundred choices of snuff to partake of and it’s pretty unknown with the general public.
Dammit…now I want some SoCo…ooh, SoCo and a peach snuff would be wonderful.
Got very drunk on SoCo back in the early 90s and haven’t touched it since. Just thinking about that caramel scent to this day makes my stomach turn.
@dakotas Is rooster the first one?
We are not going down this road. I am going to delete all of the post concerning the subject, please stick to the topic.
@cstokes4 Sorry, i dont want to sound ignorant but i dont get your point. Down what road ? What was wrong with my post ? Please enlight me. No offense taken.
