Snuff Recomendations

S

Hi everyone, I am a huge poschl user, but I have noticed over the past few months one of my favorits, Appricot, has started to give me some trouble in terms of plugging mr right up. So I guess what I’m asking is what’s your favorite everyday snuff to keep you feeling clear and fresh? Thanks !

D

Bruton. Menthols clog me up after a bit, but a good fine Scotch never fails to get the nose juices running.

B

I’ll tell you when it comes out. It does my nose wonders. Try the Dragun it’s great for de cloging the nose.

S

Poschl Gletscher Prise Extra and Bernard Fichtennadel are a couple of my favs for the fresh feeling.

J

I always turn to an American Scotch snuff after using something with menthol.

F

Get off the übermenthol and, on occasion, artificial chemicals that I find are the (sadly annoying) hallmark of Pöschl (and these are a pity - I always feel I could really enjoy some of their snuffs otherwise).

Try some of the more “natural” - or naturally scented - sorts from Wilsons of Sharrow or Samuel Gawith.

As well as Wilsons’ own products, Sharrow Mills also produce the Fribourg & Treyer range, some of which are exquisite.

Likewise, Samuel Gawith’s were the main supplier to G Smith & Son of London’s Charing Cross Road.  Their Black Coffee is very similar to Smith’s Café Royale; SG also blend for Snuff Store; Snuff Store’s own Café Noir is the exact same product as Smith’s Café Royale - and sold at a sensible price!

Wilsons and Gawiths both do very enjoyable (and very different) takes on Apricot.  Wilson’s Best SP is probably the best SP you’ll find; Gawith’s Kendal Brown is the original KB; Wilson’s Tom Buck or Queens are both and excellent, strong SP; Gawiths also make some wonderful, natural, “Earthy” flavours; the Fribourg & Treyer blends include many elegant, sophisticated, more fragrant sorts; Gawith’s make a couple of amazing Irish toasts: the very nutty Irish D Light, and the slightly fuller-flavoured, but less nutty, Irish D original (both of these also pack a good nicotine lift!).

S

Thanks for the suggestions everyone. I will be trying a Scotch, some Irish D light, and see if that does the trick!

For the time being saving Poschl for special occasions.

Cheers.

S

Any toast is a good choice. Flavorful toast that aren’t plain would be Wilson’s Lemon Toast, Toque Whiskey & Honey and Toque Lime Toast.

A good toned down SP is is Wilson’s Irish DH Toast # 20

D

Once again i was too lazy to make a new topic so i post my question here.

is there any dark, coarse and moist vanilla scented snuffs on the british market?

T

@dm_lasse Fresh Toque Vanilla is excellent. It’s a medium moist snuff, medium to fine grind and is wonderful.

X

@dm_lasse Can you get Lotzbeck vanilla? Not tried SG Vanilla, but I expect its not dark. However, I think that new Elmo’s reserve is.

M

Speaking of Lotzbeck, what about the one in the blue box that says mit menthol? I haven’t seen it around for a while, it’s the only snuff I’ve had that’s so cedary. I like F&T Santo Domingo, but- to me- it’s not nearly so cedary. Or what else out there is similar? Just curious.

X

Well I thought Lotzbeck mit menthol was same as Lotzbeck Premium Mild but without the menthol. So I went and had a snuff of it. The Premium Mild seems to have a piney odor, I guess you could say its cedary. I’m curious if Premium and Premium Mild are the same thing.

Haven’t saw that Lotzbeck on the shops where i usually order my snuff but thanks for the recommendations. I just have to do some searching on google to find where i can get that if mr. snuff doesn’t carry that on his shop.

M

The one I had, and I bought it twice in the course of a couple of years- had a distinct scent, to me, of cedar wood- not evergreen needles. Just like a humidor or cedar closet. I remember it was a dark blue box and although it said mit menthol, I couldn’t detect any over the cedary scent. Oh well I’ll just buy some if I can find it, but it’s probably pretty hard to get now, if Mr. Snuff doesn’t have it anymore. Guess I’m a little rambly tonight…

X

Ok, just did a bump of “mit menthol” You’ve got me pulling out all my Lotbecks! The menthol is really mild in this, but there is some. Its got a woody character, but I wouldn’t go as far as calling it cedar. Its not bad, but I’d not get it again. The Premium Mild though I would buy again. The thing LmM reminds me of, is probably even harder to get. Its Santa Caterina blue from Italy. That one has no menthol. Its red brother does, but seems more mentholly,

M

My scheme is unfolding Mu-hahah… I dunno, it didn’t seem like sandalwood to me, or pine, maybe there’s another wood that I’m not so familiar with… anyways you mentioned a snuff I’m now destined to try, is it still made?

X

Who said anything about sandalwood? No sandalwood. Yes, both Santa Caterinas are still made, but they are made exlusively for the Italian market by Pöschl under direction of the Italian tobacco agency. The best way to get them is through a trade with another member here. We have a few Italians on board. Also I see Günter has gotten some for his shop: http://www.snuffstore.de/onlineshop/index.php/cat/c64\\_Poeschl.html/page/2

M

Just because it’s a fragrant wood, one of the few I can think of. I’ll check out that link, thank’s!

edit- I forgot Ho-Wood. Also there are at least a few varieties of cedar oils that one can buy, maybe that accounts for something, who knows…

M

Wow! A lot of stuff I’d like to try there!

V

I find Lotzbeck to be quite hideous, all of them.

As a huge poschl user myself I can tell you that some of the best snuffs I use are Ozona (cherry, raspberry, president), Gletcherprise (extra isn’t as good imho, peppermint added), Radfords Premium, Kloster Andechs Spezial, Lowenprise if you like licorice, and FC Bayern.

U

Don’t forget the Schmalzlers of Pöschl. Especially the plainer Schmalzler A and Perlesreuter are worth a try.

V

Perlereuter is amazing, It is my regular morning snuff with coffee

P

I really have taken to Tube Rose, if you’ve ever smelt instant iced tea when you open a big tin of it that’s what it smells like to me, and unlike bruton and tops sweet which are fine american scotches and a bit dry, TR is slightly moist and doesn’t seem to ever fly into my throat no matter how large a pinch

Z

J & H Wilson medicated no.99 is my absolute favourite, a very powerful rush combined with a beautiful menthol flavour but with a strong scent of tobacco too.

Also, Red Bull is a must try, it’s pretty much a standard menthol snuff too, but I haven’t touched it in a while for preference of the medicated #99.

Crumbs of Comfort is a beautiful flavour, but less powerful nicotine-wise, so ideal for a beginner. Same can be said for Jockey Club.

Irish High Toast no22 is worth a mention, as its smokey flavour and strength make it another notable snuff definitely worth recommending.

Hope this helps!

M

ziggy—So If you like the J&H no99, I must ask if you’ve tried Hedges L260. Imo an absolute must for the menthol lover!

V

After getting a tin of just about every Poschl snuff, I kind of made my own table of snuffs that stood out enough to keep buying and ones that were simply not as good as others and don’t offer somthing unique enough to have on hand. When I did this I realized that Red Bull is not somthing I would order again because Ozona Original and Ozona President are just better standard menthol snuffs.

G

I too am a big fan of the poschl line, you mentioned getting clogged up and wanting a change of pace. In my humble opinion you should at least give 6 photo super kailash a big try. Go for the 45gm size since it is so nice and very reasonably priced. It will unclog your sinuses without the burn of a brit style medicated. the scent last forever. I use it daily, many times a day. I think you will love it. Special is nice as well, but my favorite is the super kailash…try it!
