Novices like me may be considering the best way to store loose or bulk snuff in reasonable quantities (30-40 gs, an ounce?) in perfectly airtight conditions. Those small jars of meat or fish paste (Princes or supermarket own brands - I have no interest) come with a very good airtight seal. I think potted meats were once assocated with botulism. The lid, with a plastic gasket al la F&T tins, appears to be perfectly airtight, and probably meets stringent food safety standards. I’ve addressed this to the UK because I don’t know if this style of foodstuff is sold elsewhere in these jars. Once cleaned and filled they remind me of the good old days when Smiths sold snuff in glass jars of various sizes. Tidy, sealed and practical I think. That’s if you can stand the original contents on your toast or in your sandwiches…
Aside from the container itself… cool, dry, and dark is also important.
some bad news fishy paste jars are not airtight after they have been opened, as the paste is put in the jars HOT and cooled down super fast after the lids are put on to make the seal its self, when opened the gasket and lid pop makeing them less than airtight. but have a look at marmite jars nice tight lid and dark brown glass to keep the light out.
I’ll second that. Properly cleaned Marmite jars are excellent for storing snuff. Even better, you get to eat the Marmite first
Use the search, there’s a ton of stuff on how to store snuff
dazz34 ‘some bad news fishy paste jars are not airtight after they have been opened…’ Yes I agree that the jars cannot be vacuum sealed again. I disregarded them at first because I thought the lid would be too flimsy. But on examination the lids are now far more robust than I thought. They twist and seal tight, and there is, as I mentioned,a gasket. This is true certainly of the Princes brand ones I’ve tried. I submerged an opened jar (where I had broken the vac seal) for a couple of hours and it appears to be perfectly water tight. I cannot say whether ‘water tight’ equates exactly to ‘air tight’, but it’s close enough for me, and I stick to the hunch that they have been manufactured to a certain standard of air tightness, even after the vacuum is broken. I am pleased with these nice glass jars, -the plastic label wrapper is easily removed, and they are easy to clean. I believe they are a better option than any of the tins I’ve received my snuff in, and possibly better than the small GH tubs though it would require further research to demonstrate this. Thanks to snuffster for letting me have another pop. I’m off to scoff some crab paste and to get a life!
Thanks for the new term ‘marmite’. Never heard of it, Amazon.com says it " is a yeast extract with a flavoring that is very similar to Beef Broth. Used extensively in cooking, especially vegetarian cuisine it can also be used as a spread on toast or crumpets. As a spread use sparingly as it has a strong flavor." Interesting, but not enough to order some!
Bet you don’t get steak and kidney pie either. Both really good but sadly misunderstood.
Marmite is actually good…my first wife was from the UK and her fam usually had a jar around the house. it IS a good idea to heed the strong flavor warning though…lol!!
If you use fish or shrimp paste jars all your snuff will smell like Dholakia White.8<). I never did like Marmite. Mum made me eat it on toast because “it is good for you”. If I refused she said I was “helping Hitler”.
All of our mother’s were a riot, huh? I’d probably try some marmite and kidney pie if it ever gets offered, the odds are slim, but you never know.
in the uk marmites marketing slogan is LOVE IT HATE IT its that good/bad just like some snuffs its a matter of taste. now twiglets a uk biscuit like crisps that taste like marmite to , and they are good with a beer or 3 … us brits eat some mad stuff beware jellied eels, haggis,ox tail soup too name a few.
I wouldn’t queue up to buy marmite flavoured snuff.
I would I could quite happily bathe in Marmite, I love it. Stefan
Yeah Stefan. I do too. I see you broke your run on SP100. Perhaps there is a place for mentholated marmite snuff. Not quite ready for it myself. Dazz34, thanks for the health warning on the glass jars. For myself, I’m confident that they will work well, but there’s no cast iron guarantee from me that they’ll keep your snuff fresh forever. They do look the part of a good old fashioned small glass snuff jar and the lids/seals are much better than I remember from ages ago, which, once opened, were just a piece of tin to be chucked away.
it would have to be chesse and marmite now that would be good . petersuki any time mate thats wot we are all here for to shair info and ideers and not forgiting haveing fun…
Nachman March 15 I never did like Marmite. Mum made me eat it on toast because “it is good for you”. If I refused she said I was “helping Hitler”. woah, dude, that’s heavy!!
Marmite and strawberry jam is a surpring combination. As a kid I loved it. Not liking marmite in our house would have been an act of treason worse than supporting Hitler. Apparently no Australians visit or we would have heard all about vegamite by now. Australia doesn’t do snuff?
I know there’s at least one Aussie on here…can’t remember who though. Marmite and strawberry jam sounds like an acquired taste to me…but heck…i like peanut butter and bread n butter pickle sandwiches, so who am i to talk about strange…lol!!!
Food was rationed during the war and for a few years after and any waste was considered “helping Hitler” by my Mum.
