Since discovering the wonderful world of snuff i have come to the conclusion that snuff is more expensive than i had initially thought, in the last 2 weeks since i started i have spent aprrox £200 on around 40 different snuffs and 4 snuff boxes. I guess my first question is this - what is it about snuff that makes us collectors rather than just snuff takers. Cigarette smokers don’t buy 40 assorted packets of cigs they usually have one brand and stick with it, in fact if i went to the shop and saw someone buy 10 assorted packets of cigs i’d think they were a bit bonkers but with snuff it just seems the most natural thing in the world to collect. Now i’m not complaining and will happily spend a lot more on snuff, i’m just curious thats all. This leads to the second question - Would anyone on this forum be happy to have just one tin of snuff and then buy another when that runs low and how many different snuffs do you need to feel comfortable.
Gud job we have only two nostrils
Big Al, my wife asked me a while ago how much I’ve spent on snuff over the past 6 months. My reply? I don’t know!! When I joined this Forum, someone, can’t remember who, warned me of becoming a collector. And that’s exactly what happened!! But I don’t mind at all. Snuffing is a HOBBY, not an addiction like smoking cigarettes, for me. I was planning to cut down a bit, then Namrata and Roderick annouced new flavours. So, I will have to order some more. Cigarettes all taste more or less the same, I smoked for more than 40 years, so I know. Snuffs are totally different from one another. I mean, you don’t buy one bottle of wine, brandy, whisky etc. People become wine collectors and spend R1,000’s on it. So why only one snuff?!!!
Oh i forgot i also bought an Osco 5 drawer desktop cabinet to keep it all in. I know it seems like a lot of money but my reasoning was that i would read the reviews buy and try the best snuffs and only place regular orders for the few i really liked which seems a nice logical argument. The problem is i have yet to find a snuff that i would not order again so i’ll admit i have fallen in love with snuff (the last time i fell in love was one wife 3 kids and twenty years ago and we are still blissfully happy) the financial implications of all this are truly frightening by the middle of next year the whole UK banking system could collapse.
Well, then you sell your snuff collection and save the system!!!
I looked over my charges for the past year and I have spent about the same on snuff as I would have on cigarettes had I purchased a carton each month at the convenience store. I’ve taken all the snuff I wanted, given some away, but most of it is still in my stash. All the cigs would have been gone by now. I think I’m way ahead in money, health and pleasure. If I had to go a few months without a snuff purchase, I could dip into my reserves. It’s those fancy snuff boxes that quickly add up. But desirable ones do appreciate in value, and can be properly viewed as an investment in fine art.
Pieter such blasphemy, however i shall forgive you after all it is christmas
I’m more of a snuff taker than collector - I’ll only buy some thing different if I’m confident i will like it. right now i have a few bits and bobs i want to use up over Christmas them i will be all out of snuff and ready for a fresh order come new year.
I have spent close to $300 on over 100 snuffs, including 500g of McChrystal’s Clove. At my current rate of 5g per week it will take me almost 9 years to use my entire collection. Does that mean I won’t buy any more snuff for 9 years? Of course not. When I see some snuff I’d like to try I get it, and to make the shipping costs worth it, I’ll get 10 or 20 others. If I were still smoking a carton of cigarettes ($50) a week it would only take 6 weeks to spend $300. Besides I actually enjoy using snuff. How many smokers can say they really enjoy every cigarette they smoke? Yeah, the first one in the morning is good, and after a big meal, but the rest are just smoked to smoke, not because they like it. So, I’ve spent a lot of money on snuff, I’ve also got about $1000 worth of liquor in my cabinet, and over $5000 invested in guns. If you enjoy something it’s OK to spend a bit of money on it. I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again I’ve spent a lot more money on a lot worse things.
Stich and leman, I’ve been thinking about this topic while ENJOYING some TOQUE W&H. Although I’ve spent quite a bit of money on snuff lately, I still have a lot stashed away in the freezer. And I have in my desk enough to last me for many weeks. I’ve actually saved a lot by buying “doubles” and “triples” because our exchange rate then was much better than now. So, I’ve “invested” some of my money in snuff like I used to do while I was still smoking cigars. Snuff matures well and even if it should go down a bit, I can always refresh it. So, all in all I find snuffing 1,000% better than smoking. I LOVE SNUFF !!! Big Al, you’ve made a clever move!!! Congratulations !!! Buy some more, you will NEVER regret it.
I don’t regret getting the 60 or so kinds I have. I use about 25g a week. I figure that if the world economy goes in the dumper I have enough to see me through and tobacco in general will be a good commodity to trade for things I need if my US dollars are worthless.
I do the same thing with pipe tobacco only not as much. Variety is definatly one of the joys of snuff. In fact I often find myself really wanting a snuff I’ve not had in a long time. Plus it isn’t as adultered as cigs. Which is one of the reasons cigs are so chemicaly is to promote brand loyalty. Snuff on the other had it’s just the tobacco and the grind that really effects the nicotine aspect so there is not the same diffrence in itch scratching with snuffs.
Some great comments a lot of common sense although i have to admit i was not a smoker when i took up snuffing (i had quit 18 months ago) i was bloody miserable and now i’m not. Taking up anything new usually requires an initial outlay and i have spent a lot more on a lot worse. I must confess to being a bit of collector but very rarely will a subject capture my interest like snuff has and was just wondering how many of us are collectors and whether i was overdoing things a little i now see the error of my thinking and will definately place fewer but larger orders in future as the shipping has definately stung me a bit. leman would love hear a bit about your liqour collection what’s your pride and joy ?
TOQUE ships free of charge!!!
Roderick, yes, smoking while still at school was sort of an adventure. I started off with Westminister 85, then moved on to Rembrandt van Rhyn, Lucky Strike, Texan Plain and eventually Chesterfield. My last brand was Marlborough, red packet, which made me cough so much that I could not ride my mountain bike. On one outing, two young girls stopped where I stood weezing and coughing, fighting for breath. They asked me whether I needed help and later insisted on calling the medics. I had to “fight them off” to leave me alone but at that moment I decided that enough is enough. No more commiting suicide for me anymore. It took me a couple of months more to work up enough courage but on the 14th of February 2007, I did it!!! I only started snuffing a couple of months later when I discovered an old tin of McChrystal’s O&G which must have been 2 years old already. When I stumbled over this forum, all by accident, and realised that I can order snuff from you and Tim, I became a serious snuffer!!! Today I’m a happy snuffer and collector. And…I ride my bike like a champion!!! I L O V E S N U F F !!!
My collection is mostly a variety of liqueurs and schnapps. I’ve also got a few bottles each of; whiskey, gin, brandy, vodka, and rum. My pride and joy would have to be my Crown Royal Special Reserve. That bottle alone set me back $80, so it only comes out on special occasions.
leman that Crown Royal does sound fine indeed, i’ve only got some jack daniels and old samuel de luxe but have a nice bottle of asbach brandy put aside. I have been getting into gin lately something i have had little experience of but bought a bottle of Tanqueray which has been diminishing at such an alarming rate that i have had to buy some Bombay sapphire to keep it company. What schnapps would you recommend ?
That reminds me, I am running dangerously low on my Asbach. I’ll have to get another bottle here soon. For schnapps I would recommend; Black Duck Cranberry, Apfelkorn (apple), and Barenjager (honey). All three are excellent, and not too sweet like some schnapps can be. I tried Taqueray for the first time last weekend. It’s 100 times better than the cheap stuff I’ve been drinking. Might have to get some when I pick up my Asbach. It’s going to be an expensive trip to the liquor store.
leman thanks for the info on the schnapps Apfellkorn is the one i’ve heard people rave about i’ll try and get hold of some soon. As for the expense i have been dieting since april lost six stone with 3 to go so its been a frugal year for me thats why i have spent so much on alcohol and snuff, really treating myself come the new year its back to the diet with a very occaisonal drink so not too worried about the money and a quality drink goes so well with a quality snuff. cheers
The Apfelkorn I used to drink when I lived in Germany was anything but sweet. Lethal? Yes. But not sweet. And Asbach is gorgeous stuff - we used to drink it after shutting time at the pizzeria I worked in in Regensburg. Congrats on the weight loss Al! I do agree, quality over quantity.
@leman- I am a pack-or-so-a-day smoker, and I must say…I enjoy every one of those cigarettes. I wouldn’t smoke so much if I didn’t. I smoke Djarum Black’s (cloves) and nothing tastes better. Not to say I don’t enjoy snuff, just saying that I enjoy smoking to a great extent. =] ~Snuffy
Ok, so you enjoy all your cigarettes, but you know what I meant. Most smokers smoke to feed an addiction, not for the enjoyment. It least when I smoked a lot I didn’t. Mmmmm clove cigarettes, it’s been a while since I’ve had one, but they sure are tasty
Big Al, if you like Gin you should give Anchor Junipero a try. Its my all time favorite gin.
Trout i might just purchase a bottle of Anchor Junipero once my liver recovers from christmas it certainly sounds a fine tipple £34.95 in the UK, incredible strength though at 49.3 ABV You’ve definately piqued my curiosity with this as good gin is very very nice indeed, never thought i liked the stuff after having some cheapo supermarket gin years back but the good stuff is hard to beat and it makes a great change when you fancy something other than whiskey or brandy.
Im not really a collector so its very cheap for me. Some of you guys get more in one order than Ive amassed over twenty odd years. As long as I have my snuff of the moment I’m happy.
hehe expensive? if you live in Brazil you would see what is expensive Big Al , i made an order from nicotinerush today and costs about 70 usd (incl shipping) this amount is about 200 bre ( Brazilian Real) , so i think you pay really low price for snuffs man , but you will love the snuff world , no doubt about !! Just an explanation: i agree with you i am just telling you that for me its worst!! !!! Merry christmas
