Snuff Mistakes

Never buy a sampler pack.

I should have known better, but they were inexpensive so I thought what the heck. The 6 Photo sampler fared passably, with some clear cross-contamination present in a few, but the Janta Indian Rustica assortment did not: I ended up with a dozen different tins―the entire line―that smelled exactly, and I mean EXACTLY, the same.

Why a manufacturer would think it a good idea to put unsealed tins of different scented snuffs nestled together in the same box is, frankly, beyond my ability to understand.

Mixed the latter all together and toasted in a convection oven at 225°F (107°C) for 45 minutes, spread out in a thin layer on parchment paper. That seems to have drawn off the mono-scenting, but will let sit out to air for a day or so, and then see. Will likely oil it after that, jar it up, and use as a blending component.

Live and learn, I suppose.

EDIT (update): decided to take it to bone dry; turns out the factory moisture content (at least in the tins from this box) is 18.7%.

I wonder if they ship like that - I bought some individual Janta tins and they were all but indistinguishable from each other; maybe they never differed in the first place?

Interesting observation. Sounds like poor shipping (from India to the warehouse) and/or poor storage conditions (at the warehouse) are perhaps to blame. That said, the single tins of the Indian Rustica Standard I have had in the recent past have all been great. I will take a pass on ordering any of the others, however. This box put me off of them for good.
