Would a regular spice mill from a local culinary store work to grind down tobacco that fine for snuff or is the snuff mill the only way to go? I haven’t gone into the local store yet I guess I was just wondering if I would waste a trip or not
I use a Krups electric bladed coffee grinder. It’s hard to vary the size of the grains with a blade grinder, though. I’ve seen recommendations here at Snuffhouse for a burr grinder, as that lets you control the grain size better than a blade grinder.
Huh I didn’t think a coffee grinder would go that fine but then again I don’t drink coffee that much and haven’t used a coffe grinder in prob almost 6 years I’m sure they’ve come a long way. Thanks I will look into that too
I bought a “snuff mill” as advertised from a snuff supplier online as I wanted to experiment with my own tobaccos. Turns out the snuff mill is actually a herb grinder of sorts, although portable it doesn’t grind tobacco that fine. Yes a small electric burr grinder is probably best.
Thanks for the input I will definitely look into a Burr then or see if they have something similar
research them well not all burrs are equaly awesome. I got one I wish I could remember the brand it sucked. It didn’t work like advertised at all.
Will do. I’ve learned the hard way not just to buy something cuz its on sale or just came out. That bit me in the ass a few times over the years. Now I do some good research online and read reviews.
Do they handle the stemmier parts pretty well too? I assume one chops up the baccy somewhat before feeding it through the grinder, like 1/4 inch chunks or what?
Yes chop it up. Run it through the mill a few times if you want. Also you will note some snuff collecting on the top of the catch bin. This super fine and oily snuff is worth keeping separate as what I would refer to as a cabinet snuff.
beware of anything marketed as a “snuff grinder” or “snuff mill.” These are generally more suitable for cannibis, “herbs” and such, and sold from head shops. I don’t have any personal experience here, just memories of what I’ve read from other members who have tried to find something suitable. The above advice should be well read and past threads consulted before making any high ticket purchaces.
So if wanted to get into grinding tobacco or more coarse snuff down would the snuff mill from mrsnuff sells be the way to go? I don’t plan on doing big quantity if I decide to try this
http://www.espressozone.com/burr-coffee-grinders.aspx This site sells a lot of high-quality burr grinders for personal use. In addition to these, you can also get some pretty good results from turkish hand grinders.
Thanks snuffinclown good stuff there and unlike the maestro I was thinking about trying my hand at grinding a bit more and try my hand at scenting my own. @snuffmaestro I think that one from mrsnuff would work good for small amounts but I can’t say for sure I haven’t purchased it
What about the hand-crank mills for grains and beans etc? I had one that was heavy duty enough, but it seems like it may be a bit prone to clogging. If I could find mine I’d just try it, but prob not worth a re-purchase without being sure. Just curious…
I have not tried it for snuff, but I am somewhat of a coffee fanatic and have several grinders. One is a brass hand-crank burr grinder that I got in a middle eastern store. It is adjustable for everything from perc grind to powder for Turkish coffee. They are not a hot selling item and can be found in some of the stores for just a few dollars - look for one covered with dust and you can probably get a deal. For coffee, they are a grinder of last resort because it takes a l o n g time to grind enough for breakfast coffee.
If buying a burr grinder dedicate it to tobacco only. Don’t let the wife grind nuts for cookies. Or use it for coffee beans. You will spend a long time cleaning it. If you do need to get the smegma out I suggest using rock salt it will absorb most nasty crap while cleaning the unit. Then dispose of the salt in normal fashion drive to the beach and throw it into the ocean.
Thank’s for the tip Citra47! I know just the shop to look for one then!
@distaind @snuffmaestro The spice mill from mr snuff works for very small amounts, like enough to make a pinch or two and see if it’s worth grinding more of that particular tobacco.
