Snuff in Washington DC

So - I’ve got a business trip coming up that’s going to take me to Washington, DC.

I’m going to be travelling snuffless - I don’t fancy trying to explain the tin of brown powder in my bag to a US customs official with the unlikely explanation that it’s ‘snuff’ - so was wondering if anyone knew of any good tobacconists in the capital who stock snuff.

And if you *do* - what do people recommend, for American snuffs? What can I get in the US that I’m unlikely to find in the UK? And what’s *good*?

Read this thread you might find something near DC http://snuffhouse.com/discussion/7365/snuff-in-the-states/p1. I would just pack snuff I use in original tins. You just usually find Scotches most of the plain are fine smoky flavor the sweets vary a few are flavored . Might find some Toque Silver dollar. Snuff is hard to find in the states.

If you panic PM me and I can send you something. But I recommend you bring the snuffs you like. Scotch snuff is not easy to use. A bit harder than a Toast not as tough as Indian Whites.  You’ve been warned!

I’ve traveled extensively, both domestically and internationally with snuff, over the course of the past 7 years.

I am from the US, but I have never ever even had a question from TSA or any other country’s equivalent. (Mexico, UK, Nicaragua, Netherlands for examples that I can think of off the top of my head)

You have absolutely nothing to worry about.  It’s tobacco.  Everyone’s familiar, even if snuff is unusual. If you really are concerned, bringing the original tin won’t hurt, but I travel with just my unlabeled snuffbox (carry-on) all the time, and sometimes an unlabeled jar (checked bag) to re-fill from, depending on length of stay.

That said, I use snus on the plane itself, rather than snuff, because a few airlines ban all tobacco use in the air, and I don’t want to have a conflict (or a nicotine deficiency!).  I can use snus 100% discreetly.  But I can’t wait to get back on the ground and take a pinch.

It’s not easy to find snuff locally in the US, even in VA, though I’ve gotten scotches in Food Lion groceries near Winchester, Virginia.  You should bring some if you want it or can’t live without it.

@puffpuff You aren’t lying about finding snuff for sale. The only place I’ve seen it sold in my town was Walgreens back in the 90’s (giant Levi Garrett bottle) and more recently 30g cardboard tubes of W.E. Garrett scotch at Jewel Osco. None of the tobacco shops stock it. DC might be a different story… might have to call around to more reputable tobacconists - of which there should be plenty seeing how our representatives love to spend other people’s money with reckless abandon.

Every Food Lion supermarket I’ve been to in West Virginia and Western Maryland has had a decent variety of American Scotch snuffs. I see there are a few Food Lion stores in the suburbs of DC (including Rockville MD), although I haven’t been to those, so I can’t say for sure if they have snuffs. If they do have them, they will be at the tobacco counter, which is also the express checkout lane. Either visible in the tobacco display case, or under the counter and must be asked for.

Thanks for all the advice, guys - and for the offer of snuff, @basement_shaman! I should be okay - I’m a pretty irregular snuff user. Was just curious about the local specialties …

@puffpuff - Yes, I’ve hopped around Europe a bit with snuff. But these are strange times …

Following this one with interest. I am off to Washington next week and would like to buy a few local samples while I am there as well. @ParlousState sorry to bust in on your thread like that.
