Watched a movie starring Jonny Depp called The Libertine. Owing to its 17th C. subject matter, I was expecting a couple of snuff using scenes and I detected at least three throughout the movie.
Sorry, I didn’t realize this was already mentioned in another thread. I wish the search function wasn’t set to search subject line by default.
that is cool. There are lots of post that are similar. It’s no problem in my opnion.
I posted a while back a link to the oldest surviving ‘snuff movie’. It also happens to be a copy of the oldest surving piece of recorded motion picture film - it is of course Fred Ott’s sneeze. Fred Ott worked at Thomas Edison’s laboratory and was filmed during a snuff induced sneeze, in which you can clearly see him taking a pinch. So there’s a bit of trivia for you all to baffle your friends with down the pub.
Just watched an old western from 1961 called “Gold of the Seven Saints”. There is a seen where a lady is having trouble delivering a baby so the doctor borrowed a snuff box from another man & filled a quill with snuff then blew it up the ladies nose. This caused the lady to sneeze & the baby came right out. This technique was known as “quilling”. I’m a big fan of the westerns.
There’s an old Laurel and Hardy film where the gag is around Oliver Hardy sneezing etc. I saw it as a kid but can’t remember the name of it.
Just came across this. I love Dalziel & Pascoe - but haven’t read this yet. http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/0586072500/ref=olp\\_product\\_details?ie=UTF8&me=&seller=
Sweeny Todd has a little snuff in it, but if you blink you’ll miss it.
Yes chas actually posted that clip from Sweeny Todd on the other Movie discussion. There are some other good movies in which snuff makes an appearance listed there. Go to comment #23 from chas for sweeny todd link. Movies
snuffster- the laurel and hardy movie you remember was called Bonnie Scotland. They expect to inherit an estate or something but actually just receive a snuffbox and a set of bagpipes. I don’t remember seeing this one, just read a review. the reviews weren’t too good but when you add up Laurel+Hardy+snuff box full of snuff I’m sure it equals good laughs for us here at snuffhouse. One of my favorites was always the one where they have to deliver a piano to a house on a hill with a zillion stairs.
My favorite is when Bugs bunny gets into Napoleon’s snuff box and gets a huge red nose.
Now that I’ve got to see! Bugs Bunny rules! I love the one with the vampire that changes from bat to vampire to bat by saying hocus pocus or abracadabra. The vampire comes up behind him with an anvil and bugs says hocus pocus…squish! Then bugs starts with the abracapocus and hocuscadabra causing him to be odd mixes of bat/vampire. Bugs Bunny would definately cause someone to check in to a mental hospital by the time he’s done with them. I’m sure he does the same to Napoleon.
They don;t show it on T.V any more because it is “Politically Incorrect”. But, If you can download it or maybe you tube it, it is worth it. One of the best episodes in my oppinion!!! P.S Kill da wabbit, kill da wabbit, kill da wabbit…
www.youtube.com/watch?v=KxWzNTNsPlI Not sure if this works, I’m on dial up.
Yes, that worked. Excellent!
I bet you’ll think twice before sliding down a banister again eh?
bugs bunny rocks! lol he needs to work on his snuff technique though.
not sure if this ones been mentioned or not but the song “rooster” by alice in chains contain these lyrics “Here They Come To Snuff The Rooster Yeah Here Come The Rooster You Know He Ain’t Gonna Die” not sure if this is a snuff reference or something else but i had some friends over sampling some of my snuff and they pointed this out to me. let me know if anybody knows.
no it has nothing to do with snuff. It has to do with Jerry Cantrells dad being a nam vet nicknamed the rooster.
oh, well i’m just gonna pretend it has to do with snuff. lol
me too.
Onefortheroad - Well I never! Saw that film as a little kid and remembered it ever since. I love the piano/stairs one, and the flight of stairs is intact to this day in that really hilly place in California. Comic geniuses several generations ahead of their time, I love the fact that their scripts are absurd and witty. A line I never forget and that always makes me laugh is when Oliver Hardy inadvertantly holds a can of milk to his ear instead of the old fashioned phone receiver. Noticing his mistake, he picks up the actual receiver and delivers the immortal line “Excuse me, my ear is full of milk”. Ridiculous and with perfect delivery. Great stuff.
I just finished watching :The good, the bad and the ugly …The ugly guy finds a mother of pearl purse smells it opens it then takes a pinch. The purse is featured in a later scene in the prisoner of war camp where the bad guy is looking for Bill Carson whose name is sewn on the inside of the purse. There is a scene where the bad guy offers the ugly guy a pinch then smashes his hand in the purse. I never noticed it all before. Cheers Clint!
I sell the dead is a newer indie zombie movie and one of the protaganists does some snuff early on in the movie.
Be sure to check out the thread movies? for other movies with snuff. With some comments about The Good, The Bad and The Ugly too. Great movie.
Every movie I see now has snuff in it. Of course, its my own snuff.
Inglourious Basterds…Lt Aldo Raine (Brad Pitt) snuffs it up at least 3 times.
I just started watching Yellowbeard on hulu, and A british aristocrat takes a pinch from his snuffbox while riding a carriage. It got me excited for a moment and made me take some snuff…
Watched the new A Christmas Carol, nice snuff scene. Also, I watched Mr. Magoo’s Christmas Carol… there is a snuff scene in there as well! Good ole Jim Backus.
“The Secret Life of Bees.” If I recall correctly there was a scene that shows a woman dipping nasal snuff and spitting it into a snuff can. I know it’s not the same as seeing a person sniffing snuff in a film but wanted to mention it. Besides, it is a pretty good movie, kinda chick-flikish but I think it would keep most men’s attention.
War and Peace by Sergei Bondartshuk has a lot of snuffing.
I recently watched the Shaw Brothers kung fu classic called King Boxer, it was great, and the villian in it was doing snuff a few times throughout.
I watch Akibata00 on You tube. She’s a pretty cool chick.
Sherlock Holmes in ‘House of Fear’. Starring Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce. One of the main characters, Mr Alastair, pinches throughout the movie.
Battle of Waterloo. One of the chaps in command of the British forces snuffs throughout and also has a beautiful snuff box. His father gave it to him and he gives to some chap to give to his son before he is cut down by Frnech Lancers. Cracking film, recommend watch.
Last night I saw a rather odd movie called “Bagdad Cafe” from 1987. In an early scene in the film a Bavarian man looking for his wife (who is one of the main characeters) stops in the cafe looking for her. He taps out a pile of snuff, or maybe schmalzler on his hand and snuffs it to the bafflement of the two guys working there. He then pours some on the hand of the guy behind the counter who acts as if an alien pooped on him. The whole scene is rather entertaining.
The modern version (2006) of “Marie Antoinette” has a brief scene of a young aristocratic lady taking snuff at a party. Its very brief, but she takes snuff from someone’s box and puts it on the back of her hand. She snuffs off the hand then giggles/shrieks and sniffs the remnants off her fingertips. It all happens very fast and if you happen to be taking a pinch of snuff yourself, or even sipping a drink you will miss it. You can’t even see any snuff from the camera angle, so the actors were probably snuffing air. Its 18th century France though, so you’d expect to see some snuff scenes at least. Another one for our list anyway.
In the Adventures of Sherlock Holmes series starring Jeremy Brett (best Sherlock Holmes EVER!) in the Golden Pince-Nez mystery Holmes’ brother Mycroft does snuff and uses it to solve the mystery (in the book Holmes uses cigarette ashes)
I am a HUGE western fan, and I have been watching all the Gene Autry movies lately. I can’t remeber the exact title of the movie, but there was an old cowpoke who was one of the co stars who used snuff. Everytime he took a pinch Gene and/or Frog (Smiley Burnette) would sneeze just watching him!! The movie was made in the late 1930s or early 1940s. He has so many movies it is hard to recall the exact one. It is actually what made me start thinking about using snuff instead of smoking.
I haven’t seen many of Autry’s movies.I do enjoy his music though. Always liked his" Cowboy Commandments" he made up in the 1950’s for the young kids who want to be like him: 1.never shoot first, hit a smaller man, or take unfair advantage. 2.never go back on his word, or a trust confided in him. 3.always tell the truth. 4.be gentle with children, the elderly and animals. 5.not advocate or possess racially or religiously intolerant ideas. 6.help people in distress. 7.be a good worker. 8.keep himself clean in thought, speech, action and personal habits. 9.respect women, parents and his nation’s laws. 10.be a patriot.
I’d say those are 10 things to live by.
We don’t have positive role models for kids these days. These days it’s Lil Wayne.
Don’t forget about me Tom.
Yes!! I wish children’s shows still taught great things like that! Autry’s Cowboy Commandments are great in explaining a big part of American culture. I watch the shows my kid watches, and they teach them how to speak mexican and chinese… It’s a shame.
I’am gonna disagree on childrens cartoons being better or worse. Man there where some dumb ass children shoes back in the day. I’ve seen a few that make barney look like einstein. I’ve seen ones that make the teletubies look normal and sensible. I’ve seen ones that have actors that I’am sure didn’t tell their parole officer what they’re doing for a job. I’ve seen that through out all generations of t.v. I’am sure there are some great kids shows now that actualy teach things including general moral guidlines.
I’ve heard of a fellow by the name of Tommy “Snuff” Garrett who was somewhat of a promotional man in the music industies in the 60-70’s. He worked with Cher and Jim Nabors and probably others. Pretty nice name for those thinking of having a baby, eh?
Those Autry’s cowboy commandements reminded me of Umberto Eco’s essay How to play Indians. Here’s a few points:
- Never attack immediately: make yourself visible at a distance a few days ahead of time, producing easily observed smoke signals, thus giving the stagecoach or the fort ample time to send word to the Seventh Cavalry
- If possible, appear prominently in small groups on the surrounding hills. Set up sentinels on totally isolated peaks.
- In any attack on a stagecoach, always follow the vehicle at a short distance or, better still, ride alongside it, to facilitate your being shot.
More here.
“I recently watched the Shaw Brothers kung fu classic called King Boxer, it was great, and the villian in it was doing snuff a few times throughout.” Tom - I remember the snuff taking baddy after forty years or so. I seem to recall that he only sniffed snuff through one nostril and committed suicide at the end with two daggers (cue erupting fountains of blood). King Boxer was probably the first Chinese martial arts films to feature in the West and I saw it soon after it was first released. We were all in stitches at the spineless direction, wooden acting, rubber knives, rotten plot and, above all, atrocious dubbing. The person who directed it was an oriental version of Edward D Wood Junior. It is, as you rightly say, a great film though not necessarily for the reasons Shaw Bros. intended.
Not only have I watched alot of westerns, but I have read alot of them too. Mostly William W. Johnstone westerns. They are excellent by the way. Anyways, he gives alot more credit to injun tactics than most of the movies. Some movies do a good job of portraying them. Typically certain older ones. In real life they would never be seen or heard coming. They actually taught Americans alot of tactics that were very useful in winning our independence, and other wars.
“They actually taught Americans alot of tactics that were very useful in winning our independence …” Not to mention more than a little help from abolitionist France.
Yes, there was a lot of factors that helped us. The guerilla tactics we used, before France begun helping us, as a rag tag army defeat the greatest super power in the world at the time was influenced alot by the frontiersman fighting indians and so on. France did help a great deal. I love history, especially American, and I could go on forever about this topic…lol.
I believe in a centenial episode of SNL (1976) Jim Belushi and crew we’re wearing powdered wigs and taking tons of snuff. Rumor has it, that it wasn’t really snuff though. I’ve searched for the clip, but can’t find it. I’ll search some more.
@mcguyver75 It was actually John Belushi in a sketch about Beethoven. The Snuffing in it was meant to be sort of a sly reference to other things that go up noses, but Snuff did get several mentions if I remember correctly.
Thank-You. I skipped over the Beethoven clip several time’s. Also, thanks for correcting me on the Jim vs. John, I always mix it up. From rumors I’ve heard, it was actually another substance, but who really know’s?
John in the 70’s, it could have been, and it would not suprise me.
The film “I Sell The Dead” starring the great Angus Scrimm has snuff in it.
yes it does. And it features a song by the pogues too.
Not a movie, per se, but I recently have been watching the series “Long Way Round” about Ewan McGregor and Charley Boorman’s motorcycle trek across Europe, Asia and North America. In Mongolia they are offered snuff (they were advised that they might be) and they and the cameraman all partake. Charley says its “good snuff” and that he “used to take a lot of snuff.” They were served the snuff from a red Chinese style snuff bottle with a spoon in the top. All snuffed off their hands.
I recently saw snuff in 2 movies I recently watched. The Flesh and the Fiends, with Peter Cushing and Donald Pleasance. And, if I remember rightly, The Hellfire Club, also has Peter Cushing in it.
I do enjoy a good snuff movie
I hope your not talking about real snuff films you wascally wabbit
Not a movie but there’s the old Honeymooners episode, “The Man from Space”, where Ed Norton dresses up as Pierre François de la Brioskee, complete with a snuffbox. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ohhkBUkB9xw Snuffing begins at 5:26.
I saw the new Jim Carrey/Disney version of “A Christmas Carol” last night, and in the scene where Scrooge sees the businessmen talking about going to his funeral to get a free lunch one of them takes a pinch of snuff. Terrible version, by the way.
Hey thanks for pointing that out! I have seen so many it is hard to remember which one is which.
Lol, ill have to remember to use snuff as a weapon like that.
@Mike B.: It is just about identical to every other version of the story out there. I thought it was rather decent.
@cstokes4: I thought the extended chase scenes with the funeral carriage were absurd–“oh no the kids must be getting bored, let’s add a chase scene!”. And, though I’m well aware it’s a cartoon, there were some pretty bad plot holes that don’t exist in other adaptations, such as: -Scrooge buys the prize turkey and sends it…where? It gets loaded into a cab, and normally it would go to Cratchet’s house but Cratchet arrives at work the next morning without any apparent knowledge that a giant turkey was sent to his house by his employer -Scrooge spends christmas evening with his nephew instead of the Cratchets–maybe that’s how it is in the book, but the other movies don’t have that and it just seems wrong -Scrooge sees the “guess who I am” game at his nephew’s place, which takes place after dinner when he sees it through the ghost of christmas present; yet when he interrupts that same game in real life, he then sits down to eat dinner with them But mostly I hated the pointless extended chase scenes.
In The Highlander there are at least two scenes of snuff taking, one in which Sean Connery’s character takes a pinch in a boat, and the other is during a deuling scene,
On Turner Classic Movies today, at maybe 6pm, there was this black and white British movie, that had this older policewoman, who was working on a case, and I came in when she was coming out of someones window, where these other police asked her what she was doing, and said that someone stole his snuff, but not his snuffbox, which she displayed, later on, she is using some chemestry set, and finds the snuff was mixe with stricnine, and I guess killedthe person, as then she pulls a crime drama book off her shelf, and reads part of it to her partner about someone being killed by their snuff being poisoned. I don’t what it was called, someone can look it up if they want.
All the more reason to keep your snuff under lock and key. The ones closest to you are the most likely suspects. Thanks tom. Now I have to sleep with BOTH eyes open.
One True Sentence: A Mystery- the book where someone is murdered by stricnine laced snuff
