Today while reviewing some of the snuff reviews on this forum, I was curious as to how the grind of a snuff is determined. I did a google search on “How to determine the grind level of snuff tobacco” & it appears that there is no “set” rules to it. So, I checked out the reviews on F&T Macouba, and F&T Santo Domingo grinds, both came back as “Medium”. So I put both side by side in comparison (picture attached), and Macouba definitely appears to be a medium grind (compared to F&T HDT which I would consider “fine” grind), and Santo Domingo appears to be a coarse grind in my opinion. I am a newbie to snuff, however, I don’t want to review a product and be wrong, or mislead people. Is there a “guideline” or “set of standards” in which snuff is graded?
Santo Domingo looks coarser than it really is because it’s so moist it clumps a lot; it’s definitely coarser than macouba but not as coarse as a South African snuff or a Rappee or Schmalzer. But it’s definitely a spectrum; Wilsons toasts are towards the moister end of the dry spectrum for example, SG’s IHT is the driest toast I’ve had.
Thanks for the replies gents, and for clarifying things for me! I want to make sure that my reviews are accurate, when it comes to the “Grind” question. I am not concerned when it comes to the nicotine question, as that is a very subject question.
willie pete is ultra fine I would say there is super fine, fine, medium fine, medium, medium course, course, extra course. and if you want to invent another grind there are no rules.Like fluffy or dence or other adjective description
@basement_shaman I received my order from MrSnuff today, and in it is the 41 White Elephant. Would I be correct in classifying that as super fine grind?
@Paulie I find WE to be fine compared to Dholakia White, I guess it depends on your concept of super fine. I could be wrong and reserve that right. When I wrote the review it was based on the WE I had received 2010, Of course that batch was stronger than the current batch. This version is easier than D white where as the older batch was stronger. I still have a few grams and had sampled side by side. Batches will always vary no matter who makes them. So if you want to say super fine that is your opinion, at lease you are doing your part to educate someone into making a choice.
@basement_shaman I tried the WE 41 (using the technique that Paul Shallbetter demonstrates in his youtube video) & it packed some big punch (nicotine) for me! I can’t imagine what earlier version would have been like…wow! Thanks @horus92 @lunecat & @basement_shaman for educating me!
Yeah I think this White Elephant is a little chalkier-smelling than the last batch too. It’s also more khaki and less yellow. I like it but it’s different. I love how every year or two snuffs will change.
I often rotate in a course grind if I was blocking up on a previous day, I guess this might be true for others. I have also noted grind changes, not sure if just if it’s true or just what I remember…Example my first S.Gwaith KB seemed so course however less so now I look at a newer tin…
