Snuff Grinding

Anyone here done much grinding with mortar and pestle? I am low on cash and don’t have access to grinders for the moment so I was contemplating using a mortar and pestle. Just wanted to know if the effort and end result are worth it, and about how much time would it take to grind a days worth of snuff.

If you have a coffee grinder that works well, IMO but with so little effort I make more than a day’s worth of snuff.

I find the mortar and pestle slow but necessary, I use a blade grinder first, then hand pulverize.

I just tried it , it’s a bit slow but that’s ok if you’re just messing around once or twice.

Alright. I can’t get a grinder for now so I’m going to have to mess around with a pestle. I wonder if I could fashion some sort of a rough millstone and use it for snuff…

I use a mortar and pestle all the time. In fact I have some Kendal rope drying in one mortarium right now. Nothing a quick spin can’t handle. I will say that I do prefer snuff that has rested a bit though. Coffee grinders do take a lot of the work out but I always finish up with a pistillum.

Can you dry your favorite pipe tobacco and grind it? would it make good snuff?

You can, and it might, all blended tobaccos are a potential snuff.

@ Nachman, I’ve made some very nice snuff using pipe tobacco. Especially flavored tobacco comes out very nice.

where can one get a rasp?

Try a nutmeg grater or a clean file with a dry twist.

awesome thank you/

I’m going to try GL Pease westminister, a mix of virginias, turkish and latakia. It has quite a punch in a pipe, quite spicey. If the snuff tastes as good, it should be quite nice.

If it’s that good I should have added it to my 4Noggins order the other day… though I tend to prefer Va flakes, with or without additions. At least I have a load of Union Square heading my way (among other things).
