I am trying to find something that makes better snuff than a coffee grinder. Does anyone have any experience with the type of “herb” grinders such as the ones found here? – http://www.bolinat.com/snuff-grinder I realize that these “snuff” grinders are hardly ever used for actually grinding snuff, but that is exactly the use I am interested in. It’s a good idea in theory – multiple screened levels in which to sieve, but none of the descriptions state just how finely these devices will grind. If they really do work well with tobacco, then this is something I’d be willing to invest in. They are pricey, though, so I’m wary of buying one only to find out it makes a lousy snuff grinder. Any other suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.
I’m not speaking from experience, but I think I remember some members stating that they were not very good for the powder like consistency needed for snuff. I think Pieter may have bought one.
I bought a GRASSLEAF COCO 35 off of eBay recently and it works well. Yesterday I ground up some of Roderick’s Rustica in an electric coffee grinder, and then ran it through the Grassleaf grinder. The snuff came out like powder! Very fine, just how I like it. The grinder is a little small, and it takes time just to grind a 5 gram smash box worth, but I think it was worth the money spent. One more thing, I did notice some very small flecks of aluminum in the final product. I don’t think it’s enough to worry about though. I put some pretty gnarly stuff up my nose in my lifetime, so I don’t think microscopic specs of aluminum will hurt me any.
@kjoerup: I bought the snuff grinder as advertised by Snuff Store. If you are prepared to pay postage, you can have it for free! Totally useless. I use a coffee grinder and panty hose. Once the tobacco is ground to a stage where the grinder can’t make it any finer, I pour the snuff into a glass jar. I then cover the jar’s opening with panty hose and sieve. The remains I then take to the mortar and pestle and back to the jar and panty hose. The grinder which you are talking about is very small and it’s gonna take ages to grind a fair amount of snuff. It’s more of a toy than anything else.
It’s a great grinder for other dried plant material…although a coffee grinder works better for that stuff too. Go figure.
@Pieter Claassen: Thank you for valuable opinion. I won’t bother with this thing now. I guess the coffee grinder and manual sieve is the easiest and most affordable way. I was looking into table top grain grinders, but they certainly are not cheap.
I bought one very similar to that some time ago. I agree that it is worthless. A coffee grinder and pantyhose, or if you have a lot of time on your hands and even more patience, a mortar and pestle and pantyhose will work much better.
Anyone know of a place to get the screens that come with those grinder cheap? Or, does anyone know the screen mesh numbers?
