Snuff for the picky nose. Please Advise.

Hello all! Been awhile since I’ve been here since I’m not only new to snuff, but I’ve discovered that just one 25g tin lasts me a loooong time… so I’ve had little input to give. It’s about time for me to make my second order of snuff, (I order from MrSnuff) and I’d like some suggestions on what to get. I have a very picky nose that gets easily clogged if I take anything too harsh. I like things like Fichtennadel from Bernard but the menthol really stops up my nose. I also can’t take things like the american scotch varieties. Normally I find Sun Kohinoor (this stuff is really easy for me to take, though you wouldn’t think it from seeing the stuff) or Sternecker Fresco are my go-to snuffs. I also love bernard’s non-menthol’s especially the Schmalzlerfranzl. Problem is, many many snuffs either burn too much or cause a stuffy nose, even the Sternecker burns a lot to me (not too much though - it’s really a wonderful product) I’ve tried the Dolakia Ganga and it felt more like torture than anything else… can’t keep it out of my sinuses and man did it make my forehead hurt. Right now, in addition to my two main snuff’s I have Bernard’s Alt Offenbacher Kostlich, McChrystals Clove (I can’t take much of this… mainly it’s my wake-up snuff), and the very rare pinch of Zweifacher also from Bernard. I really love the smell and nose-feel (is that a proper term or did I make it up?) of the Schmalzlers in spite of the mess they sometimes make if I take a larger bump. Anyway, in light of my nasal sensitivity and personal preferences, is there anything any of you would like to recommend? It may be worthy of note that I am an ex-smoker and I also use copious amounts of swedish loose snus… snuff is what I use to “top up” on my vitamin N.

Bernards Gekachelter Virginie is good

If you like the Bernards, try Brasil Doppelt Fermentiert…lovely coarse but forgiving schmalzler. Decent nic content, not too much nose burn, lovely aroma. A brilliant snuff in the medium-coarse, rich and easy-to-take category, which also features a hearty nicotine content is Abraxas. It’s a small-batch snuff, handmade by our very own Snuffster, which is available through Mr Snuff. It’s terrific stuff, rarely a day goes by when I don’t partake of a pinch or six of Abraxas.

My advice for a particular nose would be… 1) Do not take overtly dry snuff. 2) Do not snuff old snuff. 3) Dump out snuff that gets to dry and move on. 4) Steer clear of mentholated snuff. 5) Learn to take each snuff uniquely. 6) Learn how hard to snuff the various grinds of snuff.

What can I say??? It all depends on the nose involved! Different noses have different tolerances. While some might say “stay away from mentholated” another nose might get stuffed when using anything except for a medicated snuff. All posters can do is give you their own personal preferences, that does not necessarily mean that they will be right for you. EDIT: One of the first that I tried was: Wilson’s Crumbs of Comfort

What @howdydave said. :^) You might want to try some of the more ‘newbie friendly’ snuffs that have a coarser grind and higher moisture. The Dholakia americanized blends like Wow, Temptation, Blast, and Q-snuff are very easy to take. Sure, you won’t be able to impress people with their long and distinguished lineages, but you may find something you really like. And in the long run, the search for YOUR perfect snuff is part of the fun.

My EXACT RECOMMENDATION FOR YOU: Toque Quit. The best for you IMO. My reason: It doesn’t clog. It’s got a good tobacco scent with just a hint of SP scent added (bergamot) and it’s medium grind, medium moisture. Easilly an all day snuff. BUT it has GREAT nicotine. I think you’ll like it honestly… it fits your requirements quite well…

@transistor  I’m not sure how much SP is added to Quit.  I’ve got a bulk bag of Quit and while there’s no shortage of ammonia, I didn’t get any Bergamot/lavender from my Quit.  I don’t see any mention of scent on Toque’s site, but no one mentioned SP anywhere on the snuffreviews.com under Quit, except for  a request that Roderick make Original with the Quit base tobacco. That was probably posted before SP Extra was available – that’s Roderick’s SP scent on the Quit base, as far as I know.

I suspect you’ve had a bit of cross-tin contamination if you detect SP scents in Quit.  I know that I had a tin of Toque Original that I had stored on top of a tin of Absynthe and I wound up with a tin of weak Absynthe and a tin of SP/Absynthe.

I’ve come to the conclusion that tins make for ‘hit or miss’ type long term storage.

@szalvias

I found that my nose was very ‘fragile’ when using oil based snuffs, like Poschl.  I was prone to acne when using oil based snuff, and would get stuffed up after just a few pinches of the same.

I recommend trying everything, as I have found that now I can pinch through a 10g tin in just a few days, with almost any English snuff.  I sometimes use a 25g tin of SG Kendal Brown in 2 weeks.  It may not be that you’re sensitive to snuff, but only that you’re sensitive to certain types.  I always suspect the oil-based snuffs, but that’s only because that’s what affected me.

I recommend Wilson’s Best Dark if want to try a heavier snuff that is easy to pinch, but contains no oil.  If you get it, I also recommend decanting it to an airtight, non-metal tin until you finish it.  It’s a salty snuff and will corrode the tin as the salt evaporates out of solution and affects the metal.

Good luck!

@puffpuff
but you assume I’m not using brand new mason jars, and I NEVER put snuffs in other snuff containers.
No cross contamination on my part.  What ever it is, it came straight from the can and into the correct mason jar.  Trust me I know.

And You’re right- Quit doesn’t have SP in it- it’s just the tangy tobacco I’m “reading” as an SP.  It smells “spISH to me.  But that’s just me.”  I know it isn’t. thanks though puffpuff

Personally I am finding my nose likes toast better than anything else. I can take other snuffs without clogging but there are some that do clog me. Menthols don’t work for me. I like them but they don’t like me.
