Hi all. Its been a while since I have been on he forum. Various things take up more of my time these days but I always check now and again to see how things are going and the discussion always seems lively. I have also settled into using less variety of snuffs than when I first started - pretty much stick to O&G these days with a little Toque and F&T Bordeaux thrown in when I am in the mood. Anyway, I am taking my first flight on Thursday since I started snuffing. I am off to Norway for a few days with my girlfriend to meet some of her family. I wanted to know what experiences people have had taking snuff on a plane/ through customs etc. Will I have a problem taking some in my hand luggage? Thanks, David.
I fly about 8 times a year and never had any trouble with snuff. Keep it in its original packaging so they can see the label to prove it is tobacco and you should be fine. Stefan
I fly a fair bit and have never had any problems. I keep the snuff on my person in a wooden or plastic box. That way it doesn’t set off the metal detectors.
So best to keep in its original container, which is metal, or put in a wooden snuff box?
If its in the metal container, just take out & put in bowl with your keys, coins etc. before going through medal detector. I never had a problem at the airports. Never even had the containers checked out. You have a giant population in the US who use moist snuff (lip tobacco) which come in similar size & shape containers & the airports see these cans everyday & know what they are. And I’m sure the airports in the UK & rest of world see similar things everyday from snuff to snus…
Welcome back Mopey, good to see you again.
I guess airport security has seen a lot stranger things than snuff! I will put a tin in the suitcase as well… just in case. Hoping to check out what cigars prices at the airport too, and pick up a couple of nice ones.
I flew internationally in and out of America a few times with 50g pipe tobacco tins in my luggage (and they even printed pretty badly on the outside of the suitcases!) and never had a problem. I put them in an outside pocket so if they got nervous they wouldn’t tear up my bags but nothing happened at all. You usually pay high prices on cigars unless you buy at duty free in which case you get them on your return. Even then check the prices as they’re often no bargain.
I wish I was snuffing when I had to fly… would have made the trip a lot more bearable. You should be just fine though. Like everyone else said, just keep it on you, and throw it into the bowl when you go through the metal detectors.
I got searched recently at an airport and the official found my Toque tin - no problem after a quick explanation and telling her how to get it as she was trying to quit cigs. Welcome back Mopey
Got back last night from Norway. Went to a little Island called Smola. Had no trouble at the airport as you all suggested. Could not believe the price of things in Norway. Two beers cost 150 NOK, thats 15 GBP!! Thats about 28 dollars!!! How they afford to live there is beyond me! Picked up some cheap cigars on the way back from duty free, about 25 GBP for 16. Not the best, I like a fuller flavour cigar, but given the price of cigars in the UK, its a bargain. Kicked back last night with some Jim Beam, a robusto cigar, and of course my snuff. Cigars and snuff go really really well together! Thanks Troutsroker and Snuffster for the welcomes.
Heck, I was taking snuff while in the security check point line and took a pinch right before dropping it in the bowl for Xray. What are they going to do? It’s NOT ILLEGAL!!!
Well, no, it’s not illegal. The point is, if they think it might be illegal, and pull you out of line until their supervisor comes back from lunch to tell them it’s not illegal, you just might miss your flight. The fact that you were right all along doesn’t change the fact that you missed your flight, and what they did wasn’t illegal either, so there’s not really anything you can do about it. Cheers, Java
There was a story about a woman in a Kelowna (BC, Canada) airport who wasn’t allowed on her flight because she was wearing a 1.75 inch silver pistol necklace. The security people said it was not because of what it was, but because of “what it represents”. Link: http://www.reason.com/brickbat/show/127019.html Airports are lame.
Java is right Bryan, its not about it being illegal, its about over zealous airport security giving you a hard time unnecessarily.
Well, I guess I should be more careful. I was snuffing out of my bullet like it was the thing to do! I’ve flown several times with snuff and never even had a hint of a problem. In fact, they’ve never even asked me what it was. Seriously, airport security is a joke anyways. I’ve seen people get on my plane that didn’t even have a boarding pass, and I’ve heard many people bring things on planes that they weren’t supposed to. I’d say, if you’re worried about it, just pack the snuff deep in your carry on, or just keep it in your pocket in a wooden snuff box.
It is something that irritates me. On the one hand, boldly snuffing in front of people is the only way snuff is going to gain momentum and acceptance here. Also, if you’re too discreet about it, and someone sees you, it does look like you’re doing something illegal. On the other hand, if I’m on vacation, and one of the Secutity Zombies makes me miss my flight, my wife and daughters would make my life a living hell for years, so… I compromise. Wait until the wheels and flaps are up, and we’re at altitude, and then snuff bigger than life in front of everybody. Cheers, Java
I’ve been asked by airport security staffs what it was I kept in my snuff box? But when told “DIP” (even though it wasn’t) they allowed my snuff box through to the gate :o) Flying back and forth between the US and Denmark (while I lived in PA) was a nightmare. But not because of my snuff, but rather because of incredibly annoying security measures. Off with your terror shoes! Up with your terror lap top and your terror phone. And of course an occasional security staff burp about your exploding terror snuff. They have so far never caught anybody planning a terror attack in a plane, but they have certainly managed to harass ordinary flyers. A couple of years ago in Heathrow (worst Airport I’ve been to) about 500 people were queuing while trying to stuff one bag into another, since before security check you were allowed only ONE bag - of course after check - you could have two again!! Absolutely ridiculous and Osama & friends must be laughing their behinds off (if they ever laugh?) Well, sorry, just needed to rant a bit
