I really enjoy my Toques, and i have another question. Whenever i take snuff, it seems to fly straight into my throat & sinuses. I have tried the wet finger method, but i can’t always do it, so i’m asking: Am i doing something wrong or what?
Its just a question of too much pressure, try taking the pinch and inserting it just slightly into the nostril and then inhaling sharply but gently. If you insert the tips of your finger and thumb just past the flare of your nostrils and concentrate on a shallow but definite inhalation you should find that the snuff no longer hits the throat.
Sometimes I can be very sensitive to fine snuffs too. Particularly toasts. I find that if you just dust your index finger and thumb (i.e. just stick them in the tin and work them about a bit) and then jab 'em up each nostril and sniff, you don’t really get any in the throat. It’s not quite as satisfying as a hefty pinch, but you can repeat any number of times in a row. It gets you there eventually. The upside is you’re given a bit more of the taste that begins and ends with the sniff (if that makes any sense), and it also gets the mucous going so that you can usually take a proper pinch in a couple of minutes with a great deal less sensitivity.
Can’t figure out why it double-posted. Sorry moderators. Edit: Ach! It didn’t. Never mind. Still figuring things out.
Don’t worry, it happens all the time when you click the ‘post comment’ button - it doesn’t show up as a double. Just ignore it.
Yep just refresh the page and it should go.
Not to beat a dead horse, you’ve gotten great advice here. But it seems to me you’re sniffing too hard. The way I explain it to people I *try to* introduce to snuff, is to inhale like you’re smelling a flower. That seems to put it right where I want it. Just my take on it; I know the unhappiness that comes with snuff in the throat. Cough!
@ddavelarsen Yeah ive been told to sniff lightly but i am sniffing really lightly and it does it still.
Oddly enough @Nuusku_, this happened to me this morning too! Got a good load of McC Clove to the back of my throat and had to cough it up!
I like it when my eyeballs get dusted!
I cough a little almost every time. Its just something Ive gotten used to.
If it is still hitting the back of your throat you have to sniff even more lightly - the only way snuff can get beyond your nose is if you sniff too hard. Technique can take a while to develop and perseverence is the only way forward. It will get better at some point, it just takes some people longer than others to get it right; afterall, it is a pretty weird thing to start doing and its natural for it to be a bit tricky at first.
For the really fine varieties I learned to scrunch my nose up to restrict even more air, and then just the lightest, smallest air I can move will still lift a monster pinch. It’s nuts how little force some take to get in the nose.
Another option is to hold your pinch farther away from your nostril when you inhale. The force is a function of the square of the distance, so it shouldn’t take very much distance to make a significant difference – provided the air flow remains consistant. ref: Mr. Physics Mr. Wizard and Bill Nye the Science Guy (all TV personalities here in the USA at one time or another)
@howdydave Haha, thank you for the tip.
