Snuff flavor complexity

I’ve been spending a good amount of time reading consumer posted reviews of pipe tobacco. I’m getting the general impression that among smokers of American-style aromatic (flavored) blends they prefer complex blends with a variety of complimentary flavors/aromas over blends that are overwhelmingly mono-tasting. An example being a vanilla blend that was mentioned as “only being good for blending” because there just wasn’t enough to it to make it worth smoking on its own. Would this concept also apply to flavored snuff? Do you find that you enjoy a more well rounded “chorus” over a more basic flavor with only a few notes?

I like both complex and straightforward snuffs (and pipe baccy). I cant say which I prefer, I pick what I fancy at the time!

When it comes to flavored snuffs, I’d have to say no, I don’t prefer one style over the other. It really depends on the individual snuff as well as the mood I’m in.

I really want to hear from the tobacco itself. So, a tobacco solo, or perhaps a duet, a chorus is OK so long as it doesn’t drown out the soloist.

I prefer straight, pure flavours over “aromatic” snuffs/pipe tobacco. That said, I do like aromatics as well but they are in the back row.

I prefer the complexity to come from the tobacco, not a multitude of flavourings. In the old Fribourg and Treyer book the snuff blender in the 30’s said that all the great snuffs of the past were achieved by the blending of the tobacco not flavours, with scented snuff being a very small amount of the output. My favourite snuffs are things like SP and toasts, with a small amount of something aromatic added like rose.

For most snuffs, such as toasts and Schmalzlers, I prefer plain, straight tobacco snuffs. For menthols I like a variety of menthol like flavours, menthol, Camphor, Eucalyptus.

It just depends. I like tobacco a ton, so normally I like toasts and pure tobacco scents. I like SPs a ton too because they have added flavors that pair well with the tobacco. Those are my go-to snuffs that I use all day. I also dig Scotches, but I feel like those aren’t necessarily complex either.

I like flavoring ingredients in snuff more than I do in pipe tobacco. With a pipe, I usually just want to taste a combination of well-blended tobaccos and little else. However, I do smoke aromatics from time to time, just not the goopy ones. I prefer flavors subtly applied, as in Peterson’s University Flake. For me, snuff is as much about scent/flavor as it is about nicotine, and that can come from the tobacco itself, or from added flavorings. I enjoy a nice complex floral, but I like plain snuffs too, and just about anything else in between. In fact, of all the snuffs I’ve tried, there have only been one or two that I really didn’t like. I love menthols/medicateds, but that’s probably because I smoked menthol cigarettes for decades.

As usual it seems I’m the odd man out. I prefer lightly flavored tobacco normally - vanilla, honey, a touch of rose. I even enjoy my toasts with a little added flavor: Whisky & Honey, and Toast and Marmalade. That said, these flavors should not overrule the basic goodness of the tobacco, which should come out first and foremost. SG Vanilla is a perfect example; it’s primary flavor is a deep smokey tobacco that is the first sensation, followed by a mellow vanilla flavor that acts as a nice touch along side the tobacco.

I like all sorts of snuffs. It just depends on my mood. Sometimes I like toasts, sometimes I like menthol, sometimes I like florals. But my favorite flavour is camphor. That’s what all my favourite snuffs contain. Stefan

I’m finding that my taste evolves and cycles, as with my taste in, say, music. After a half-year of snuffing (has it been that long?) I’m finding that I have some straights that are “regulars” with me, as well as some flavoreds. WoS Best Dark, along SPs and American scotch are regulars; but so is 6 Photo Anarkali and Toque Lavender. I haven’t had much luck with my own mixes, and I’m usually less than ecstatic with the pre-mixes that I’ve tried. Along with what @xapken wrote about pipe vanilla, I’ve been using a Toque Vanilla primarily as a mixer (with mixed results, so to speak). So, I guess I’m all over the map on this.

rather than doing anything complicated with home blends, try just adding a twist of another snuff to the one you are using as your all day snuff. I use plain snuffs all day long but usually just put a snuffspoon of something else into my snuff box loaded with my daily. At the moment Im using Quit all day long with a touch of rose or sp

I always have 3 snuffs in my pockets. No less. I ALWAYS carry a Tripletech with Tom Buck loaded in it. I load it every morning with fresh TB! I carry a Heartwood box with Toque W&H Toast or F&T HDT loaded into it. (A large amount, since its hard to dry out a toast) And I always have a smashbox or even two of another random snuff. Here lately its been alternating between Grand Cairo and WoS Gold Label. I still wish there was a Tripletech that coud hold 2 or even 3 snuffs! I love my snuff.

Thanks for the tip, @snuffster . I’ll try that. In fact, my failures must be due to doing the reverse of what you suggest. FWIW, I’m also miserable at mixing paint. I see some awesome Van Gogh blue in my mind, and wind up with mud.

@transistor - I’m sure Pat Collins made some double boxes at one point?

@snuffster I’m pretty sure there is a double box by PC- but what I’m wondering about is a tripletech double box. With the spoon and dispenser…

Gotcha
