I tried researching this and came up with very little. I’m hoping others here can help. Please avoid political issues out of respect to our hosts who run a clean, friendly environment for discussion. Speculation and generalities are fine, I don’t think there is much available in factual study. UK, Western Europe, Canada, USA, Mexico, Australia and New Zealand. What sort of insight can you share on the users of (nasal) snuff around these areas? From my experience, nasal snuff in USA is virtually unheard of. I’d venture a guess that it would be more likely to run into a cocaine user, than one who regularly uses snuff. I would guess that most users are current or former smokers who find nasal snuff as an alternative to smoking or ideal when smoking is prohibited. Also a guess is that the age-gender grouping is 25-65 and primarily male (skewed in the same manner that cigar or pipe smoking is seldom seen in females).

39, Male, USA We did a bit of a survey here in the past and at least as far as snuffhouse goes the average age was 37, and we are about 90% male. Most members are in the USA, but that’s probably based on the relative size of the USA’s population. There seems to be a more or less even distribution geographically in the US. The UK was second, probably becuase they have a much higher per captita snuff taking population (and snuff aware population for that matter) however its still largely an obscure thing even there. Germany was naturally third, and their snuff taking population is probably close to the UK’s proportion wise, but the forum is in English so we get fewer than we would. Also there are German and Polish snuff forums out there we are competing with. After that, its a smattering of individuals from other countries, with a bias towards English speaking countries (Canada primarily), and European countries (with the curious noticiable absence of France). Snuff taking in general is moderatly known and accepted in eastern Europe, Poland in particular. Also India is huge, but the usage is often oral. Brazil and South Africa have strong snuff tradtions as well.

B

That’s a nice summary, Xander. Good to know I’m one click above normal for once,as well.

S

39 male India.:the snuff taking culture in india is huge both oral as well as nasal. Here the women, mostly villagers ,are the predominant takers of snuff with the males opting for smoking

S

@ Xander, well said that man. As you know I’m in the UK. The other day I tried another pub that I had never been in before in my life. A stranger, in my home City! I was at the bar and took out my snuff box, took a dose. A chap next to me said:- “Mate can I have a pinch” From then on I just wasn’t drinking alone. I had to re-fill my box when I got home.

S

@ Xander, Quote. “(with the curious noticiable absence of France)” Don’t ask my for the facts, dates, or anything. But some time ago there was an understanding that English would be the spoken word. & French would be the written word internationally. We the British broke that agreement, I’m trying to write in English right now! I was heavily into International Short Wave Radio, some years back. Just write in English to Radio France International, I bet you will receive a French Letter Back.

X

Fair enough Snuff Head, but I tried searching the internet in French for snuff, and other than a snuff box collecting I have found very little. A few forums I’ve browsed through seem to indicate that most there are not aware of it, or think of it as anachronistic. The French speaking part of Switzerland seems to be aware though since snuff taking is still well known there. I guess I should have mentioned the Swiss as well, though we don’t get as many from there as we should.

S

In Asia besides India Tibet and Mongolia have a great snuff culture as well . Don’t know much about China though

X

@Vikas good points. I think in China it exists on a micro scale. Probably seen as a novelty. I think most in the US regard it as a novelty as well.

S

Just reading my latter part of what I just wrote, I think I’m bound for the out of context thread!

20, Male, US One guy who dipped knew about it from his baseball coach he was the one who told me it doesn’t cause your nose to fall off, snuff is kind of a submarket with poschl being the only real available brand at a couple tobacco shops before they pulled out which will hopefully be replaced by toque.

There is an African contingent spread across many tribes and countries that doesn’t have much of a voice and would be probably next to impossible to quantify. From the small amount I’ve read over the years it seems snuff can have deeper social meaning for some African people than for us - ie, used at specific functions etc. I grew up in the North of England and was aware that many Indian people, especially the older end, took snuff. I’ve also seen snuff and other oral tobaccos used by Asian people in London communities. Again, I think it might be difficult to quantify use in this group. Snuff is also used in Tibet and Mongolia.

S

19, Male, UK. Pretty much everyone I’ve ever come across knows what snuff is. I’ve never met anyone else who takes it, but I’ve had a few people take a pinch, and a lot of questions about it. But I’ve never met anyone who didn’t know what I was doing, or talking about.

That being said, I’ve talked to a few tobacco junkies who claimed to be familiar with nasal snuff but I’ve never once seen anybody using it in person, other than the 1 or 2 people I’ve offered it to and they accepted.

When I first started taking snuff in public in the early 80s I was always convinced people thought it was weird but Ive been doing it so long I never notice now. I wonder how much of it was just my own sense of unease. Ive handed it round at meetings at work and been surprised how often people would take a pinch without batting an eye. There are a lot of us out there (or else you woudn’t be able to buy SP at just about every small shop in the UK - we just tend to be a discrete bunch. Snuff with abandon I say…

S

51 male USA. I guess I was 46 when I started taking snuff.

P

53, male, USA Having strong roots in the American south, despite being born in Ohio, I knew about snuff from a young age, but the folks that used it were almost exclusively old ladies who dipped it. I only knew of nasal use through historical depictions in movies. The people around me who know I take snuff seem pretty cool with it, although few are willing to sample a pinch themselves. Of course, the people I work and socialize with would nearly all be categorized as open-minded and at least slightly eccentric.

62, male, English A more relevant study might be: Smoker, ex-Smoker, Never Smoked X <5 grams daily, >= 5 grams daily It is assumed that any respondents would be snuffers. The bi-variant frequency distribution could then be filtered through a chi-square for a test of statistical significance. I’ve never seen such a study but my guess is that an association does exist - it just needs to be demonstrated to a level of statistical certainty.

H

It’s amazing how few and far between snuff takers are. Also no wonder finding nasal snuff at regular retail is harder than finding hen’s teeth.

B

@ what snuffster said. If you act shady while snuffing it makes you look shady like you’re doing something illegal. If you do it like it’s nothing then people will think it’s nothing. What can they do if they think you’re doing something illegal? Not much. I find it funny that people will talk about how they never see a snuffer and how they snuff on the downlow. Yet snuff does sell in america. Makes you think most snuffers are in hiding.

X

@Pike Mopers nice job. I’m surprised that 18-25 skewed so highly.

P

^ I think that might have to do with the way us younguns are inclined to use internet-type-things. I’m sure if we took a survey of every snuff user world-wide that the 18-25 age group would be quite a bit smaller than the rest.

B

31, male, uk. A number of my friends are snuffers but none match the depth and breadth of my habit.

X

Good point, Pike. This survey is really only a sampling of Snuffhouse members, not snuff takers at large. I expect most snuff takers don’t think its worth reading about every day and just get on with taking snuff as part of their routine.

D

57, male, US I first used snuff when I was about 14 and took it up seriously about nine months ago. Haven’t looked back. I’ve never met anyone else who knows what nasal snuff is, other than my brother who took snuff with me when we were kids. He uses it occasionally now because he gets all my menthol snuffs. I’d love to turn someone onto it, but everyone who’s tried freaked out about the burn. At least a couple have given it a go; that’s something. Cool thread.

B

32,Male,USA I live in SW Florida and have not met one person that uses nasal snuff,i also do not of any store that sells it.

S

35, male, UK. I was first introduced to snuff by some younger people I vaguely knew at a pub several years ago who were taking it as a bit of a novelty. Since then I haven’t met anyone who uses it, and anyone I mention it to usually either hasn’t heard of it, or seems to think it’s an obscure thing of the past. However, there must be a market for it as the local tobacconist in town has always had a pretty good selection of snuffs, including several different Poschls and old and new English snuffs (Hedges l260, a few Toques, tapboxes of SG and HG, some WoS etc. etc.)

S

32, male, The Netherlands. I converted 2 friends (of which one female - to show the counter of this discussion that there áre some girl snuffers out there) to snufftaking. One of them did it because he couldn’t smoke for hours on his job as a flight steward. He saw me taking snuff once and it was the first time he saw it. From this month on, my nearby tobacco dealer sells some snuff (mainly Pöschl following their marketing campaign), I think my friends kept asking for it. I must say, it is very easy to pick up a tin just around the corner, instead of having it in the mail!

N

20, male, Bulgaria/student in London Ive been preaching about snuff pretty much ever since I started and have converted one friend although he’s not a regular user, but I do know a couple of guys my age who were pretty addicted. Too often people are reluctant to even try it at all, or if they do decide on it, it turns out that I’ve brought something not too beginner-friendly like a toast. From my observations not many among the students around me know about snuff. I still get the occasional odd look even though I don’t really care. Good point @snuffed, Id love to open up a snuff shop in London, only if I had the money… Im sure that with some good marketing it would take off eventually.
