Snuff Demographics, Nationality, Age, Gender

I tried researching this and came up with very little. I’m hoping others here can help. Please avoid political issues out of respect to our hosts who run a clean, friendly environment for discussion. Speculation and generalities are fine, I don’t think there is much available in factual study. UK, Western Europe, Canada, USA, Mexico, Australia and New Zealand. What sort of insight can you share on the users of (nasal) snuff around these areas? From my experience, nasal snuff in USA is virtually unheard of. I’d venture a guess that it would be more likely to run into a cocaine user, than one who regularly uses snuff. I would guess that most users are current or former smokers who find nasal snuff as an alternative to smoking or ideal when smoking is prohibited. Also a guess is that the age-gender grouping is 25-65 and primarily male (skewed in the same manner that cigar or pipe smoking is seldom seen in females).

20, Male, USA. I’ve never run into anyone taking snuff on the street but I’ve had a couple converts.

39, Male, USA We did a bit of a survey here in the past and at least as far as snuffhouse goes the average age was 37, and we are about 90% male. Most members are in the USA, but that’s probably based on the relative size of the USA’s population. There seems to be a more or less even distribution geographically in the US. The UK was second, probably becuase they have a much higher per captita snuff taking population (and snuff aware population for that matter) however its still largely an obscure thing even there. Germany was naturally third, and their snuff taking population is probably close to the UK’s proportion wise, but the forum is in English so we get fewer than we would. Also there are German and Polish snuff forums out there we are competing with. After that, its a smattering of individuals from other countries, with a bias towards English speaking countries (Canada primarily), and European countries (with the curious noticiable absence of France). Snuff taking in general is moderatly known and accepted in eastern Europe, Poland in particular. Also India is huge, but the usage is often oral. Brazil and South Africa have strong snuff tradtions as well.

That’s a nice summary, Xander. Good to know I’m one click above normal for once,as well.

39 male India.:the snuff taking culture in india is huge both oral as well as nasal. Here the women, mostly villagers ,are the predominant takers of snuff with the males opting for smoking

@ Xander, well said that man. As you know I’m in the UK. The other day I tried another pub that I had never been in before in my life. A stranger, in my home City! I was at the bar and took out my snuff box, took a dose. A chap next to me said:- “Mate can I have a pinch” From then on I just wasn’t drinking alone. I had to re-fill my box when I got home.

@ Xander, Quote. “(with the curious noticiable absence of France)” Don’t ask my for the facts, dates, or anything. But some time ago there was an understanding that English would be the spoken word. & French would be the written word internationally. We the British broke that agreement, I’m trying to write in English right now! I was heavily into International Short Wave Radio, some years back. Just write in English to Radio France International, I bet you will receive a French Letter Back.

Fair enough Snuff Head, but I tried searching the internet in French for snuff, and other than a snuff box collecting I have found very little. A few forums I’ve browsed through seem to indicate that most there are not aware of it, or think of it as anachronistic. The French speaking part of Switzerland seems to be aware though since snuff taking is still well known there. I guess I should have mentioned the Swiss as well, though we don’t get as many from there as we should.

In Asia besides India Tibet and Mongolia have a great snuff culture as well . Don’t know much about China though

@Vikas good points. I think in China it exists on a micro scale. Probably seen as a novelty. I think most in the US regard it as a novelty as well.

Just reading my latter part of what I just wrote, I think I’m bound for the out of context thread!

21, Male, Canada! Not many people at all out here seem to know what snuff tobacco is… But that’s ok, we’ll educate 'em! :stuck_out_tongue:

@Xander Thanks for the overview! @MikeMoose education indeed… saving the world one nostril at a time
