Just wondering… My snuffbox is hard to open and after a little strain it just blew up in a little cloud, settling onto my pant leg and then being brushed onto the floor. My two kitties are interested in this newly dusty floor. Should I care?

B

nope I wouldn’t make a habit of feeding it to them but … I had a cat that would eat loose leaf chew if you let him (which only happened once, though he’d try).

Well I think after a light cleaning it should be fine. I had a cat that would eat cigarettes if they were left out. Never seemed to harm her though obviously I made sure she couldn’t get them after the first few times.

I’m not a doctor (although I play one on TV) but I was lead to understand that tobacco is bad for animals. Don’t they use nicotine as a poison? An insecticide? I, personally, clean up the stuff before our ferocious Australian Terrier gets into it.

2 of my dogs have tried it, one got a good dose and one just a small sniff…no ill effects. The one that got the big dose, I could tell she was feeling it, but after that she avoids my snuff, as in hates the sight of the tins. The cat ignores it completely. I would worry about them ingesting a large quantity but a couple sniffs likely won’t hurt them. I had a farmer friend that had a horse that loved loose leaf chew…Beech Nut green if I remember right. I learned how to curse colorfully from listening to that old farmer when the horse would steal a whole pouch from his pocket. I knew all the words, but didn’t know they could be put together in that wonderful, poetic fashion.

Your talking about a tiny amount. There must be tons spread around my house and I have three cats, all hail and hearty. Don’t worry:)

My grandmother used to tell me that to de-worm a dog you feed them 1 cigarette (without the filter)for every 20 lbsof weight. I have no idea if there is any truth in that or am old wives tale. Edit- a google search turned up tons of sites that encourage tobacco to deworm animals including this one which mentions snuff http://www.motherearthnews.com/sustainable-farming/natural-dewormer-livestock-zmaz77mazbon.aspx

Our dog hasn’t tried it but when ever I’m doing sweet snuff, she sure has a interest in my nose

I have wormed several litters by sticking a pinch of Copenhagen in their mouths then holding their muzzles closed until they swallow it. We had a horse that would eat any discarded plug/pinch if tobacco as well as cigarette ends. I had a cat that would chew both right handed and left handed cigarettes if you left them on the table. But my goats won’t touch tobacco even though they will eat almost anything else you can think of.

B

it is however very dangerous to try and snuff pets.

D

are you snuffing cat nip by mistake

B

YES snuff is dangerous, any of my animals spill or contaminate any of my snuff and they will die. A slow and brutal death.

I never try to snuff pets but I had stuff a couple in my life time. I still have a parakeet somewhere, also a bearded dragon. I been looking for some glass eyes but you have to buy them in bulk.
