Snuff (containers) of Luxury and History

Hi all!

I’ve had a little bit of coin to throw around at this hobby as of late and I was wondering what some of you had in terms of antique, unique, or luxury items.

I recently purchased the Paul Pry snuff box from Toque to own a piece of history (though it is relatively unusable as it has a heavy lead content on the inside).

I also purchased a Nysberry, which is a very fancy tap box that is most likely used for…uhh…other powdered substances. But I still like the sleek design, standard of quality, and overall function.

What do you all have that costs a pretty penny? Or just looks cool? Historical? Rams Horn?

When I was getting started, I bought a “box” made from a split 1964 Kennedy Half Dollar coin (silver, and my birth year) from a seller on Etsy. Amazing piece of art, though it turned out to be a bit small for pinching from. I’ve also worn out a couple of the original Posh chrome bullets that while not vintage, weren’t really cheap. I also have one of the titanium spoons that were around a few years back (perhaps still are), though where it is, I’ve no idea.

I appreciate the antique snuff related items, but at this point, I just pinch from tins.

Thanks for sharing @mecompco ! I think I have a spoon or two missing myself

I’ve been on the hunt for a quality snuffing experience on the go, but I keep returning to the same thing too…pinching out of the tin. So it’s funny you should say that.

Nice to have a few things though, I suppose. I like to switch it up.

Having recently received free with my last order from Mr. Snuff, @clsmoothie, one of their Snuffhouse snuff boxes, I must say I’m impressed. It’s plastic, and nothing fancy, but it works. Big enough to pinch from (I’ll never use the tap port), yet compact enough to be unobtrusive. For $6.99, I think it’s well worth the price if a utilitarian box is what one seeks. I don’t particularly recommend it for WE and the like as it leaks a bit around the cover hinge, but I think any snuff that’s not absolute flour would be fine.

I also like to reuse the little NTSU plastic cans, they are just the right size, and the lid seals tightly.

Does yours happen to say “sunffhouse.com” on the obverse (i.e., “sunff” instead in “snuff”)?

I’ve just looked, ha ha, it does! Perhaps that’s the reason it was free. Still, a nice piece of kit.

Yep. That’s why they were free, I imagine too. Got one on the way myself!

I think I have one on the way too (does it say in your order if you got one or not?).

Looking forward to seeing the functionality and humorous typo.

Wow, that NYSBERRY looks good but the price is eye watering, I’d not want to take that out, I think I’d cry if I lost it.

Hello! I was very lucky. I found a man in my city who brought a lot of antique snuff bottles from Germany for me. I am very happy and do not sell them. I’m just sharing my joy and bragging

@Tc2642 That’s a good point. Just a splurge item for me I guess.

@PrincOstin I really like those. Thanks for bragging! I like the third, small gray bottle the best. Interesting corners on it!

@PrincOstin the last one is pretty nice with the logo of Perlesreuter Schmalzler

Yes, it is small and comfortable. Just right to carry)

I doubt that I was ever able to use Schmalzler tobacco, but there is a bottle)) I don’t even remember how Schmalzler differs from classic snuff…

Schmalzlers are coarser cut and fermented with molasses and fruit sauce and it is oiled!
Those are traditional German Schmalzler bottles.

Whatever the price I like to carry my snuff elegantly but I understand some like something more utilitarian

. I prefer hallmarked silver boxes and EPNS is nice too. Bone and wood boxes I like. I even have a 19th century papier mache one. When I smoked cigarettes I always transferred them to a silver cigarette case. Its more stylish than a cardboard pack. My favourite snuff box is pictured. I love that it’s 206 years old. It’s my special occasion box and goes well with my suit. It’s very nice to offer snuff to others from it.

I prefer hallmarked silver boxes … except when you temporarily trade your beautiful silver snuffbox for a snuff bullet! It was so long ago now that my memory fades, but I seem to recall you were commissioned by a trade journal (probably Jacques Cole) to test a new-fangled bullet for a week and report back. Is your report still available anywhere?
