Hi all well I have decided to invest in a snuff box . I don’t know why but I like the idea of having my snuff in an old snuff box which could have been used by anyone and could have interesting history behind it .the mistery of it all adds to the hobbie in my eyes . Now here is the catch or should I say problem to be honest I don’t trust ebay . I have been ripped of 3 times now and can’t bring myself to use it again . Now were in the uk can I drive to or visit to buy a nice snuff box ??? Any ideas I live in scunthorpe nr lincs at the moment if that helps at all ??? Thanks for any help on this …
I can probably spare a decent one if you fancy taking a drive over the bridge (about 10 miles as the crow flies).
Ebay isn’t the only source by a long stretch, look at the London Silver vaults site, but the online dealers can be very expensive. You would be down to whatever bargains you could pick up at antique dealers so as such there is no specific place to my knowledge where you would be guarenteed getting there and finding what you want. You won’t get a better offer than Tony’s to be honest.
E-bay always gets me pissy. I have over a half a dozen items, all in need of repair before use. I knew that but got them anyway because they were so cheap. New is new! Used is used!, Cheap is cheap! Old is old! If you walk around town with a big wad of money you can get just about anything you want…Now, what was the name of that town?
@davec32: What kind of snuff box do you want? Wood? Papier mache? Silver? Pewter? New or antique? The majority of snuff box on ebay are old and in need or repair. I looked through ebay for over 4 months before I got a nice silver snuff box that wasn’t too expensive. Patience is the key here, don’t bid until the last minute to avoid driving up the price. But if it goes beyond what you can afford, then just let it go.

Snuff store also do a nice range of snuff boxes, including silver & pewter, but if you want antiquity, either go to an antique shop or look up ermtony!
I have only good experiences with ebay - 320+ transactions. One has to know what the business is about. If you go for little cheap pill boxes, they probably won’t work for snuff, and you got to clear up any questions before buying/selling ANYthing on ebay! Snuff boxes on ebay are not old and battered useless boxes sold by crooks! I strongly resent antipathy based in ignorance - against ebay or other things. I happily offer my assistance as a historian and collector to any one here, who wants to trade for snuff boxes on ebay. I have been a seller there for 5 years, and nobody rips me off :o)
to resent is to not understand esp In my case it has nothing to do with antipathy or ignorance , i was one of the first people to have been ripped of with the paypal credit card scam thats something you cant predict buddy… so i have a right to feel the way i do about ebay hence i wont use it .

I have been ripped off on Ebay. Its all just a luck of the draw. Some get scammed, some don’t.
There are good sellers and bad sellers on eBay, same as anywhere else.
I got mine off ebay, it was exactly as described ans serves me well. Though it does impart a woody scent into snuff that’s in it for more than a few hours
