Any divers on here I was wondering if anyone dives and knows if the added sinus pressure and snuff has any reprocussions good or bad
imagine the sneezing or nose runs… id avoid it around the time to be honest. just like ill use snus if under a bike helmet. dont want to sneeze/dribble snot everywhere.
Main thing is, can you still clear your ears? Congestion is gonna be bad for that, so avoid snuff that causes it.
That’s what I was thinking was ear clearing issues but its probably not worth trying
I think it would be hard to take underwater :)) Seriously thought, I haven’t scuba dived in a long time but snuff actually helps keep my sinuses clear. Just be sure you clear it all out and are drip free before you put your mask on. That could get nasty.
Regardless of snuff use it is best to avoid rapid pressure changes when you are having sinus issues. Be it scuba or sky diving, or air travel for that matter where you may experience rapid pressure changes that clogged sinuses would be aggravated by. When it comes to snuff, I would think it best to avoid use of anything that may clog you up after use as you will be in a disadvantageous position to adequately clear your sinuses while under water, which could present issues with equalization as you make a decent or ascent. Again, I would avoid this activity when you have sinus issues- regardless. I mention sky diving as I was once a semi frequent jumper and can attest to the pain you will suffer should you go to 12,000 feet with even a slight head cold and then plummet down. The same could be said about SCUBA, but which is likely easier to manage provided you maintain contact with your dive buddy.
I’m another who finds it helps keep the sinuses clear. I used to have terrible trouble with ear pain on planes due to pressure changes. I remember that my Doctor told me that there was something wrong with my ears, because I was unable to perform a test in which I was to deliberately ‘pop’ my ears and then ‘unpop’ them. He said it wasn’t serious, but neither was it ideal. I’m sorry for the simplistic explanation, but I was around 11 years old at the time, and I have only a vague recollection of the event. Since discovering snuff, I have found that it has two great benefits when it comes to air travel: 1. I’m not jonesing for nicotine throughout the entire journey. 2. I can ‘pop’ my ears easily, which prevents the discomfort due to the pressure. I have never SCUBA dived (though I would like to one day), so I’m afraid I don’t know if the pressure changes on a plane are analagous to those brought about by diving. I can say, however, that not only does snuff not cause a problem for me during pressure changes due to altitude, my ears don’t seem to ‘pop’ properly UNLESS I use snuff.
whenever I get really bad congestion I dive down to the bottom of the pool and the pressure on my sinuses relieve any congestion I may have be it for only a few minutes sometimes.
I’m loving the discussions I haven’t got out diving since June but love it and want to try with snuff and learn about it ill go do a 50-60 ft dive without and then another with. I also have some ear clearing issues but as long as I take allergy pills for a day or 2 prior to the dive trip I’m fine and the whole trip I also find large ammounts of alcohol help me if used wrecklessly the night before a dive
I’m here to tell you not to screw around with your ears while diving. I’m dependent on a hearing aid due to a diving accident. It was rotten bad luck, but be careful.
I’ve just started using snuff and have 1 dive down to 55 feet emitidtly after takeing a few pinches I noticed that I didn’t need to surface for a smoke break and when I did hit my j valve and surfaced that I had the most runniest nose ever more so then any other dive Satuday I have another few dives planned and I will update my finding but from my one dive with snuff I really don’t think it’s a problem I plan on using snuff on every dive as the tank monkies will not let me smoke next to the air intake when they fill my tanks Hope this helps
Uh oh things came up I will be spending 40 minutes at 25 feet Sunday for my test. I will take cheese and bacon as my test snuff I will fill my nostrils pre dive and then I will dive 25 feet down to a fake submarine Wich I will then fill with air and pull out 10 gram can of cheese and bacon . I will snuff inside fake submarine if can is truley air/ water tight. If not I will take American scotch in ziplock back to submarine to test. I figure this will let me test snuff and snuff containers My preliminary test lead me to think that snuff and scuba is ok and I imagine my cheese and bacon will stay drie
Wow, the ultimate snuff-scuba test. Be careful of the containers. If they are airtight, they might implode at high pressure. Even 25 feet might crush a reasonably strong (at sea level) tin, and destroy its airtight integrity. Good luck on your test!
Haha my cousin thinks i will get trapped in the submarine again due to some kinda snuff related blockage I however am 99.9 percent sure I will surface with a very runny nose . I’ll try to borrow a camera and post on YouTube that should answer or prove any questions on snuff and scuba
I got a badass can I dive with its cheap and very comparable to gopro. The intovo sport pro check it out I’m working on building handles with light clips out of PVC before I get out next
I have 28 logged dives got certified a little over a year ago
I will check out camera it sounds interesting . I have unknown amount of unlogged dives if I were to guess I would pick 300-500 . I got certified in 1992 took a 20 something year break and got back into it . Mabey 2 or 3 years ago however I only have one or two dives while using snuff I already know snuff for me while diving poses no problem but experiment will give me a reason to mess around . I figured on bringing 3 or 4 toque tins down with akiselzer inside to see if I really need to tape them to make them air tight as I’ve read on here . One I will try to oring seal and another make a gasket for. The other two will be stock. If water gets inside the alkaselzer will alert me right away I was orinaly going to test a double hose regulator but I saw this thread made an account and figured I may as well test a few more things . It’s way off subject but my cousin and some friends made some stupid parody videos of that old show sea hunt they can be found by googling “non metro divers” I know one shows this fake submarine I will be testing stuff in on Sunday
Where are you from @joeym35a2 I’d like to go dive this fake submarine
Coos bay Oregon . Not sure where your at or what vis your used to but here in ocean a good day is 10 feet. The main lake i dive currently vis at 50 feet deep is 1 foot. But the 1920s chuck wagon filled with logging artifacts and china we just found more then makes up for the crappy vis. I’m still searching for the hidden snuff bottle and whiskey bottles. I know they are there !
Test done I had no problems with snuff and scuba. All torque cans leeked and are not air tight at Least at 25 feet anywase video camera also gave me problems so I’m not sure how much footage I got The camera turned off on it’s own so I doubt I got snuff in submarine footage My dry suit also leeked however that full can of snuff was safe. Also I discovered that filling nose pocket in mask with snuff works untill you sneeze you then have snuff burning your eyes Flooding mask only resulted in brown snuff mud burning my eyes All in all it was a good experiment wish I could of had a better camera and a diving partner to film the snuff mask for me
