snuff and nicotine

Ok so I hear and read that nicotine in larger doses gives you a calming effect , and nicotine in smaller doses acts as a stimulant … Now now no matter how much I take I never get the calming side of nicotine why is this any ideas ??? Am I on my own with this one ? Does not matter what snuff I take I always get a stimulated feeling not calm and I long for the calm ???

i’m no doctor but I’ve heard some say that a “drug” will only amplify whatever mood you are in when you take it (calling snuff a drug here in a very loose term.) I guess there is some truth to it–if you’re pissed when you start drinking, chances are you’ll be more inclined to throw hammers when you’re drunk!!

I find less of a ‘calming’ effect from Nicotine and more of a ‘stabilising’ response. This greatly depends on which Dopamine receptors are working for the individual when they get a dose. If you have others in your family that have been, or are addicted to Nicotine. it’s quite possible that a genetic pre-disposition to the drug is responsible for it’s effect on you. Over a few generations, DNA strands can be ‘tilted’ in a direction favourable to addiction or at least a habituation towards use of Tobacco. In other words, some people are born addicts whether they like it or not. Nicotine is both a stimulant and a depressant, not dissimilar to Alcohol, Cannabis, or Sugar (if you want to extend the link further.) Closing your eyes and breathing very deeply can increase the relaxant effect after taking Snuff. It will reduce psychosomatic effects and give a sense of ease, in general.

Take a big pinch. I’ll wait. Lay down in bed or on the couch (or floor, whatever.) and close your eyes. Relax. And by that I mean systematically intentionally consciously relax every muscle in your body, one by one. Breathe in through your mouth and out through your nose. Relax the muscles you just realised were tense again. All those thoughts of the day that are screaming through your mind at a mile (km?) a minute, well imagine a big box. Open the door to the box, and place those thoughts inside. Relax. Breathe deep. Do this a couple ten minutes each morning and evening and you’d be surprised how much more relaxed you’ll feel. And, by the way, how much more relaxing your morning and evening snuffs are. For more reading, check out Ram Dass.

A drug cannot be a stimulant and depressant at the same time. A drug can be a stimulant and narcotic at the same time or a narcotic and depressant at the same time or a depressant and halucinogen at the same time. If you want to feel the full relaxing power of snuff, I encourage you to pack your nose full of Ntsu. It doesn’t slow down your metabolism, so therefore its not a depressant. It does speed it up making it a stimulant. However the real reason for nicotine’s power is the semi narcotic effect it induces. Narcotics massage the pleasure centers releasing dopamine. You can overdo it though, so be careful.

zonesix, i have been reading some sites re ram dass it all seems to be based around nlp and eft (nlp=Neuro-linguistic programming ) eft =Emotional Freedom Techniques… interesting stuff … zonesix and snuffypants you have something their i have been thinking alot about my snuff use …i have to say i used snuff to give up smoking so if you think about it i used snuff when i was stressed or on edge right from the start so now i have made a kinda link to stressed or stimualted when taking snuff. and to reset that thought or link im doing what you said , snuffing closing my eyes chilling out ,that way im making a new link to snuff which is relaxing not stimulating thank guys .this is why i love this forum everyone helps each other its fantastic… dave

@Xander,which Ntsu do you prefer, Plain or Menthol? I find the Plain delivers the nic kick faster but it does not last so long. Menthol is slower to deliver but the flow of nicotine lasts longer.

Pieter, I did not really notice a difference in length of time. Although my menthol one I did not air it out as much so the ammonia I’m sure increased the nicotine intake rate. I would buy the menthol again but only if the plain was not available.

I must read up on this ntsu everyone is loving it lol why ? Is it course .med ,fine ground and what moisture is it ? Its from south Africa isn’t it ??? Just what is it about ntsu lol

@ davec: luckily for you there is a UK seller and its only 99p a tin there. Its the coursest moistest snuff you will ever meet. Its also extremly potent (plus you can get a lot in at once). However, a lot of people don’t like the smell of it.

When I first opened the tin, it smelled of old gym socks. Let it air out overnight, and now it’s quite pleasant.

A drug cannot be a stimulant and depressant at the same time. A drug can be a stimulant and narcotic at the same time or a narcotic and depressant at the same time or a depressant and halucinogen at the same time. - Xander In a test tube, this is true, but dosages can significantly alter the effect. This is why a couple of stiff drinks can be bracing, but throw a few more down and you start falling asleep. It’s less the drug itself than neurotransmitter/receptor activity, which can and indeed does produce contradictory results. Benzodiazipines are a classic example of this. They bind to GABA receptors in the brain, which on paper, qualifies it as a sedative/hypnotic. However, people who are habituated to them often act very aggressively. Alcohol shows this feature, as well. With Tobacco use, it gets a bit murkier. First smoke/snuff/dip of the morning to wake up. Last one at night before bed. It’s having the same effect, but due to the brain’s neurotransmitter activity at those times of day, the brain is tricked into producing the desired response. A lot of that is also related to typical wishful thinking that is common in an addiction scenario: “The drug does exactly what I want it to.” On one level, the user is correct, even though they are ‘technically’ wrong.

@ Bart - Throwing hammers?!!? Ha! That made me laugh. I, also think it’s more of a stabilizer than anything. I used to get a real speedy buzz from snuff and a calming effect from snus/dip. Now I’m back to not much of a buzz at all except for that first ten minutes or so with a snus and especially first thing in the morning.

Simple fact: we all respond differently to drugs, which of course nicotine is. I can shovel ntsu up my nose and detect no more nicotine than if I was smelling a daisy. Even as a kid I was very hardened to it; I could inhale non filter cigarettes and feel nothing. Possibly I’m born to use tobacco…
