How does snuff affect lung capacity? Is it true, that the smallest particles of snuff will get in my lungs and will cause the same effect(only smaller) on lungs as the cigarettes does?
I can’t see how, enough to cause issues would make one choke. The smoke in smoking is the route cause of the trouble rather than the tobacco.
@utnubu Where did you hear this?
I can understand if you had issues from snuffing a gram of d. white from the back of your hand but not from anything else lol
The smallest particles? If you are concerned about what goes into your lungs as far as particulate matter is concerned then you may want to stop breathing outside air and live on an oxygen bottle. First off tobacco leaf is not what causes lung cancer…the chemicals produced from burning it do that. Secondly, any stray “particles” that managed to get further than the back of your throat would adhere to the insides of your trachea long before they reached your lungs. Thirdly you are not inhaling hard enough by sniffing to send the tobacco into your lungs in some kind of dust cloud, your sniffing it into your nose, not breathing it in. In short. No…it is not in any way, shape, or form true that snuff will get in your lungs and cause cancer. That is 100% false, not going to happen, whomever told you that has no idea about what they are talking about where snuff is concerned and seems a little fuzzy on how your lungs, breathing, and the human body function in general. Sounds to me like someone just made that up in their head because they thought it sounded good but it grossly innaccurate. Snuff has never been shown to have ANY effect on lung capacity because it doesn’t get in your lungs. Zip. No effect.

“Is it true, that the smallest particles of snuff will get in my lungs and will cause the same effect(only smaller) on lungs as the cigarettes does?” Such a lot of nonsense. No, is the short answer. Listen to what the previous poster said - everything he says is true, and may be verified. I’m pushing on 62, have been taking snuff daily since about 13 or 14 years of age, still mountain-cycle, hike long distances in difficult terrain, have lungs like bellows and possess the constitution of an ox. I take at least eight grams of snuff each and every day, and will continue to do so for the next forty years.
Sorry, I had a bit of trouble posting this for some reason. I have been using snuff for about three years now and I do get somewhat of a tickle in my lungs some times when using certain snuffs, American scotches in particular. I don’t think that it will have an impact upon future lung function though, the feeling goes away after a few minutes. I do agree with everything these gentlemen said about the safety of the tobacco leaf as opposed to smoke, as well as the comments about the outside air. And it certainly doesn’t stop my from using the scotches or any other snuffs, I simply use a slightly more careful “technique” when taking the fine and dry varieties, but I think that is pretty common. I should also note that I could be more sensitive than the average snuff user. I have had asthma since childhood so I have gotten used to really being aware of what is going on in my chest all the time over the years.
PhilipS … You my friend, are a champion
No. What always amazes me, is that even people come up with this crap. Why doesn’t anyone ask this about walking in NY between all the cars in rush-our ? THAT will damage your lungs for sure So, my dear utnubu , have another sniff snuff snooffy.
Sniff Sniff Hooray!
I was just wondering. I am doing some sports, that require huge lung capacity, so I am very sensitive about any damage to lungs. Thank you for all your answers
@utnubu, what kind of sport? Muff diving perhaps?
If its going in your lungs, you need to work on your snuffing technique.
Just breathing the air in your home and in a typical city, in fact even breathing the air in the country if you live near a dirt road where cars create a lot of dust OR if you breathe the air near a farm where cows fart will do far far more damage to you lungs than snuff ever will. @Pieter that or competitive balloon animal blowing.
@PieterClaassen : That actually made me laugh out loud
If anything snuff will help clean out your lungs. You could stick to schmalzlers or moist snuffs to limit the exposure to your lungs. I personally enjoy a bit of lung dusting every now and then.
I would wear a dust mask if I worked in a snuff mill. I mixed cement when I was younger and came home with loads of lime dust in my nose. It did start to bother my chest after a time, so I started wearing a dust mask. Anyway, the nose is an excellent natural filter, so long as you don’t overwhelm it. You can pulverize your snuff until it clouds the room with fine particles and breathe in deeply. If you use Grand Cairo and the air is saturated enough, and you stay in that room long enough, I have it on good authority that you will begin to experience prescience and utimatley can maniplate the fabric of space-time. There are however, disfiguring mutations that go along with this.
We are already the disfigured mutations that manipulate the fabric of space/time. So as not to be misunderstood, I do not recommend breathing any dust too deeply. Save the deep breaths for the cleanest air you can find.
