snuf and colds ??

I have been reading a lot about his lately , i did a copy and paste from another site , "I jiust knew someone would ask. You’ve made my day! When I was a lad my parents were caretakers at the Bottom Snuff Mill. I learned a lot about their history and that of the Mill, and from around 1745 to the time we left they had a 200-year record of having no employees off work for either a cold or the flu. I did write to a laboratory where they were investigating the Common Cold. I heard they checked it, but they never replied with their conclusions. what do you think does snuff help with colds etc or is it a myth… " i used to get bad bad migranes and pressure in my head synus wise but i have not used any of my rizatripan migrane tablets or sudafed for months now maybe their is something in it ???

I would guess that a lot of the claims come from the effect on the sinuses, and not that actual tobacco having magical properites. Snuff makes the sinuses moist and keeps them flowing, this is the same reason that miners used snuff. So I suppose that if your sinuses are constantly cleaning themselves out, there might be a lower chance of a virus hanging around.

Tobacco has antiseptic qualities and in the case of medicated Snuff, several ingredients that are good for clearing Sinuses and thinning out Mucous. Hedges L261 was developed by a chemist to do exactly that. It was used much the same way as Sudafed and still is by many people. It was also used to treat Migraines.

My father didn´t have a single cold since he uses snuff (Gletscherprise exclusively for about 17 years), which I´d say is rather uncommon and leads me to the conclusion that there must be a connection. I totally aggree with cstokes4, this makes perfect sense. If I´d be snuffing for a longer time, than I´m actually doing, I could share some personal insight, too. Unfortunately I only do so for about 9 months.

I’ve had 3 colds in the past 3 months…however I do work in a confined place with lots of people (the county jail) and I don’t snuff at work. I get less heartburn since I switched mostly from cigarettes to snuff, though.

I’ve had 1 cold since I started snuffing, and the cold seemed less severe and lasted a shorter time than normal. I don’t know if it was coincidental, or the snuff.

Well, I had a two day break from snuff and I’m all bunged up and mucousy. It’s the first time since I started regularly taking snuff. Perhaps there’s a link.

Its a barrier, slightly anti-spetic and as said keeps the sinuses moving. I get very few, if any colds, when I am using snuff exclusively. Having said all that there are so many variables at work it would be very difficult to verify any of this without very well controllled and extensive double blind testing etc.
