I’m smoking too many cigarillos right now and although mostly enjoyable they take their toll. Have a bad throat right now and want to wake up with snuff (for the first time) tomorrow instead of smoking. Have only been having a few pinches a day but want to do it almost full time now.

A

The wanting is the thing. Snuff can certainly supply every bit of nic that you need. Follow the classic quit advice - take a pinch whenever you want a smoke or are thinking of smoking; after a while (differs for different people but can happen very quickly) your craving will be for snuff not smokes. My personal add on to that is to put as much ‘ritual’ on to it as you do with cigarettes, by which I mean savour the moment and stretch it out. Treating yourself to a snuff box also makes a differemce IMO, kind of makes a statement to yourself. Good luck and just try again if you fall off the wagon. There’s a lot of good threads about how people stopped so have a play with the search engine.

J

Not a bad new year’s resolution.

S

Best of luck. Many of those here have succeeded following snuffster’s advice +1 on the snuffbox.

Depending on the day, I can stave off smoking for hours taking snuff, but not always. I’ve been a heavy smoker for 40+ years and it’s hard for me to get all the nicotine my body tells me it wants. One thing that helps is using a powerful electronic cigarette between times; that does supply sufficient nicotine, just doesn’t satisfy my taste for tobacco the way snuff does. I’d rather take snuff than anything I’ve tried, and my smoking is diminishing on its own. Someday I’ll forget all about it.

S

Thanks all of you. Well in the morning i had a bit of a hangover so wasn’t a wise time to quit just reached for a cigarillo on waking. For me it seems i can snuff after snuff after snuff OR smoke after smoke after smoke. I find it hard alternating between the two. Pipes i can live without but i love a good cigar and i have quite a stash of them. Cheers all, maybe a snuff box would be a good idea.

O

I’ve taken to using a pipe once or twice a day when I really have the need to smoke. It’s a great and safer alternative to ciggies.

S

I might buy expensive cigars so i could only afford one a day… and snuff for the rest of the time. Sounds like the least painful option for me.

B

Just curious, sleepwalker…what kind of cigarillo do you smoke?

S

Mehari’s

R

I think Toque SP Extra helps me most when I feel like having a cigarette. Second would be Fubar Grunt. Take a pinch every time you feel like a cigarette.

N

When I decided to quit smoking cigarettes (for good this time), I found a bullet to be helpful. It provided me with a thingy to fiddle with and a quick blast from it is the closest thing to a drag off a smoke in my snuffing experience. Just my $0.02.

S

I have a bullet but it only dispenses a tiny amount - i think it might be for stronger things.

S

@ bipolarbear1968 Yes usually Mehari’s but if i go for anything a bit bigger i go for La Paz Primeros.

S

My body is telling me tonight is the night… just put in a nice order of Poschl snuff that i don’t own already.

B

Ive been smoking Marlboro Blacks, which have up to 3.2 milligrams of nic in it, but i have asthma so im making the swithc to snuff as well. I have a few really high nicotine snuffs to helo me too =D

S

Malboro Blacks, jeez - they don’t sound too nice. Good luck mate.

P

Marlboro Blacks got me off smoking cigarettes for ever! I coughed like a cowboy and spit like snake while I was smoking them. Then switched to Reds but it was to late, I’ve had my chips. Thank goodness for Marlboro Blacks!!!

B

I have smoked between 1-4 packs a day of Marlboro Reds for the last 14 years and i also am looking to finally quit smoking. I find snuff does do a good job at taking care of my nicotine cravings but sometimes i do need to have a dip of Grizzly or Copenhagen,i also like snus when i have a supply of it. I have a pretty large pipe collection and greatly enjoy smoking a pipe at night but that doesn’t really do anything for the nicotine cravings. I have found Rooster snuff is the best for me for the nicotine cravings.

B

Isn’t Grizzly still safer than smoking?

B

I dont think so, I can smoke for weeks and still feel the same but if i dip for weeks than my lip turns to leather and my gums recede lol

I know this is probably an insane tactic, but when I moved over to snuff exclusively (having snuffed and smoked since I was a teenager) I said to myself that if I was ever going out of my mind for a smoke that I would just have one and forget all that guilt bullshit that we put on it. As a result I kind of had a safety net but the fact of knowing it was there allowed me to forget smoking. You know how it is when you stop, you are forever thinking about cigs. I can’t explain or account for how that helped but it surely did. Over 3 years in, cigarettes are now just another form of tobacco as opposed to something to feel bereaved about. Last time I smoked was in summer, just felt like a pack, bought one, smoked em, forgot about em. I could easily (and probably will) go to next summer without a smoke, but when I do it will be on my terms. Works for me. Lesson over.

B

@snuffster I had a friend who ever time he realized he had to quit smoking he’d last a few months then start smoking 1/2 more then last time.

E

Also try adding snus to the mix… I think snuff and snus complement eachother appealing to two different senses… Also snuff is great for the quick lift and snus keeps me level. I never tried to quit smoking myself it’s just I find more pleasure with snus/snuff. I usually take a good pinch and right after pop in a portion. What’s fun is the combos like toasts with pure tobacco flavored snus and also menthols/mints with mint snus.

H

I think snuffster should write the book on the subject of quitting smoking! He’s dead on about how to do this thing. “The wanting IS the thing”… and snuff can supply that.

J

I like all forms of backy and frequently switch which type I use, now about these marlboro blacks they sound deadly wonderfull were do I find them!

B

Micheltn, I believe Sleepwalker is just looking for support and some encouragement. I know how hard it is to quite smoking and I believe we can be somewhat of a good influence. I know where he is coming from is all.

A

I don’t think he’ll be making any more comments like that.

D

I love snuff and snus, however as a person who has been through so many rounds to quit smoking they fixed everything for me but the habit aspect, and hand to mouth thing. The e-cig was the only thing that cut that. So now I am a “tri-user” I guess. But this trifecta has kept me away from cigarettes and with no desire for a cigarette what so ever, so I will take what I can get. Ken

S

I’ve been smoking half the amount (or less) of cigars and doing a few pinches of snuff a day. I switched to bigger cigars which make me think whether i want them before smoking them. And it’s going really well. The nasal snuff is useful for those times when i’m just on my way out or something and haven’t time to spark up a big one.

A

I found the best habit substitute was my snuff box. If you get a nice one its very tactile and you can make it part of the ritual

D

Yeah a snuff box makes a big difference to the whole experience. Ken

S

Yes i might get a wooden snuff box at some point - they are cool.

J

I’ve been digging my new snuffbox; it definitely adds an air of ritual which is important. I still smoke cigarettes (MUCH less than I used to) and for me, it’s not the same unless I light up with a Zippo; just part of my thing. I like scotches mainly, and it’s rather awkward to be lugging around that cardboard can with a tin lid, especially if it’s half-empty and the cardboard has worn to the point the lid won’t seat tightly. I have a few 10g smashboxes but I have big mitts so it’s kinda hard to get a good pinch unless they’re very full…long and the short of it, you’ll like a wooden snuffbox.

N

@James S.: Get a pipe nail and use it as a snuff spoon to scoop the scotch out of the smashbox. Pipe nails are cheap and available at any tobacconist and make great snuff spoons.

J

You can put Scotches in fricken’ anything! How’s about loading your Zippo with Scotch. Now THAT would be cool.

J

@Nachman: You know, I do have a pipe nail kicking around somewhere and keep meaning to find it. I have used Carol’s idea (Carol, where’ve you been anyway?) of a pen cap, as the little clip part works well too… @Juxtaposer: A Zippo snuffbox, eh? Hmm, that’s an interesting concept. Maybe instead of a wick and flint wheel, a tube and small piston with a trigger release that flings a bump into the ol’ schnozz. Heh.

S

I tried snus and have a few tins here but i’m not so keen on the juice you get. Nasal snuff can be nice but i got bits of blood come out when i blow my nose and the sneezing can be quite bad. I’m sure once i master nasal snuff a bit more i will take it more often with the cigars.

H

I’m quite sure that I stumbled upon a Zippo styled flask online. I have bought a couple of 1 oz stainless steel flasks off of ebay that work really well for carrying snuff. Roderick give me the idea to search them out with the Toque flask. His is too purty for me to carry around much and scratch up!

S

(sorry just edited that first sentence as meant snus not snuff)

J

I liked snus; used it to kick cigs for a while, but ever since PACT and the fact I decided to start smoking again (albeit at a much reduced rate) decided it for me…no more snus for now. My faves were Roda Lacket and Goteburg Rape No. 2.

S

Cigars and snuff are my favourites. There’s pros and cons to both. Not sure if anyone else gets this too when snuffing (just menthols?) but i get traces of tobacco in my phlegm in mouth even after completely clearing nose.

J

Come to think of it, I have considered giving e-cigs a try, but since I don’t want to get sucked into acquisition disorder I’m thoroughly reading (and enjoying) www.vapingguides.com. Even if there was a decent disposable out there I’d give it a whirl. We’ll see…
