So according to the news around here regarding the sale of tobacco to people 18, the new law is to be set to raise the age requirements to people who are 21 or over. What are your views and opinions about this?
In my opinion, this is good to see the age limit go to 21 because this will make it so people have a want for tobacco. Maybe more people around here will be finding snuff? People who are under 18 buy vapor e-cigs because its a trend and they can smoke under 18. The new law will affect the e-cig market because of the taxes that will be imposed as well the minors can’t get hold of an e-cig until 21.
I don’t know what to make of this yet… I guess it’s good for trying to keep younglings off and away from tobacco. But on the other hand the kids will always find a way to get ahold of it. Personally I don’t really care cause I’m 23 now lol. I don’t get the whole e cig thing myself. Tried it but it was like smoking candy. Not for me. E cigs are everywhere in puyallup. There is 7 vape stores within one mile of my house. All in all if someone wants the N they will get it one way or another. I don’t see this law changing anything.
While I think anything that helps people put off smoking is probably worth trying, I just can’t get my head around the fact that our kids can go to war and die at 18, but not drink or, now, smoke…Weird logic.
They just passed the same thing here in Hawaii, everyone marching to the drum of the ‘tobacco is evil and people are too stupid to make their own choices’ nanny state. I think if you’re old enough to be legally considered an adult (and be drafted into the armed forces) then you are old enough to make all of your own decisions, including the decision to buy a beer or a deck of smokes.
I’m with the above, when you turn 18 you are legally an adult and get charged as an adult but you can’t buy smokes or beer… nonsense. If you aren’t old enough to buy smokes or beer how can they call you an adult?
If the drinking and smoking age is 21 then that is when you should be legally considered an adult.
@n9inchnails, agreed. Unfortunately, if the age of adulthood became 21 then there goes roughly 50% of the military, the 50%that does most of the dangerous stuff. I can’t reconcile the number of otherwise great sailors I had to be part of comdemning simply because they were in possession of alcohol ‘underage’. Can’t imagine what it would be like having to bust someone down for having a pack of marbs.
i find it funny it’s 21 to buy tobacco ( in my town of Hudson as well ), but you can buy liquid nicotine at 18 ( or under???) that’s kinda dumb.
The thinking is: if an 18 year old is smoking he / she will influence younger high schoolers, but if you’re 21, you’re not… whatever.
I don’t personally smoke cigarettes but i think there needs to be a consistent age of “ADULTHOOD”…
it’s like: 15 to consent to marry, 16/18 consent to sex, 18 to go to war / vote, 21 to drink / smoke, 25 to get a rental car, 50 for AARP wtf?
The weirdest proposal I’ve heard so far is for the state of Tasmania in Australia, where they are suggesting that the age at which you can legally buy tobacco be raised by one year each year, so that eventually no-one will be legally permitted to do so and nobody will smoke.
It’s a sort of grandfather clause thing. Those of us who are already addicted and too weak-minded to quit will be permitted to continue to go on smoking until we die, which they are assuming and hoping probably won’t take too long, but members of the new generation will be prevented from engaging in such suicidal behaviour.
