Smoked a cigarette the other day and hated it

I was with a friend the other night who smokes and we were both having a few beers. He rolled a couple of cigarettes and gave me one. I smoked it through habit really and I have to say I really didn’t enjoy it at all to the extent that I wished I hadn’t had it. Now I’ve discovered the wonderful art, joy, hobby of snuff-taking I very much doubt I will ever smoke again.

When I stop smoking for a while, I lose my habituation to the taste of nicotine. If I start again, I don’t really taste the tobacco–the poisonous taste of the nicotine is all I can taste, like when I had my first cigarette. I have to smoke for a couple of days before they taste good, and why would I want to do that?

I’m the same way now. Every once in a while I’ll have a cigarette and wonder why I’ve been smoking them all these years. Oh right, it’s cuz I hadn’t heard of snuff til a couple years ago! They don’t taste very good, and that’s even a good brand. Not only that, they’re just not enough nicotine anymore and I still wanna snuff afterward. ;p I’ve never been excited about tobacco til snuff. Like Thunderbird said, it’s more of an art and hobby than a habit. Btw, F&T HDT is so good! I think it’s tied now with Viking Brown for my favorite. All I need now is a desert island and a few kilos of each. ;p

@Thunderbird Good for you dude - Keep on going  I’d be happy if I could only smoke when I wanted to, moving it out of the ‘everyday’ would be a massive thing for me. Still, reduction seems to be back on track so, with steady progess it’s more achievable. I’d like to be mostly snuff with the occasional pipe - That would be living the dream for me.

Cigarettes make me feel gross, even one or two will make me cough a lot the next day. Like once a year I might go and buy some rolling tobacco when I’m going to a party or something but it’s very very rare.

i still love a marlboro red :stuck_out_tongue:

I had a rollie and actually now I remember I had a Marlboro light too (or whatever it is they’re called nowadays). No desire to do it. Not one tiny bit. And this is from someone who had a serious smoking relapse from August last year till I started snuffing a couple of months ago. Amazing really.

I had a drag off a cigarette this past weekend and regretted it immediately. I couldn’t get rid of the taste for a very long time. Snuff is much more enjoyable.

My wife is fighting the habit. I’ve tried to get her to try snuff but she’s just not willing. I’ll have one every now and then just to remind myswlf how much i dislike them.

My pipes have been getting quite neglected. I often go to a nearby park on Saturday nights where some friends play music, it’s my once a week treat. Even then, I’m just as happy with my snuffbox. I don’t hate pipes at all. I just like snuff better. Once in a blue moon I roll a ciggie with some strong local tobacco I bought from the farm door in Lombok, but it’s so strong it feels more like a cigar. Factory made cigs are just bad tobacco.

@JakartaBoy. Baisically yes. That and, what ever they can pass as tobacco. Nat Shermans are o.k. though to me.

yes cigarettes aren’t tobacco they’re a tobacco product

yes cigarettes aren’t tobacco they’re a tobacco product

I’m not trying to be contrary here; but surely any tobacco that’s sold is a product, snuff included. Annoyingly I do still enjoy a cigarette (hence not quitting), this thing that gets me is that I smoke so many that I don’t enjoy. If I could take smoking out of the everyday then I think things would be different. Strangely I’m not concerned about the habitual snuff business in the slightest; just don’t see it in the same way.

I smoked since i was 17 years old and tried many times to quit but couldn’t. I started using snuff about 6 months ago and found that i enjoyed it more than smoking. Gradually i started smoking less up until last week when i last smoked. I’m really happy to have kicked the habit!

@snuffer thats awesome Mate! @wiscsnuffer‌ I’m in the same boat. Been 3 years since my last ciggie but the missus still smokes and wants to quit but doesn’t want to snuff. She’s worried about other people seeing brown stains on her nose which i occasionally have when i’m busy and have not been hygenic enough. Crazy though as i enjoy snuff more than smoking and i can do it for the rest of my life guilt free/no health issues just benifits. I’m going to keep pestering though.

@MisterPaul‌ You might want to research what goes into modern cigarettes. Most have less than 50% burley tobacco and the rest is filler (read cellulose = cardboard) and chemicals. That’s why they taste like shit!

@Bignose Well aware actually; but than for the thoughtful comment  I’ve never brought cheap cigarettes for that reason, I think that all smokers are aware that some brands/types are poor quality from the taste etc. when you accept them if offered by others socially - I’ve given my excuses and declined these to smoke my own for longer than I care to remember! I’ve smoked roll-ups for probably about 20 years now partly due to this. Though I do occasionally accept a Marlboro Red or a Lucky Strike if I’m offered it socially; pretty rare these days. I do buy the occasional carton of Sobranie Black or Gitane’s when I encounter them in the duty free at the port/airport [again this is very rare]. But, I save them to smoke them infrequently, kind of like a cigar I guess. It’s interesting to me that there is obviously awareness of your comments in the cigarette client base. Have you noticed the growth in organic type tobacco brands like American Spirit, even Drum in the UK now do a chemical free range. It’s an intriguing market shift: It makes me wonder if we’ll see more snuffs which are aimed at the organic/chemical free tobacco segment?

@BigNose your wife as a women should know she will probably be more clean about using snuff than you. Also American Spirit can go to hell. Freebase tobacco is in it.

@MisterPaul‌ I wasn’t sure if you new the composition of smokes these days, but your obviously savy and make smart choices in not buying the cheaper stuff. Re your last comment, i’m hopeful that most snuffs are fairly “chemical free” other than typical PH boosters, salt and the like that pose no real health risk. Certainly the main stream UK snuff makers seem to be and thats what i mostly use. Or am i mistaken?

@BigNose I’m not sure you know: I’m aware that niche manufacturers like SWS & Abraxas are big on the no additives etc. (Johnny especially). But I guessing that at the growing/farming stage of the tobacco cycle agricultural insecticides and herbicides are used as with other crops? [May be some of the manufacturers on the forum know more about this?]. Likewise snuff seems to keep very doesn’t it? I’m not sure is some companies use anti-fungal preparations or moisture enhancers or not [?]. Although this isn’t the same as bag of saltpetre, chemicals etc. cardboard, paper, fillers and other floor sweepings in cheap cigarettes it does make you wonder… I’ve never come across a snuff marketed as ‘organic’ though that’s not to say there aren’t any. I am surprised that there’s not more given that this seems to be a trend in tobacco products generally.
