When you are trying to explain snuff to someone new do you say that a snuff smells like, “XYZ” or do you say that it tastes like “XYZ”? I know this is kind of a silly question but I was trying to explain snuff to a co-worker and it was hard to define if it was a taste or a smell or both… I think of flavor or taste as more of an oral sense where smell or scent is obviously in the nose which is where your snuff goes. I don’t suppose there is a right or wrong answer for this and you both smell and taste the snuff but it got me thinking about how others explain it.
I look at it as a nasal scent so I go with scent or smell.
Interesting question. In the food business it’s said that “flavor is the intersection of taste and aroma”. That’s why food is boring when you can’t breathe because of a cold, or whatever. For the uninitiated I’d stick with aroma or smell when describing snuff.
Yeah smell is probably the easiest way to explain it a new person. I was describing it as a “flavor” but I think they got the point. Upon my own reflection of this question, it seems to me that some of them are far more a scent than taste. Natural tobaccos seem more of a smell or scent where “flavored” snuffs are a taste, but (for me anyway) I think this is just how my brain is making sense of it. Natural tobacco has that wood fire smell where something like Bernard Brasil makes me think of chocolate coffee cake so my brain thinks of it as a taste… Like I said I don’t suppose there is a right or wrong answer.
Both, although with the German counterparts.
Flavors and scents. tastes are choices, if your snuff smells get rid of it. You do get tastes with back drip but then again that is your choice. I go with scent or aroma.
Honey Bee is always a toss up to me. How many agree with me. This could become a discussion about many snuffs out for the nose or throght.

Most of the snuff I use I tend to smell it first. It may not smell good but once in the nose or throut may be a way different experience. " I will quote your words" “no snuff go’s to waist” Always IMO.
Great comment about subject! I think I will consider this every time some gos up my nose.
Like I said before I have to wonder if it isn’t just how your brain is making the connection. If the snuff has a “scent” like a food/drink you might be more inclined to say it “tastes” like something… That snuff really does taste like coffee or coconuts… But if it is something you are used to smelling more than tasting you might describe it as such… This snuff smells like a camp fire…
