Hi guys, I’m not new here, but I haven’t posted for a while because I have been pretty happy with what I’ve been snuffing, and I thought it was a done deal. I’m an occasional user, maybe a couple of times a week. I get most of my vitamin N from cigarettes, and only snuff here and there when I feel like it. That’s changed now, because I’m about to start a new job that doesn’t allow smoking anywhere in the vicinity of the workplace. I’m looking for a small snuff box to have about my person at all times, but I’m not having much luck. I’ve previously used a Red Bull tap-out container (dumped the snuff itself in the garbage!) but I never really became accustomed to snuffing off the back of my hand or my thumbnail. I prefer to pinch, but that’s unwieldy at best with a tap-out container. What I really want is a small box with a hinged lid, and the practical side of me is thinking that plastic is the most practical material. I like wooden and metal boxes, but I think that plastic’s light weight and lack of porosity will fit my needs best. I was delighted to find this thread: http://snuffhouse.org/discussion/5101/mr.-snuff-plastic-snuff-box I thought that this box would be ideal, until I saw the size I need something similar, but that has a capacity more in the 5-10g range. At the moment, I’m using one of the little blue J&H Wilson tins (I think they hold about 8g) so that will give some idea of the size I need. Unfortunately, I have to use an elastic band to keep it closed in my pocket, which is less than ideal. I tried smash boxes, but couldn’t get on with them, I really want a small, flat, rectangular box. So, does such a beast exist?
There are many such boxes around, but 99% of them are on ebay. Just search for them and have a look, the problem is you will more than likely come up against collectors who would like nothing more than to buy the box, look at it, and then put it in a cupboard with 200 identical boxes. I have a small wooden box, exactly as you describe that I got from a charity shop, and a plain silver one that I was given as a wedding present by my darling and very understanding wife (from SnuffStore). The price is a bit steep but the box is perfect. I think your best bet is probably to trawl through ebay until you find one you like, or look up Patrick Collins boxes, or Heartwood. Theres info on both of these all over this forum. Hope some of that helps!
I scoured ebay, but I couldn’t find anything useful. The problem is that there are lots of sellers on ebay who think that any small box is a ‘snuff box’. I don’t want to use (or pay for) an antique, and it seems that all of the modern made boxes are trinket/pill boxes, and would leak if used for snuff. Back in England, I used to own a store that sold alternative clothing. I used to buy little rosewood snuff type boxes from a supplier who imported stuff from India. They wouldn’t work as they came, but I think they could be modified to be snuff-tight. Trouble is, while they are ubiquitous in the UK, I can’t seem to find them here in the States. Well, I did actually find one on ebay, but it was something like $40. Considering I used to pay less than 1GBP (about a dollar fifty) for them, I just couldn’t bring myself to pay that much for one…
The Mahogany or Oak box from here should do you well… http://snuffgear.com/index.php?main\_page=index&cPath=3\_52 Patrick Collins is a member (@onefortheroad) here, but I’ve not seen him for a while. His boxes are well regarded, and mine travels with me every day.
While at snuffgear check out the smash boxes. The top one that holds 5g is probably perfect for your needs. If you have the money though, the wooden boxes are works of functional art.
Personally I’d recommend the teak triple tech. The design suits any style of snuff taking and teak, being resistant to water, seems to keep snuff fresh particularly well and also reduces the chance of any warping to the lid.
Regarding your issue with the size of the Mr. Snuff plastic flip-top boxes, let me just say that even though they “can” hold quite a large amount, I frequently load them up with just what I need to get me through the day and all the extra space actually comes in handy because I know that it’ll never spill out when I open the lid. Also, although they seem large, they’re smaller than most cell-phones and can easily be concealed (if that’s an issue). Just my $0.02
I second ermtonys suggestion on the Triple Tech, the best wooden snuff boxes money can buy imho. You can get them here: http://snuffgear.com/index.php?main\_page=index&cPath=3\_52
The small Heartwood boxes would probably be a good size for you. Approximate size is 2 inches long x 1.75 wide x 0.5 tall. Looks like Mr. Snuff only has the ones with the keychains attached in stock, but if that doesn’t suit you, Google “heartwood box” and you can probably find some other sources for them. https://mrsnuff.com/store/snuff-with-keychain-p-25.html?osCsid=63299669dd1a040404b915631cd4b52c
The Oak 5 Diamond is new for PC … not Triple Tech … but sure looks good. Hmmmm … wheels spinning.
I use emptied Wilsons or Toque 10g tins most of the time. Anything smaller is too hard to get my fingers in. Anything larger is, as you point out, cumbersome. Of course I encumber myself by having three or four on my person at any given time. :-/
@doctorbeat take a look at their Silver snuff boxes http://www.snuffstore.co.uk/silver-snuff-c-48\_80.html . I believe they are what you have in mind. In fact, I too do feel the same way in terms of box preference. However, i have yet to bring myself to purchase them yet as they are wayyyy too pricey for a tiny box. but well… they are quality silver boxes.
Yeah, one day I’ll buy a silver one… The reason I don’t want to use a large box for a small amount of snuff is that I don’t want the snuff to dry out too easily. I find that dry snuff makes me sneeze. I’m ok with ‘dry’ snuffs as they come, but once they lose the little moisture that they have, I seem to be unable to snuff them without them going too far into my nose. I’ve got a contact lens case that I’m going to try. If it will hold liquid, I imagine it will be fine for snuff, and it has a low enough capacity to keep a day’s worth fresh. I may have trouble fitting my man thumbs in there though, so we’ll see.
I’ve never really found a snuff box I liked apart from the one that came with some of the foulest snuff I’ve ever had to submit my nose to. It may not be pretty, but it’s perfect for 5-7 grams.
I would love to see a Robby’s style and size box for sale. I am sure I read on here that these were made by Poschl.
Robby’s Top Mint Snuff was made by Pöschl, licensed from Brumfit & Radford. Nowadays they only seem to make the “Radford Premium Snuff” in a tap box.
That Robby’s container is EXACTLY what I’m talking about! (apart from the color…) What a pity it’s discontinued.
@slartie: Also last year one simply called “Radford” was reintroduced. Its sold in 25g vacuum tins. I’ve not tried it yet.
I found a tin that is pretty much suitable, but not 100% perfect. It’s an Altoids Smalls tin, which is a reasonably small sized tin, though still a bit on the large side to hold only a day’s worth. I thought about this a while ago, but a test with talcum powder showed that it leaked too much. My little blue Wilson’s tin cracked in my pocket, and having nowhere else to put the snuff, I decided a leaky tin was better than no tin at all. It seems that talc must be considerably finer than WoS SP however, as the tin doesn’t seem to leak snuff, at least nowhere near the amount that it leaked with talc. I could only find one other reference to these small Altoids tins, so I thought I’d share. The other guy mentioned that he puts a piece of tape over the hinge on the inside of the tin, but I found this to be unnecessary, as that area is pretty much covered by the lid when the box is closed, certainly I couldn’t get any snuff to leak out of this area by shaking the tin. So, the good news is that it is cheap and holds snuff, the bad news is that it’s probably not airtight and holds too much for a day’s worth. The quest continues, but I have something to use while I’m looking. I have a ‘box within a box’ idea, I’ll Post my results if it’s a success.
An Altoids tin works fairly well for me too. I don’t really lug things with me all day, so I only have to worry about it leaking on the 1/2 mile commute to my office. I’m not sure what’s available in different areas, but I got ahold of an X-it mint tin and it’s pretty awesome. It has an inner lid that you can remove to fill, and a little hole to get the mints out. It really puts a stop to the leakage and functions fairly well as a tap box.
