I can’t smoke at work, and I have a sinus infection, so while I usually snuff my way through the day, I needed something that doesn’t go up my nose. The local 7/11 didn’t have snus, so I bought a can of skoal long cut cherry. I put a smallish (for snus) sized pinch under my upper lip as if I was taking snus, and less than a minute later, I got an enormous nic hit and felt like I was going to vomit or pass out or both. I felt slightly queasy for an hour afterwards. I am certain that I swallowed no juice, as I put it under my upper lip like snus. What happened? Is chewing tobacco just exceptionally strong? Snus has never come close to doing this to me…
They are very different and as you found out you produce a large amount of saliva, unlike snus, which is very rich in the nicotine content. You can’t help swallowing some juice, or ‘gutting’ it as some call it. Build up from small pinches and don’t keep them in too long. Or get some antibiotics.
Tip: if skoal was that strong, you might want to stear clear of Grizzly. But even still, I’ve tried dipping in my upper lip, but it still produces alot of saliva compared to snus. Start with a very small pinch. Then if you are feeling cocky you can work your way up to a horseshoe, lol.
That’s the thing though- there was no excess saliva. It was in my upper lip like a portion of loose snus, and it didn’t make me salivate any more than usual. In fact, although it is cherry flavor, I couldn’t taste anything because it was under my upper lip. I guess it’s just bloody strong stuff and I should use a much smaller pinch. I had read that you’re supposed to use a quarter-sized amount, so I thought I was playing it safe!
You might find something like Redman chew suits you better; it has a drier texture and not as much saliva through using it, its also easier and less messy to mould into portions.
I make some 15 portions out of a 34g tin, which is around 2g a pinch
I tried snaller pinches (appleseed size) and they were ok, so I guess I just have to be very careful! I can’t believe how potent this stuff is. Those people who do horseshoes must have an enormous tolerance to nicotine. @snuffster, I just reread your first reply, what did you mean by ‘or get some antibiotics?’
I think he was refering to your infection so you can go back to snuff.
*smacks forehead* Can’t believe I missed that
Thank you Harlequin.
Well the dip isn’t stronger but it aborbs faster. That’s my take on it. Snus is pretty slow on the uptake as far as nicotine absorbtion goes.
Sounds to me like just an odd occurance, your tolerance was down for some odd reason and idk, it slammed you. Skoal does not have as high nic level as cope or griz. I find that when you do any type of tobacco that you have not done in a long time, you get a stronger hit, which is why every so often i get a tin and take a break fromsnuff for a week.
I’ve had quite a bit of chew/dip and the only time I was sent into a cold sweat and sick feeling was when I tried a sample of Skoal Cherry from a tobacco festival. Maybe being a small sample, it was high powered? I don’t know.
Juice is the main reason that I don’t really use dip. if I’m working in the yard, the spitting is kind of fun. If I’m in my office, it’s a damn nuisance. I’m so happy that Skoal is expanding the flavors of SNUS available. The cherry one will be the first one I try.
