I have lately found a new mainstay in Six Photo MG (Monika Grover) Madras snuff. For me the scent is just a touch of burnt tobacco which likely comes from the process of frying the tobacco in ghee. It has the effect of actually seeming like I’ve just taken a drag off a cigarette by the scent left in the nose. I use snuff to help me quit smoking and this really fits the bill in a way no other snuff has. I originally ordered the thimble and am halfway through and have already placed an order for the 100g tin. This would place in my top 5 or 6 snuffs (Six, get it?). If you’re thinking about it, get a thimble or two, they’re reasonably priced. You can always get more later.

V

6P MG Madras is one of the strongest snuffs I have ever tried.

In terms of nicotine delivery I find it on a par with Toque USA Whiskey & Honey, V2 Thunder, Taxi Red and Icelandic Neftobak.

S

I agree with all of the above. For me, it has been the best Indian snuff so far- also being very easy on the nose (even in large pinches).

P

Yeah I think I might be Sixphoto’s MG Madras biggest fan . Haven’t tried it in the little pot because I tend to always prefer the bigger pots of sixphoto . I would buy this in bigger sizes again too .

Think I’m on my third 100 grammer now, love the stuff , stores well , tendency to lump up a little bit in the fridge, snuffs easily .

I don’t find it quite as turbo-charged in nicotine as many other users . However I do find it endowed with minor alkaloids. Find it very satisfying.

I was looking to get a pound of the  stuff but the price went right up recently so I’m hanging out for free shipping or something

P

Still an awesome snuff , surprised it isn’t getting more regard from our plain tobacco enthusiasts .

I just love the stuff . Been snusing for a while for health reasons  but as soon as I had a bit of nose power  I was straight back on the MG . :)

V

Hi @Pikey! There are quite a few MG fans aboard. Most of them just don’t frequent the  “Nose” thread, and this dedicated one sank. I went through a few boxes of small tubs and one 100 grammer. A true pleasure!

T

Count me in!

One of my favourites and I dont frequent the nose thread too…just lazy

B-)

P

Heya bud . Yeah I’ve been cyberstalking your posts this avo Already got 100 G of that Janta brand madras on order to have a looksee .

A

@Pikey how is the janta Dragon madras?

P

@ALLex . My tub came a little drier than I’d like . I’ve got tins of MG in storage that have barely changed since launch day . They seemed packed in similar ways but mine was clearly drier than intended . Nowt wrong with the scent and the tobacco though . I’ll just add a couple of drops of food grade oil  before I have a proper session with it .

J

@Pikey where did you ordered? I just received email from snuffstore that its coming to me… Can’t wait to try it, hope it won’t be stale

A

@Pikey @Johano me too i ve ordered it and i would probably have it in my mailbox this Friday!

Excited to try this snuff, its my first madras snuff.

P

No chance of the snuff being stale lads , it’s a new product and not been on the shelves long enough .

I did find it a touch drier than I’d like though . One of the joys of MG Madras is it’s a strong snuff that is easy to snort . So that’s why I’m wanting to oil the Dragon Madras up a bit before having a blast .

A

MG madras is instant satisfaction but very short lived. The nature of the beast I suppose. Or maybe I don’t snuff enough at once because I feel satisfied after the first couple micro-pinches

V

@ar47, try packing your nose with MG like you would with a schmalzler in a Bavarian snuff taking contest. Well, maybe half of that amount, actually… Large pinches leaves me content for fairly long time.

@Pikey, the Dragon is indeed drier than MG, but it isn’t that dry as it seems. It never hit my throat, going through the freebie thimble. Interested to know, do you find it a tad sourish, too?

A

@volunge what is this thimble??

V

@ar47, small plastic 8 g tub

V

@sixphoto, any plans to supply mrsnuff/snuffstore with M.G. Madras in 35 g tins? I noticed this size is available in Russia, but it’s too complicated to order from Alexey. This would be the size of my choice, if it were stocked at MrS/SS.

Six Photo MG Madras 35 g tin

S

Mg Madras is packed only in 2 sizes 6g and 100 g . There is no plan to add another size anytime soon , since we have our hands full at the moment.  The same packing is supplied to Russia as well.

V

@sixphoto, Thanks for the reply. I got an impression Alexey re-packages some snuffs by himself, but wasn’t sure.

B

Just bought a 100g tin MG Madras, wondering if i have to store it in the fridge, anyone know?

Would likely take 2-3 months for me to finish it.

A

@Bryceton certainly not necessary from my experience

N

I remember fondly about a time approx three years back when @Gokul and I used to interact most about snuff. He was the one to let me know about Madras snuffs in general. Since then I had procured and used a few Madras snuffs like NB Madras and SVS Madras but their availability was an issue. I was also a newbie and favored snuffs with pronounced fragrance over plain snuffs. Over a period of time my preference just reversed.

This is one of my all day every day snuffs and I have more than 300 grams stocked away in glass jars just in case the tins give up keeping it fresh. Was glad to keep in touch with Vikas @sixphoto over the development of this snuff and being a small part of his experiment and development cycle. Was truly humbled! I intend to never run out of this snuff.

S

May I ask: who is Monika Grover?  She must be pretty important to have earned her place on such a lovely snuff. I’ve done some searching but nothing stands out particularly.

T

I think she is Vikas’ boss…

V

Quite a few guys believe that M. G. is a Bollywood star ;). The inscription “INDIA STAR” gave them a “hint”, I suppose.

S

Silly me, googling when I should have been searching snuffhouse!  Per Vikas himself here:

“This MG snuff has been named in appreciation of  MONIKA GROVER , my wife for 23 years.”

The only Madras type snuff I have tried is Janta Dragon Madras.
How does 6photo MG Madras compare to it?
If anyone have tried them both I would love to read a comparison of the two.

Peace

V

Noteworthy, neither of them is produced in Chenai, and are rather different from the genuine Madras snuffs a good bunch of which I had a chance to try. However, both are rather nice, different takes on the genre, therefore worth trying.

Just a word of warning, 6P Madras (in my experience) is more susceptible to degradation (drop in potency) in longer term – my last tin was disappointingly different from those ordered previously. The disappointing quality (potency drop) I can only explain by snuff age: I have noticed that it ran out of stock next day after I placed an order, and re-stocking took some time; so, it’s safe to assume that the last tin I received wasn’t of the “first freshness”, and I just had way better luck with those previously ordered ones). However, in all fairness, I wasn’t sure if the difference was merely down to snuff age (could be explained by the inevitable decomposition of ammonium carbonate in longer term, especially paired with calcium hydroxide) or rather due to batch variations (or even changed formula), and was just leaning towards the former explanation (for the sake of hope, solely, because I really enjoyed all my previously procured tins, large and thimbles, and dreaded to think that the manufacturer might have tweaked the recipe).

The most up-front difference between 6P and Janta Madras snuffs is tobacco. India Star Monika Grover Madras contains some fired component. I cannot say for sure if it’s actual Latakia (as claimed on manufacturer’s site – “Staying true to the age old tradition of Madras snuff industry this snuff is prepared by roasting the special blend of strong south Indian Burley and Latakia tobaccos”; for what it’s worth, tin label just states “Sun Cured Country Tobacco”) or not, but there’s a hint of smokiness a sweet character of which does resemble that of Lat, whereas Dragon Madras does not contain any fired component and is made from rustica (it actually feels stronger than M.G.). M. G. looks just a tad darker than D. M.

And one last thing to note - M. G. Madras does not contain actual dairy ghee (confirmed by the manufacturer).

T

Mg Madras is a darker tobacco and a bit easier to take. More cigarish and rich with also a buttery smooth tinge. You feel a distinct pulse in the nose from the nicotine probably also from the slaked lime. At first the smell threw me off but after adjusting it’s a fantastic snuff and I wish I had got the bigger 100g tin haha. Dragon is a bit harsher and more like a cigarette tobacco style ashiness, and I’d dare say a tad bit stronger, but they both are on the list of top strongest Snuffs out there. Both are unlike any Snuffs I’ve had before but these are the only madras I’ve tried. Hope this helps some! I may try to do a video review of it soon before I run out

Thanks a lot @towhee89 ! If you do a video review, please share it here with us or the name of your youtube channel. Cheers

Old photo, posted on some other thread some years ago. One of the first batches of Six Photo MG Madras, super fresh (bottom layer) vs WoS Irish No. 22 (top layer):

Six-Photo-Madras-vs-Wo-S-Irish-No-22

Enjoyed a mix of them (1:1) - MG#22. Back then this Madras was my daily staple, but I haven’t replenished in a timely manner and was running low on it. Luckily, I had plenty of Irish - plain goodness on its own, just way less potent than Madras which I was craving for. So, to make parting with the latter less frustrating and rollback to weaker snuff smoother and more pleasing, I came up with an idea of blending the remaining MG with a toast for a smoother rollback. Made a small tester first and took a picture before shaking (which is, by the way, most effective way of mixing snuffs). Eye-catching contrast, isn’t it?

Towhee Tobacco Reviews - YouTube It is here, cheers

A

@volunge that’s a very nice pic. and 2 great snuffs!! I would like to get a tin of MG Madras in the future but I am not planning on rushing to order it.

A

@towhee89 Thanks mate, I am wishing you the best for your youtube channel.

D

They are both very interesting to say the least. To me, I always seem to get a fleeting capsicum note (of a green, sweet pepper, type) with the Dragon Madras, which I think is certainly quite unique.

I do not have any of the MG Madras on hand right now, but this reminds me to add a small tub of it to my next order!

T

Yeah I notice that too, there’s also a grassiness I’ve been picking up. The barnyard has not been too bad on it but when I first opened it tasted like poo in the nose. Also you’re right on the spice or pepper, it’s almost as if there’s a bit of a capsaicin feel in the nose. Some Snuffs I could have sworn had cayenne pepper in them. I can’t remember if it was Garrett scotch or what but the Indians have something similar too. I saw a review on YT of MG Madras he said he hated it because of the poo smell!! I mean it took some getting used to that’s for sure but once the nose adjusts the strength is amazing which is why I’d get it again. With the Dragon Madras - It’s like I notice it in some parts of the can bit others not but it has gotten a lot less maybe it’s aired out more. I got the can before it was sold out but I think it’s fresh enough. I dunno I don’t really like them for flavors, I prefer English or German for that, and American for the bbq smoke! Well that’s a generalization of course but the strength is a main appeal with the Indians. I actually think the Janta Rustica Standard is one of the best tasting Indians I’ve ever tried thus far but I haven’t tried many Dholakia sans Sparrow to compare to, but have used a good amount of JNF and 6P.

M

I’ve had many different Madras snuffs over the years. Most of them I liked, but I don’t remember the names, only the colors or graphic on the tins. Without exception, they were all light to medium brown, and had a similar scent. Probably due to the type of tobacco and the “fried in ghee” aspect. The 6 Photo MG Madras is different in several respects: the dark brown tobacco and frying, toasting, or more precisely in this case, almost burnt scent, are the things that separate this one from the rest of the pack. It’s good. It’s very easy to take. I’m used to it now, and although I rotate it in with lots of other snuffs, I like it a lot.
