Hey all . Well the last 3 days or so I have had realy bad sinus pressure now my question is could late night snuffing befor I sleep be the cause of this ??? I had sinus problems when I smoked but this is the first time with snuff is all the snuff sat their all night in my nose be the problem ??? Any ideas ? Hope u are all well and have a fantastic weekend
Pluss to add I don’t need to blow my nose much when I snuff anymore is this normal ??
I’m certainly no expert, Dave, but I use saline nasal spray before going to bed and wake up with a clear nose. As far as your nose blowing is concerned, I think each snuffer has his/her own system, depending largely on the grind of the snuff. Good luck, in any case!
Ah ok thanks for your help I tried the neti pot today wow was that weird
Sleep on your stomach maybe? I always take a pinch of some type of menthol before sleep and had no real problem other than slight draining. (Confuscious say man who go to bed with a full nose, wake up with a brown pillow)
Lol thanks bob I’m just about to go to sleep instead of my usual snuff I’ll try medicated 99 and see what happens thanks bob
I’ve not gotten one single sinus infection since starting to use snuff. However when I first started I did get what you’re talking about. Doesn’t happen anymore I don’t know if that because of my improved snuffing skills or if my body is more acclimated to snuff. I also get clogged less and sneeze a lot less. I really think that after a while you’re body acts less allergic to snuff and almost expects it to be there.
No sinus infections here. The only snuffs that have a negative effect on me are the Poeschl menthols. I don’t think it’s the menthol as much as the wax they put in there.
Once the histamine system is triggered, for whatever initial cause, even things that ordinarily don’t cause a reaction, will. Infection is usually a result of blockage, and severe sinus pain is more indicative of blockage than infection. If it’s allergy (with clear discharge), use an anti-histamine, if purulent, avoid anti-histamines and consider OTC quaifenesin and chicken soup instead. Caveat, viral sinus infection discharge is also clear, (but you will usually have constitutional symptoms (fatigue, chills, fever, aches)). Other allergies, mold, dust, etc. than snuff may have started the issue, but it doesn’t matter now, any foreign bodies (i.e. snuff) you put in your nose other than salt water is likely to aggravate. Saline irrigation should definitely help in every case, and laying off a couple days is a good idea. If you’re having a lot of sinus pain, no more than five days of vasoconstrictive nasal spray (like Afrin) could give some immediate relief. Those, and menthol, cause rebound. Insert disclaimers. With all due respect to success, Poschl must have been a quack. I don’t know what mechanism of paraffin would cause the intense allergic reactions I have when I use their snuff straight, but whatever’s in it, I too find positively noxious.
Wow thanks guys very interesting stuff .herzl hmmm you know what ? I have been working on turning a damp d garage into an office space now when I say damp even the wood wah rotten I think that maybe it !!! Bigblue well buddy I feel amazing I can breath so much better . I can smell wow man I can smell evrything . I can taste food again and enjoy my food . I can go for long long walks withought stopping for a rest , I wake up in the morning feeling refreshed , I can go out all night and do amature radio without the worry of running out of cigs . I’m more relaxed and chilled out as a person . I think better react better . Bloody hell I have never put it down how much better I feel using snuff instead of cigs and its shocked me even reading it now that’s amazing and I guess bigblue looking at the above even if it was the snuff which I’m now sure it is not . It would be a small price to pay to have all the benifits above !
snuff can certainly aggravate allergic reactions. The thing is for me I’ve noticed it doesn’t just make them worse it also makes them go away much faster. Like it compresses them. There are certain molds and old lady perfumes (not much diffrence in my opinion) which used to make me feel sneezy and headachy all day now I get 15 minutes of violent sneezing eye watering and headache that is constant but once over it’s over.
In my own case, snuff (esp. the Scotch snuffs) are the only real help I’ve yet found for my intense nasal allergies.
@cstokes4: When I first got some Poschl Raspberry and Packards club, there was a strong chemical taste to them that was cloying. I put them both away for a few months and now they’re MUCH better. I can really taste the tobacco, particularly in the Raspberry, and really enjoy both much more now than when they were ‘new’.
I had a sinus infection last year. Really made snuffing unenjoyable. My regular snuffs were uncomfortable to say the least. I started to worry that my snuff or snuffbox was contaminated. I tried some medicated 99 before bed one night. FIRE! I pulled out the neti pot soon after to get relief from the medicated. The sinus infection soon subsided on its own and life was good again. Hope you’re feeling better davec32. I wouldn’t be surprised at all if it was the damp/musty/moldy garage that caused your problem.
yeah medicated snuff I know saved me from a sinus infection it hurt but it worked. just to be gross I’ll put it this way the whole begining of the infection just slipped out my nose.
thanks for all your help here guys i may give the medicated a go again , first time made me sneeze and sneeze and sneeze and nose ran like a tap , i have also just orderd lots of air cleaners Prem-i-air AP1620 Air Cleaner & Purifier air filter ,so il have nice air in the house and garage … its not as bad today but has moments when its very very painfull esp when bending over now that hurts , the doc tor gave me Metronidazole …in the usa i think its called Flagyl i dont like taking atibiotics so will hold of taking that for a few days i like to think the body can learn to fight without the aid of antibiotics that the doctors seem to hand out left right and center nower days thanks again guys
(I was doing a search on it and this thread came up. And the info is pretty informative.) I’m sorry if my post is long. I have a few questions of my own for discussion so I thought I’ll do it here instead of opening a new thread. After being a victim of the clogged nose society my self, from using snuff. And after reading a lot on here about menthol’s being the culprit for many. I finally decided since I now have what to try it with I should go a head and do it. So I am doing an experiment on my self to see if menthol is the reason of my nose clogging to the point where you just start thinking is this worth it. But I think I have a few other things that I need to look in to as well. So first I decided on using Bernard Basil only (for now)since that one I was told is non menthol? I have to admit, It is a much different experience in general. Since it dose not give me the menthol burn, and maybe the texture also has to do with it. I don’t know why, but for some reason I always end up with much more snuff in my hand when I shake it out of the box it comes in. And I don’t hold back from just shoving it all up. Since I can’t put it back. But I do know it smells great and it makes you want more. And I’m thinking that might be a problem? It defiantly dose not clog me in general during the day, maybe the other way around. But at the end of the day, after work, I do find that if I lay down, even just to rest a little. I start feeling clogged. I’m thinking if the air conditioner is part of the Problem. Cleaning the filter wouldn’t hurt. I’m not sure what it is, but I did snuff Bernard schwalzer before laying down and felt the clog. Monday & Tuesday mornings I woke up very clogged and felt like I had a sinus infection. Wasn’t sure if it my seasonal allergies which are mostly under control. I take a Zerytec every night. So I yesterday decided to spray in some saline spray and it help only a little. So I decided to take a few light pinches of the medicated .99 and I have to say it relived me a lot. So the bottom line it helped me but on the other hand if you go crazy with it it will probably clog me. I’m wondering if my clogging at night had anything to do with it. After all, if you don’t spray you will have something there. Especially with the few schmalzer I got, it shoots all the way down my throat. I would rather think it should happen to the more dry ones. Strange. The question is why is it called medicated? dose it really have medicinal additives? sorry again, for writing so much.
I would Follow the doctors instructions exactly when it comes to medication. If you choose not to, inform your doctor you don’t want to. However more importantly when you start the medication ( if you choose to at all ) finish all the medication as directed exactly… or the organisms ( the ones living inside your face ) can actually build a restistance to the medication and become immune to that specific antibiotic The Only way to tell if the snuff or your living arrangements are to blame for the problem is to take a break from snuffs and see how you feel. It could be a problem with a specific snuff instead of all the snuffs. Or like you’re hoping it could be environmental and or unrelated.
I find medicated 99 helps clear congestion at the end of a cold. But medicated snuffs in general can give rebound congestion at other times.
I wanted to add No one including myself can tell you anything worth while until you use complete abstinence as a control for our little experiment. I would keep your nose clear until you feel 100% better for a couple of days. Once you return to normal for a couple days of no use ( the extra couple days of no use is to make sure the infection doesn’t return through environmental or non snuff related reasons. ) Try a single type of snuff you enjoy… If you still feel fine after a day or two of snuff use with that specific one then try another kind the next day. Repeat this with different kinds of snuffs until you feel sick or never get sick at all. If you never get sick using this method chances are it was a freak accident and unrelated to snuff. If you get an infection right away after you start snuffing chances are that snuff in general is causing your distress. And lastly if you get a reoccurrence of an infection after using a specific brand with no problems prior chances are that your problem stems from a specific snuff and not across the board. However if your problem persists please listen to your doctor and if you don’t want to its not fair to the doctor not to let them know. Transparency makes the doctors job much easier.
