Silver snuff box

wow that’s nice. I think I saw one just like it on ebay for $1000.00 I’d love a nice silver box but the ones I like always go for way too much money, though there was one I should have bid on that went for $130 on ebay. For $100 I want something really nice, but really nice seems to cost over $200.

You should be able to buy one of the Walsh brothers boxes and get it shipped to you for about £120 or so I would have thought. They really are worth it and are beautiful pieces of work - I sound like I am one of their salesmen! Thats a great box, Steverino and I agree, these things were meant to be used, If its a tight fit you will find silver the ideal metal for keeping your snuff nice. It would also polish up really well, although I like the old look of silver with the slight tarnish

Take a stroll through some antique stores or pawn shops. Sometimes you can find little treasures that have been there hiding for a long time that they might cut a deal on. There are quite a few nice silver pill boxes out there that will make great snuff boxes as well. Also some silver cigarette cases can be used for snuff.

Yeah antique stores rock you can find so much cool shit at them.

I was looking around EBay under pill boxes & found this little treasure. It was under pill boxes but is obviously a pewter snuff box. Its stamped on the bottom Fribourg &Treyer. Its a little more than I would want to pay for it but thought someone here might be interested. Looks like a nice little box. F&T Snuff Box

Very interesting. One of the online stores (think its Greens of Leeds) sells these at present. As F and T is defunct someone must have got hold of the original dies

Well I’m sure that F&T had those old boxes made for them by some outside company. Possibly being the same company making the new ones. Maybe the same company that made the old G. Smiths & Sons pewter boxes. I have seen a few other F&T old boxes come through the auction. I prefer old snuff boxes to new ones. For the fact that someone else has used & enjoyed it and I like to think of the history the snuff box has been through. There’s just something nostalgic about them.

F and T certainly had them made by another company, probably in Sheffield where a lot of the pewter/silver ware in England was and is made. I think the stamp on this box - ‘Fribourg and Treyer, London’ refers to where F and T were as opposed to where the box was made. I love the old boxes too; relics of a more elegant age

Here is something that someone might be interested in using for a snuff box? They are new from the Czech Military for use with medical so I’m sure they fit pretty tight. Czech Military Boxes

I mentioned on this post earlier I would like a gold snuff box. Just found a nice example but a little out of my price. I bet it would feel good in the hands though. 18k Gold Snuff Box

18k is nice, but little too soft I’d think. If I wasn’t saving $$$ for an AR-15, I might consider placing a bid. It does look sharp.

I guess 18K would have the same tactile strength of pewter, which Ive always found a bit too soft. Not that I’d turn my nose up at this baby though! Maybe if there’s a rich old lady out there in search of a 43 year old toyboy?..

18K gold is still pretty strong. 18K jewelry like rings and such do hold up pretty well and they get a lot more abuse than a snuff box would. Granted 14K or even 10K would be a lot better for pocket use. But I wouldn’t want to use anything more pure than 18 unless it sat on a desk. But I don’t think I would carry this one around either. I would probably use it as a desk top snuff box. You would feel pretty sick in the stomach if you lost that one!

I hate to say this, but these days I snuff from a silver box made as an advertisment for the good ship Titanic…and yes I paid a horrible price for it when I got it, but it was worth it.

Next time I go to mexico for my dental work I’ll check out the local silver smiths. I see some notable workmanship in mexican silver, including abalone inlays and semi-precious stones. Wonder what it would cost…

I have a mexican silver snuff box with an abalone lid. Its pretty nice work on it. There are also some Indians in your neck of the woods stitch that do some good silver work.

Here is a pic of my new little gem. Found it hiding on Ebay. It was brand new in box. Its sterling silver & weighs 32.8 grams. Lid opens and closes with a snap & seems to seal very tight. With shipping, paid $25. Here is a link to the manufacturers website. If you look under “smoking accessories” there are a few snuff boxes. There are also some listed under their pill boxes. That thing looks slick. Nice purchase, man! Especially for that price.

Classy box.

Satyr, if your interested in another silver box, this ebay store has a few nice ones. Just make sure to check measurements on them. Like the 8th down on the left and the 7th down on the right. Nice Silver Boxes
