Silly noobie question regarding storage

I’ve searched for this, but haven’t found much info.  What is the best way to store snuff that you may not get to for, let’s say, 3-6 months?  I just ordered about 300 grams of snuff, none of it is packaged bulk.  They are all in 35g tins or smaller.  I might not get to some of these for a few months.

The good Mr. Nachman told me that he stores most of his in a gallon ziploc baggie, then puts that bag in the freezer.  Is this best for all snuffs?

Your advice is always appreciated!

@WWhermit…this was posted recently here. I store all my snuff in baby food jars. Works great. Putting your snuffs together in their store bought cans in a ziploc is how I ruined my collection…the freezer may have slowed the damage but the scents mingled and ruined it all.

I keep my “stock in use” in three airtight storage jars - each with a small humidifier*.
One jar for SP / plain / the “earthy” Sam Gawith sorts;
One jar for subtle aromas (GH Western Glory, Snuff Store Golden Pinch, Wilsons’ Rose and the like);
One jar for anything stronger/medicated.

Any “Bulk” or longer-term storage is in sealed boxes (again, separated into “families”) in the refrigerator.

* “humidifier” is a small, clean glass pill jar, 1-2mm hole in lid, small, sterile surgical swab inside, moistened with a little pure spring water.  Maintains humidity perfectly for snuff in tap-boxes and the like.  Even the F&T blends, in their excellent sealed tubes, keep for longer at a lower temperature - ask Wilsons - they’ve been making snuff longer than anyone!

unsealed or poorly sealed containers are a pain - in an earlier thread on here I described an ounce or two of Wilsons’ Best SP I bought loose (in a plastic smoking baccy pouch) and popped into the 'fridge - when opened a few weeks later, I had SP with aromas of good cured ham and smoked mackerel fillet!

I’ve been smoking pipe tobacco for a few years now, and have a respectable cellar, so I understand the value and importance of properly storing tobacco.  I didn’t realize that snuff can keep for years with no sufferage of quality, just like pipe tobacco.

Now, from what I’ve read from thorgrimnr’s link, baby food jars seal well enough to keep snuff good for long term storage.  Right now the most I have of one snuff is about 75 grams.  I have tons of mason jars from cellaring pipe tobacco, so I can use that for bigger quantities, and the baby food jars for smaller stuff.

The 5 and 10 gram tins, for sampling, those should be good on their own as long as they are "grouped into their own classes’, such as menthols, fruities, toasts, schmalzers, and such?  Maybe a cigar box for each?

Final question.  Cool, dark place for long term storage or freezer?  Which would be better?

I use a series of mason jars and amber bottles. If I have 25 gram tin that I won’t go through quickly I transerfer it to a bottle. I store the bottles in cigar boxes. Bulk goes into the mason jars 16 oz, 8 oz and 4 oz… I fill 2 oz amber bottles from the 4 oz mason jars. I fill my snuff box from the bottles.

Ermtony describes a three stage storage system on his web site that I basically adopted. I just added another step or two. Probably overkill…

Whatever I am storing I just keep in a cool, dark place.

Keep it airtight and it will stay in perfect condition.

I use lots of tupperware, seems to do the trick.

Try the crisper in your refrigerator.

Well, I’m pretty good at pipe tobacco storage, so it seems I have to apply the same logic and method here.  I’ve got the wifey buying baby food to mix with her oatmeal in the morning, and I can then use the jars to seal up the snuff.

I have quite a few of those little 5g tins of different snuffs.  Apparently those are samplers!  I’ll have to use them up and see if I like them enough to buy in bulk, just like pipe tobacco.  Then seal those properly.

It’s good to hear that snuff will last forever if properly stored.  Not good news for the wifey.  Just another slope for me to slide down.

I end up with lots of tins sitting around on my desk, I figured those Viking and SG tins are pretty air tight that I dont have to worry much, but the snuff I don’t use at least every other day I keep in an air tight plastic container.
This is the exact container I got but I don’t remember if this is where I bought it from

A lot of people use mason jars.

Where I’m from, a mason (glass) jar is the most proper thing to serve iced tea in!  They are very versatile and could conceivably last a life time. Well worth the money. I don’t even worry about them being clear, as long as they aren’t storing snuff  on a shelf sitting in direct sunlight. I like checking out the different shades of snuff I have on the wall.
