@fbones24 I know she posted that she got one that recently, and I’m not jumping her answer, but the guy who makes them has an account here and on Etsy. He even made some youtube videos for us to show the boxes were snuff-tight. If someone remembers the member or the thread, please post it here.

@fbones24 I got it off Ebay… Seller “ThrexProject”. I think it was supposed to be more as a pill box, but its made of metal, brass and resin with a strong magnet closure. So far nothing has seeped out, not one grain of snuff. Its a nice box. There’s an old thread around here somewhere about the guy who makes them… Perhaps @basement_shaman can fill me in again about the thread?

@linguist I think @basement_shaman was making a tongue in cheek comment about the green spot design looking like one of those optical illusions that makes it appear the design is moving

Antique Italian snuff box made of horn (late '800 - early '900) and bone snuff spoon from Australia (Georgian era).

T

These are my snuff cabinet drawers - the first one is the bottom drawer one holds UK snuffs, and above it are some bagged Indian snuffs and some snuff boxes. The second one is the top drawer, which has European, African & Indian snuffs, with my US Scotches above it. They usually sit on top of the cabinet.

X

@toffeenose Those Suns Snuff baggies look familiar What’s the M&W underneath the lower W&W, and due west of the bag of tonka beans? cool to see “Smith’s Mix” as a label on top of an SG container. Snuffstore Golden Pinch is also one I hadn’t seen.

T

Yes @Xander, I’m sure they do! Thanks for sending them, they’re still just as good & fresh as the day I got 'em! The Smith’s Mix label is on top of an SG Kendal Brown label - I don’t think there’s very much of a difference either. The M&W’s are Mature Crumbled and Jock’s Choice. The Golden Pinch is amazing - I don’t think that they still carry it now the store is under new management.

Great news. The Doc says not to worry! I quote “You obviously don’t use that portion of your brain anyway… you won’t miss it.” It’s snowing on a very slow (understatement) Thursday here. So I cleaned one of these bad boys up. Inside too. Waiting for the overseas orders now to see how these work. photo medical-boxes_zps90c542e5-1.jpg

I’ve never bought a snuff box. I use 5g smash boxes that mrsnuff sells. I will later this year buy some proper snuff boxes though. What is their capacity and can you use them with for example SG’s moist coarse snuffs likeScotch Black? Thanks

M

I can’t afford the nice ones yet but these are 10 for $1.00

My actual little collection of bakelite snuff boxes (1920-1960)

J

Very nice. I have a light green and white coloured box like your bi-coloured one above. Mine looks to be hand-made - do you know anything about the history of yours?

O

No Justin, about my bakelite snuff boxes unfortunately i know very little. The 2 brown are English, the bi-coloured is French, the green has written in Cyrillic but I do not know exactly where it came from (perhaps Bulgaria) and the 2 black are German, one from Poschl and one from Bernard. About this last i know that they have made few and there are even less in circulation. I know something more about my snuff boxes made of natural materials (papier mache, bone, horn, wood, etc.). Why do you not post a picture of your bi-coloured snuff box? Personally i’m very curious to see the snuff boxes of forum members!

As requested, here it is. One photo with a standard brown bakelite box next to it for scale, and an attempt at a closeup. Apologies if the images are a bit large!

T

I have plastic smash boxes, but the wood La Jurassienne box is rose wood, and the hallmarked silver box under it has a gold wash on the inside. the top round one stage left, is pewter, the two cylinders are Ti

T

Here is a better picture of the rose wood La Jurassienne box, I sealed it with bees wax, which helped a fair amount keeping the snuff moist.

O

@Justin I confirm, it appears to be identical to mine, very nice!

J

@OldBigWagon and @Justin did you see I have one of those too?

O

@Juxtaposer the brown bakelite? Yes, I believe that this is very handy for its size and compactness to carry snuff out of house, in fact this is one of the most frequently used by me alternating with those made of plastic form Mr. snuff.

O

Snuff box for religious… “Tu ne turas point” that means “Do not kill”. Great advice I would say!

_

These I just got yesterday at Walmart in the travel section by toothpastes, the little bins( more storage than snuffboxes… But real handy for cheap snuffbox… They screw on the top , real slick with no crevasses on the inside… 2 in a pack for 97 cents ( ( cheap and in seven colors )) called IGO TRAVEL JARS… Looks like really made for cosmetics

_

Forgot to add when screwed on …AIRTIGHT

S

I think they’re cool. Gravity defying snuffboxes!

M

No wonder they were cheap, all the snuff falls out when you open them.

B

yeah I like the plastic jars I have they seem to keep snuff pretty well.

Thank you @stogie!

Welcome @Rabelo!

J

Did you know that there is still permafrost on the big island from the last ice age? This gives the island around thirteen of the sixteen or so climate zones that this entire planet has. Not too worried about the next ice age though, being closer to the equator than most humans. When the sea level drops you guys can come on over and stay on the beaches which will then be much larger. A silver snuff box is still outside of my budget but one of these days I’m going to splurge, maybe for my 50th in a couple of years.

_

@Mouse…the snuff never falls out of them…the inside of the top cover is level with the rim of the top…I actually unscrew them when driving and pinch out of them… Maybe my pics are bad…

@OldBigWagon. Nice vintage snuffbox, like how you displayed it. Nice Desk drawers ( tiger o:k? ) desk blotter nice as well… Looks like a Christies or Sotheby’s display…advance to you sir…do I hear $£???

A

Bought this 1oz flask at walmart for $2. I just filed down the keychain eyelet, abs it’s good to go.

3

@apvonkanel that’s a nice little flask where did you find in Walmart, I would like to pick one up

A

They were by the “as seen on tv” section by the cash registers. Every Walmart I’ve seen from Texas to Colorado also has a local souvenir section, with spoons, shot glasses, keychains, and flasks for the local state. There are full sized flasks (which are useless to me as I’m not a drinker), but the 1oz flasks are great. I’ll probably pick up another one just because they’re so cheap and handy.

B

I need to get me a flask soon.

3

@apvonkanel thanks, I’ll take a look,

My whole snuffbox collection. Recently finished home made wooden, along with golf tee snuff spoon I made fooling around it had been bouncing around my desk all winter reminding me that I couldn’t play golf so I finally carved it up and my favorite plastic box along with 1 of my many tins.

A

Scored this beauty on eBay. Just came in, and now for the real test and see how it holds up for a day.

Hamlet, what I believe you have there is part of a WWII medics kit. The top trough is filled with water and needles (for injections) are put in. The alcohol “lamp” is then lit and the water boils sterilizing the needle.

You are absolutely correct sir! I have since received a few Toque flasks so the med kits will remain display items honoring history and the sacrifice of those before us. Thank you for the insight.

S

Am massively excited - this lovely thing is being posted to me tomorrow from Germany: I think it looks beautiful. Nice and small, for everyday use when out and about.

M

Nice snuff box, @snuffski!

O

I like the look of that one snuffski.I really want to start collecting some snuffboxes and have been cruising ebay quite a bit.Unfortunately I seem to have quite expensive tastes as everything I like seems to go for a pretty penny.

S

Thanks guys. It is handmade in Germany by a really nice, helpful guy. You can pay by bank transfer (only 4 quid to send the 36 euro it costs, so not too outrageously expensive to pay that way, and safer than sending cash). www.drechselshop-online.de

T

Wow, that’s beautiful, @Snuffski!

S

I can’t claim credit for discovering the range - I came across it in another thread whilst trawling the site (I only joined here yesterday!).

3

That’s funny, I remembered seeing those snuff boxes on another thread and was just trying to relocate it last night. that’s a beautiful snuff box

S

Am getting very concerned for the welfare of my beautiful snuffbox - it seems to have gotten lost somewhere over the north sea, and has yet to turn up at my door…

5

My two Patrick Collins double snuffboxes arrived this morning … I really need to get some piccies taken

_

Am getting very concerned for the welfare of my beautiful snuffbox - it seems to have gotten lost somewhere over the north sea, and has yet to turn up at my door…

@snuffski…I am interpreting that, as you left it on a airplane…

S

@AANYCAARDS - Haha, no - I haven’t received it yet to be able to leave it anywhere. It has to cross the north sea somehow, presumably by plane, in order to get to me by post - hence my reference. To be fair, I’m not used to receiving things from Germany so I have no firm idea how long it should take, but would have expected no more than a week to ten days. The maker is a seemingly very nice, helpful guy, so I have little doubt he’ll see me right if it doesn’t turn up, but I just want my lovely snuff box! Tins are ok, but it would be nice to able to take something with style out and about for my daily pinches. It’s nice to be waiting for something so cool, but quite irritating to come home every day and find it still hasn’t arrived. Fingers crossed for the morning!

S

Well, still haven’t got what I’m really waiting for, but I did finally get another little box I’ve been waiting for - a silver one. It has a tight-fitting, pop-off lid. It doesn’t come open accidentally and seems ideal for the pocket, though it will get a little bashed and worn, but I’m cool with that - it’s for use, not for display (and in any case, I actually got it free - long story…). Here it is (with apologies for the poor quality photos): Seems to be doing the job quite well, and I think the lid is plenty snug enough to keep the contents fresh for a while.

B

@snuffski Very Nice! How many grams would you say it holds?

S

Thanks. I would suggest probably 4g or thereabouts.

S

Splendid news, comrades! My excellent little box/tin from Germany has arrived today, and I am truly delighted with it. It is lovely quality and looks like it’s going to do the job brilliantly. I get the distinct impression that the incredibly hard wood will not absorb, and I also think it’s been oiled or something during the making to keep moisture in (it’s specifically designed for snuff/tobacco usage). It was worth the wait: Again, sorry for the slightly inadequate picture quality. Nonetheless, a big thank you to Heinz of http://www.drechselshop-online.de for this great accessory, and the nice, personal service. In a while I may order one of the deeper boxes he offers, depending on how long the snuff turns out to keep fresh. The size I have, however, is more than ideal for daily use, is better for the pocket than metal (owing to the fact that wood doesn’t conduct heat from the body as fast and won’t dent). When I was first getting back into snuffing, I wanted in my mind to have something exactly along the lines of this box - and now I have it! I’m like the woman who was run over by a train - chuffed to bits!

E

Nice catch! I have three of his boxes, all great and eminently fit for purpose.

3

Sweet, almost too pretty to use, how tall is that with the lid on

S

@3_D - it’s a couple of cm high. Don’t have a ruler at home but that’s roughly right I would say. @ermtony - cool, was it you I picked up the tip from a little while back perhaps? If so, thanks for putting me onto him - really excellent selection of stuff for our purposes, and beautifully made. Not 100% perfectly shaped (very, very slight inconsistence but none where it matters such as the seals) but that just adds to the charm to me. Out of interest, which country are you in and how long did your boxes take to arrive? As mentioned earlier I was seriously concerned this week that it was lost somewhere without hope - took just over two weeks to reach me, which is a long time for Germany to the UK.

J

What does the bottom look like?

S

The bottom side is just slightly-rounded, plain black ebony. Same shape as the top side.

E

@snuffski Not sure if you picked up on those from me but I did post here when I got them. I didn’t get them direct but second hand from a member here who is in Belgium - part of a snuff/box swap deal. Quite some time ago and I can’t remember how long they took to arrive. I’m in Hull, England.

S

@ermtony - Ah, I see. I was pretty astonished when I got the package to see that it had been sent DHL ‘Priority’ and was sent even before my payment had reached the maker, which was incredibly trusting and kind of him. Nonetheless, it still took well over two weeks to come from Germany! If that’s DHL’s interpretation of ‘priority’ then I’d hate to experience their standard shipping! Nonetheless, can’t speak highly enough of the maker, Heinz Niessen - great comms and very approachable. Will definitely get another at some point - he has some really lovely other designs.

E

DHL are normally much better than that. I regularly ship large parcels by DHL to a distributor in the US and they always seem to get them fast enough. I reckon your experience is an exception and nothing to give concern for future orders. Almost a shame that the maker’s surname has a double s. With a single s it would be a great name for a snuff box maker! dict.cc/german-english/niesen.html

S

Here’s the current snuffski collection of boxes (not including the multitude of glass jars and other more ordinary tins - here are the only ones I take anywhere): I have another wooden one on order from Germany, this time a slightly larger one. The thing impressing me about the wooden one I already have, aside from it’s lovely looks and quality, is the fact that it’s keeping things nice and fresh for days on end. So, I figure a 20g one will be no problem.

B

Here is my current collection. As you can see, I like silver boxes. It is a bit of an indulgence of mine. All were had for reasonable prices - if you are patient, there are good deals out there! The large table top snuffer in the middle is my latest acquisition. It is considerable in terms of size - takes a large tin of WoS without complaining! Hallmarked for mid-19th century. The box in the bottom right corner is my day to day snuffbox, and travels with me wherever I go. It is hallmarked for the early 1970s, and has been much loved by its previous owner which I surmise must have been a real snuffer, not a collector. Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

S

Hurrah! An unexpectedly quick delivery from Germany of another handmade snuff box, this time a slightly larger model which can take about 20 grams (probably a bit less if not tamped down). It’s made of ebony and pepperwood (it’s the one on the right!). Thanks again to Heinz from drechselshop-online.de for the fast and personal service.

B

Here are some of my ever growing collection , there are a few missing.from left to right assorted vials ,some paper mache ,some bernard boxes, china enamel, wooden slide heart boxes, raku bottles, various bullets, brass cylinders, small cauldron, rococo boxes,snuffhouse.org boxes, sterling silver boxes, pewter and lead lined flip tops, some bottles, flip tops of composite, horn, wood and turtle and french flip tops

A

@basement_shaman You could have one heck of an Ebay store with all of your hardware

X

@Allen I think he’s the reason I can never seem to win one of those French flip top boxes on ebay. :-w

@basement_shaman nice collection of silver boxes you got there

O

Love that collection Basment Shaman…Some real nice boxes for sure.

O

Im having issues posting up a pic.I picked up a nice silver box over the weekend at a flea market.I was told by the gentleman I purchased it from it was for jewelry but it holds about 50 grams of snuff very nicely, great tabletop type box.

O

Lets try this one more time

O

Hahaha finally figured it out. This box was looking very sad, ingood shape but it was just tarnished to heck but I fixed that with some silver cleaner. Not bad for 5 bucks :-B

M

nice find @outlawmobile!

O

Thanks…it seems to keep the snuff pretty well, have had some Ralphs Scotch in it all week which I hydrated a bit amd it doesnt seem to have dried out at all.

F

Wow, I’m a little bit jealous! so many nice snuff boxes!

B

Two more to add to my collection

J

@basement_shaman Very nice. Is that a Patrick Collins box on the left?

B

@Justin no it’s a heart box it is actually nicer than the one I ordered. the pewter box was made By F&T

E

the pewter box was made By F&T

Actually I believe they were made for them rather than by them. Many such pewter boxes were made by several firms in Sheffield (among others elsewhere) and I have seen them badged for Wilson’s and Smith’s as well as F&T. I have several in my collection.

Z

Just picked up this nice little Spanish silver snuff box crab.

Z

Underneath is pretty detailed too.

B

One that was tucked away in my pipe tobacco tin cellar. It is silver plated pewter with a gold wash inside. Has seen plenty of use and still works great.

W

This is my assortment of Patrick Collins boxes. They are quite the combo of art and function. When it is hot and humid I tend to go with the plastic Mr. Snuff boxes because the wood ones will swell shut if I get all sweaty at work.

M

Thanks, willc. I’ve got 6 PC boxes was thinking I overdid it but now I feel I need a few more:-)

W

@Mouse another box and you can have one for each day of the week!

Z

Here is a photo of my very first snuffbox: . Not sure of any provenance or even if it is all that old (sold as “vintage”) but it works as a great way to carry that HDT around without having a that can in the pocket.

_

My first and only snuff box …soviet union is faintly still scratched inside top cover Real nice burl wood and amazingly well crafted.

T

Hi every one, I have a burl wood box, just like the one pictured, but I always thought of it as a cigarette box, so what do you all think. It is a nice box never the less, and of course one could keep snuff in it. I never tried putting cigarettes in the box to see if they would fit.

B

@tboyer it rare but I seen them in sets- cigarette/ business card holder. and the smaller ones for matches and or snuff. the hinges usually get warped with moisture and crack. Beautiful wood and difficult to work with. Personally I could not carry this unless It had it’s own bag.

Almost bid on that same box. At least it looks exactly like it. Nice

L

i saw these boxes at antique store. Seller says they ere for cigarettes. Size was like 9*10 cm

B

Finally got my hand on a Bakelite snuff box and it is in great condition

T

@baement_shaman: nice! I picked up its identical twin a while back on ebay. They are good little boxes.

B

Old paper mache snuff box with turtle on top

B

Pewter snuff box to add to the ever growing collection

J

This was an eBay win last night. I used a sniping service and got caught up in the crossfire. I mean, I got pushed to my very maximum bid, 21.63 pounds, or around $35. I was hoping to get it for about half that, but you gotta go with what your real comfort limit is. If it works as a good snuff box, then I don’t think I over-paid too much. I like the look of it, I haven’t got my hands on it yet.

E

@JakartaBoy I’ve got a couple which are very similar. They are solid and practical and usually the pewter has enough give in it that it can be bent a little to improve the closure if need be.

J

@ermtony, yours are also by G.Smith and Sons? I know that the shop operated from late 19th century until a few years ago, I wonder when they made snuff boxes like this?

E

@JakartaBoy Smith’s didn’t actually make the boxes - they were usually produced by Dixon’s in Sheffield, long a centre of whitesmithing as well as snuff. In fact several of my ancestors were whitesmiths in Sheffield in the mid 19th century. The boxes were marked for the shop that would be selling them. An advertising thing I reckon. I also have boxes marked for Fribourg & Treyer.

Ah, okay. So a bit like buying a little flask with “Toque” engraved on it? Anyway, I can’t wait to see if it works well. I’m kind of hoping it works as a good, practical, solid box that can carried and used everywhere. From what you say, it has potential. I ask without reaching for google: A whitesmith is specifically someone who works with pewter? Now I’ve googled. Yes, wikipedia says this: A whitesmith is a person who works with “white” or light-coloured metals such as tin and pewter.

V

Hello, does anyone know the year in which it was made? http://www.ebay.de/itm/Kleines-Flaschchen-Poschl-Schmalzler-Schnupftabak/320800867317

B

Two more Bakelite boxes- the one on the left need TLC but the right one is tight just have to remove the brass coat of arms, the left one the lift is broke off so I think I glue a small coin in place and add some epoxy to the sides of lid and carefully file it to fit.The labor involved is worth more than the box,but it’s a part of history I will preserve.

F

leave the arms! i would, Matlock Bath being a place. would be a shame to go about ‘preserving history’ by removing the history of the box.

J

leave the arms! i would, Matlock Bath being a place. would be a shame to go about ‘preserving history’ by removing the history of the box.

Ha. I thought exactly the same thing. Why remove the arms, unless they are the coat of arms of a clan which is a blood enemy of the noble Basement Shaman clan of ancient lineage?

X

Yeah, but the second box looks like its a clone of the first with the badge just stuck on with adhesive by a previous owner, not that I can really tell from here though.

T

I agree, it looks like it was added. It does not look like it was part of it when it was made.

V

Hello, does anyone know the year in which it was made? http://www.ebay.de/itm/Kleines-Flaschchen-Poschl-Schmalzler-Schnupftabak/320800867317

No one knows?

X

@Viertel not specifically. There are many such bottles just like that one. Anywhere from 1950-1990 would be my guess.

F

@xander but it was in there and is part of its history. besides, all shaman’s bakelites look like clones.

F

It looks like a profile of Bert from Sesame street.

B

Yes ,they came from the same owner, since they are exact, the COA was glued on probably to distinguish what snuff was in what box.The plain box will get a coin glue on for a lid lift to replace the broken lid lift.As for the COA; boxes are conversation pieces,I have no history with Matlock Bath. And I will not fabricate stories as it’s against my morals.

W

I like flasks and tap boxes better than pinch boxes, really. I’ve had my eye out for a good flask on eBay. I just bought this one, advertised as “antique vintage” German, no dates or other information:

B

edit

B

A metal snuff bottle and a heart wooden box to feed my addiction

B

Got this flask from Toque a few weeks back. Absolutely love it. Filled it with Toque Quit and it is now my key holder, can’t leave home without snuff. I know, it’s not a snuff box

I got a whole bunch of one oz flasks a while back, but never came across one that was half as good as the Toque flask. The others were made by the same maker and had the same size top, but the Toque flask is the only one with round edges. With the others, it’s always hard to get the last few pinches out of the flask. @basement_shaman, what’s the story with the metal bottle in the post above? It’s not one of the titanium bottles Mister Snuff was selling a while back, is it?

B

@JakartaBoy got it at M.S. it heavy duty and stainless steel works great. Currently it’s filled with Willie Pete You can find it here: https://mistersnuff.com/catalog/stainless-steel-snuff-bottle-p-3213.html?osCsid=055b2367674249bb4a6ca224b0f04aec

J

@basement_shaman, I really like the look of that metal bottle. I think the bottom unscrews, yes? That would overcome the minor hassle of filling up a flask, which is the only thing I don’t like about them. In the meantime, I snagged two wood boxes at a reasonably good Buy it Now price on eBay, 20 quid for the both of them. Not really sure about old wood boxes, but from the pictures and my exchange with the vendor, it sounds like they have potential. I’m not convinced that the “ebonized wood” is in fact ebonized wood, it could be papier mache and accidentally misidentified, from the look of it. I’ve never really looked at a papier mache box – not even really sure what it is – but it looks very similar. 0E9s37E2e7BSCOHfkvSQ~~60_1.JPG)

seeing all these beautiful boxes and bottles makes me crave one so much. shame im living on about £10 a week currently, and even thats uncertain.

I’m a low, uncertain income earner myself. I’m going to sell an IMP meerschaum that I never use to finance this round of purchases. I also don’t have children or a wife, so I guess I devote more of my resources to my own frivolous desires than anyone else’s frivolous desires. Maybe one day I’ll regret the lack of grandchildren, surrounded on my own by a small collection of snuff boxes. I’ll have to move somewhere where I can keep a dog.

J

@JakartaBoy Nice boxes. I think you’re right about the black box - it looks like papier mache to me too.

T

My new papier mache box inlaid with mother of pearl. And a little pich of Black Rapee.

J

Not strictly a snuff BOX, but a nice flask. Another cheap buy, at only $13 from eBay. Haven’t taken possession yet, these are the vendors photos. It was described as a “ladies [sic] flask”, about 2.5 inches by 2 inches.

B

Got a set of Pewter boxes by EDWIN BLYDE EST 1798 SHEFFIELD the large box is way too big for snuff or to carry in pocket, still a nice addition for my addiction >:)

G

I am drooling at all the gorgeous snuff boxes that you all have. I used to have a La Jurasienne with the metal lip and ends that my first wife swiped…lil bugger! I got it at the beachside mall in Biloxi Ms when stationed there in the air force in 73’ missed it ever since. paid about $20 for it then. out of business now I think. What I use alot any more is those CAMEL snuff pouch containers, the new ones, they cost $4 with 15 pouches and then I have a nice snuff box after words. Timberwolf pouches come with a nice top that flips open to hold used pouches that work great for snuff. You can carry two types that way. They cost about $1.29 here in missouri. My wife bought me a nice chinese snuff bottle for my birthday in sept. I will post it here. THIS THING IS ABSOLUTELY HUGE…heavy too. I think it would hold approx 3 cannisters of W.E. Garrett sweet, not kidding. I will post photos of it alongside some of my other snuff containers. If you can, try getting some of those 1 oz flasks like a hip flask only tiny with screw off lid I posted some photos of them in earlier posts. Paid 50cents each for them at a yard sale, bought 11 of em…hehehe

G

I forgot to mention that we paid a dollar recently at Dollar tree for what is supposed to be a ‘ear spoon’ my wife uses it to scrape out my ears…I know, wierd. They are pretty hard plastic, about 3 in long and scoop out a generous portion of snuff for putting on back of hand…nice, 2 for a buck…cant beat that. But I still like my rose bush twig snuff spoons, just cut off at an angle, scoop out the pith center a bit and it works fine…rustic, yet functional.

F

im more likely to use it for chew/snus as its so big, and only table use, but-

R

Quick pic of my two snuff boxes for anyone that is interested. On the right a 19 century horn snuff box given to me about 30 yrs ago by an ,antique dealer, mate. On the left my cheapest of cheap, snuff carrier…a camera lens filter case.Nice size for small daily use, closes very air tight and secure.

V

I got it for my birthday from my lovely girlfriend I love her so much <3 Handmade snuffbox made of horn, filled with SG Guarana and three handkerchiefs

F

my pair. how do i do little images?

V

@Firestarter0 if you want to do little images, do not use any html, just click “Attach a file” below and upload it directly from your computer.

J

@Firestarter0, the one at the bottom is a pretty little box!

F

yeah, its great condition, i have a thread for the horn snuffbox that includes more images of both. its only faults are the little bits of wax in the hinge and under the lip of the lid- my fault.

V

They arrived today

B

my latest a metal ,a wood and a plastic

J

@basement_shaman is the wooden box on the left one of the ones where the lid swivels and is held in place with small magnets? If so, how is it working for you so far?

B

@Justin no it a slide box. Don’t think I will get one of those swivel boxes .

J

@basement_shaman, the metal one is one of the titanium flasks from Mr Snuff? How do you find it?

N

.

F

@nikolaus where is that rectangular one from? it looks nice. and i do love those snus cans. must get one.

N

www.icetool.com http://us.northerner.com/accessories-int/icetool-int/icetool-snus-cans-int.html the portion cans have caoutchouc rings that seems to be airtight when you close it. the Icetool cans for loose tobacco it doesn’t use rings at all, but it also seems to keep fresh the tobacco, (i own both types. For snuff i Highly recommend the portion cans)

B

@JakartaBoy works well with dry snuff this is the Stainless Steel bottle.2nd in my collection. I destroy snuff boxes, these are indestructible. I have sparrow in one and I just filled the other with swastika snuff. The snuffhouse.org boxes fit perfectly in a zippo lighter holster and I carry on my belt

B

Latest Wilson of Sharrow box. When will I have enough? :-?

N

I just receive that 3 handmade from Germany, great materials and construction

C

Bought this 1oz flask at walmart for $2. I just filed down the keychain eyelet, abs it’s good to go.

Sweet! What section of walmart? Location? Many thanks.

M

@basement_shaman is the wooden box on the left one of the ones where the lid swivels and is held in place with small magnets? If so, how is it working for you so far?

I’ve got one of the swivel/magnet type boxes. It is almost as tight as a slidebox, almost… And I wouldn’t trust it in my pocket. I use mine as a table box with Dragun innit, works well for that.

I

@chefdaniel the place where they keychains/curios/trading cards are kept in Walmart is usually near the cashier aisle that doles out the tobacco products in the front of the store.

Z

Ok here is my latest. It was handmade by a friend of mine from a moose hoof. The lid is made from moose antler. I told him an idea I had about making one and he showed up this afternoon and gave me this. The pointed end of the hoof is filled and the entire inside has been sealed.

H

@Zimobog that is super frickin’ cool, I really need to get some proper boxes the empty 10g Wilsons tins lack pizzazz, though they’re very effective (well the ~35% of them that have a good seal are).

V

New one from Dholakia and general view over collection. But I keep my stoneware snuffboxes somewhere else due to lack of place.

I

That is a lot of snuff @Viertel. Well to me as a new snuff user it seems to be a lot. How much do you think you use on average a day?

V

@Igglet it depends on my mood and snuff. If it is Elmo’s I’m able to snuff 6-7 grams a day, but a decent daily dose is around 2-4g, I think.

I

I think I’m only up too 1/2 a gram a day but, before snuff I wasn’t really a big smoker. Like 3 or 4 cigs a day. I can never find time to smoke really. Always busy.

V

I have never been smoking. I started from snuff, but I don’t mind one cigarette from time to time though.

I

I wish I had found snuff first. Although in U.S.A. it seems no one knows what it is or, some how thinks it’s more dangerous than smoking. I think America needs a snuff movement! No more hiding! Snuff everywhere! In the churches, in the library, in your moms house, and even in the White House! Snuff damn you little minions! SNUFF!

Nasal snuff is uncommon in the states, but San Francisco has so many types of people it is not unknown. I was introduced to snuff by an old priest from England in 1983 (it was SG black rappee) Most of the time it’s people telling me it’s what an old relative use to do (the people being from Europe, Tibet, and the American South)

my latest a metal ,a wood and a plastic

@basement_shaman: I finally got one of the stainless steel bottles. Beautiful to look at, well made, yes. But really, way too small to become a regular user. Also, the opening at the top is pretty small, much smaller than the Toque flasks and too small to get a spoon in. I get around that by just opening it at the base. I’m just about to go to the mall to do a bit of shopping, it will probably contain enough for that, but I certainly wouldn’t take it as my only box when I’m out and about all day.

Yes, the snuff bottle and the opening needs to be bigger, Often I use the coarse ground snuff, such as SG black rappee

H

Just got this from Germany. Its very functional, the brass lock up is flawless and the box has lovely looks to it. ![](http://cdn.vanillaforums.com/snuffhouse.vanillaforums.com/FileUpload/aa/6801113442d811980310b33f18dc0b.png) But there is a but here, no pun intended. The wood of the lid is called "pfeffeholz"(pepperwood?) and if you use a non scented snuff the odor of this wood will infect your snuff. It happened to me with dholakia white and made the weird DW scent completely disappear only leaving a faint smell from the wood. The scent of the wood reminds me of the pencils at childrens school and I guess they where made from the same type of wood. To me its the smell of boredom and chewing pencils, not a good smell memory. Ill try to let some DW sit in there for some days and see what happens, but i suspect the smell from the wood will win the battle as I found DWs natural scent to be quite fragile. It easily take on scents from its surroundings. Regarding the other types of woods he is using I dont think there is a problem, the bottom part is made from cocobolo and is scentless.

H

FYI Just got this confirmed by the maker.

B

@JakartaBoy -Yes the SS Bottle is only good for fine dry snuff. They are virtually indestructible. I have pondered the idea of the titanium bottle but it will have to wait. I carry way too much snuff and have back ups close at hand.I have narrowed my selection to 8 boxes ,bottles, flasks, etc when out and about.

S

My favorite snuff box is a small screw top container from morrisons, I’ve used the small plastic mr snuff ones, a larger Bernard plastic one, along with various Samuel Gawith tins. All work well, but the morrisons container keeps snuff better than all the above.

C

Nice little rustic antique snuff box from France, I’m guessing these may have been sold as souvenirs to visitors of Besançon. Stamped on the edge of the lid is “La Bisontine.”

D

Fubar snafu plain in there. My daily.

S

That’s a good looking box Darth, does it keep snuff fresh?

D

@stanthony23‌ It has so far! I was surprised at how tightly the lid fits, it can be tricky to slide back on if you take it right off! I’d imagine it’s not 100% airtight though, so I’ll just have to finish it faster

I’ll get a McChrystals one after Christmas and fill it with just enough snuff for daily use.

B

@DarthMarklar I use paragon pipe wax on all my wooden snuff boxes. I coat the entire box then let them sit for a day or two and wipe them with a soft cloth they seen to keep the snuff fresh for quite some time. and the lids slide just fine. It is kind of expensive but a little goes a long way. The pipes I have only coated them once and after several year just a slight buffing with a soft cloth bring up the shine.

N

Came in the mail today!

Thanks for the advice @basement_shaman‌ !

S

These two copper ones. It seems to be a set, the small one for snuff and the larger for chewing or pipe tobacco. I don’t know if copper influences the taste, I have them only few days.

B

@Salmiak I would wax the insides after polishing and washing them out. The patina on copper can’t be good for you.

S

@basement_shaman We thought of that… I Remembered playing trumpet for years as a kid with daily copper on my mouth. Never suffered a thing. Just the idea of using chemical wax keeps me back a little. that would surely influence snuff which still is a food product to me. The boxes were made to snuff from, and as long as I don’t leave the snuff in it for a year I rely on a good ending

B

@Salmiak Why would you use chemical wax ? Beeswax is a natural product. Do what you like it is your health. CuSO4.5H20 is only slightly toxic

this looks so good but the price is insane are there any replicas of those old boxes ?

If you specifically want an enamel one then you will probably be out of luck. I’m not 100% certain the one shown is actually a snuff box - it doesn’t look as though it would be snuff proof, even assuming the lid stayed in place - and although you can get modern enamel boxes they wouldn’t work well for snuff for the same reason. However, if you keep your eye on ebay then you should be able to pick up a pewter, papier mache or wooden one for reasonable money. Have a look at these: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/ANTIQUE-JAMES-FURNISS-SHEFFILED-ENGLISH-PEWTER-PILL-PATCH-POCKET-SNUFF-BOX-OVAL-/151576487023 http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/FINE-CORNISH-PEWTER-SNUFFBOX-ENGLISH-HUNTING-SCENE-JAMES-DIXON-SONS-c1930-/151577221388 http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/antique-wooden-snuff-box-with-silver-bands-and-a-silver-cartouche-LA-Stl-LUCE-/321658138045 http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Victorian-Lacquered-Papier-Mache-Snuff-Box-with-Abalone-Inlaid-Decoration-/251821462455?pt=UK\\_Antiques\\_Other\\_RL&hash=item3aa1ba93b7 I have one with a plain top that is very similar to the second box above - the James Dixon one - and it is excellent.

B

Nice little rustic antique snuff box from France, I’m guessing these may have been sold as souvenirs to visitors of Besançon. Stamped on the edge of the lid is “La Bisontine.”

@cpmcdill I had heard these were to carry the Holy communion host to the sick & elderly shut ins. Thus the Monstrance symbol on the lid and the church name stamped on the lift section. Others I seen of the same era were snuff boxes I have a couple with the church names on them.

C

@basement_shaman - This one’s pretty small, with an opening not much more than an inch wide by about 2 1/2 inches long. The communion wafers I remember from my Catholic childhood seemed to be from 1 1/2 to 2 inches diameter, so a little box like this could only fit very tiny wafers or broken up ones. If I understand correctly, La Bisontine means woman from Besançon, and I could find no church of that name. However, I speculate it might have been the name of a shop, possibly next to a church or other pilgrimage site, thus they may have sold the boxes as souvenirs to pilgrims. Presently it’s the name of a brand of spring water, so maybe the spring was the pilgrimage site. I have another box of nearly identical construction, but just slightly smaller and with a shamrock inlay. No place of origin stamped on it.

F

Here are some of my ever growing collection , there are a few missing.from left to right assorted vials ,some paper mache ,some bernard boxes, china enamel, wooden slide heart boxes, raku bottles, various bullets, brass cylinders, small cauldron, rococo boxes,snuffhouse.org boxes, sterling silver boxes, pewter and lead lined flip tops, some bottles, flip tops of composite, horn, wood and turtle and french flip tops

@basement_shaman: That oriental one toward the bottom with the naked lady spoon… Classy in a kitschy sort of way. Definitely unique.

B

@fool Yea, the thing you can buy with money.I suspect it is worth more today with it’s antique value

S

Not my snuffbox, but a museumpice that belonged to our King Lodewijk Napoleon (1806-1814). An enthusiastic snufftaker like his brother.

R

how long is snuff supposed to stay in your nose ? i took few little spoons and it just got hard in my nose (i read somewhere that its supposed to dissolve inside your nose ) and in other place that you should blow it out in couple of minutes ? btw my nose was not running at all it felt dry

B

@RedDevil Snuff does not dissolve ,whatever you’re comfortable with. I am a more than average snuff user , If I need too; I will blow it out. Mostly it is just when I shower the nose is emptied totally. You should start a new thread rather than posting in a non related thread to get more opinions.

R

yeah sorry for that… i was trying to find something about it in forum but did not find anything . for now i will go with metal candy box i think it will work till i get something better

B

@RedDevil Patrick Collins makes some nice wooden boxes. check them out when you’re ready to buy. http://woodensnuffbox.com/ I see his websight is down curently. He make the tripletech snuff box. Single and double use boxes also.

I will probobly only use dry snuff so i was wandering around the net and found this place they seem to have 21 pages of snuff boxes the price varies from 10 dollars to like thousands i want to ask if anyone bought anything from there ? https://www.etsy.com/se-en/search?q=snuff+box&page=1 i found something i kinda like but there seems to be some red velvet stuff on top can i remove it without opening a leakage in the box and this age “Vintage item from the 1950s” is there any way to check ? https://www.etsy.com/se-en/listing/179705800/vintage-celluloid-woman-cameo-pill?ref=sr\\_gallery\\_39&ga\\_search\\_query=snuff+box&ga\\_page=2&ga\\_search\\_type=all&ga\\_view\\_type=gallery

L

RedDevil, please consider: - The Box has hairline crack - The box was made for sweets and is lined with velvet - The Box has a 3Barrelled Hinge, may clog (pillbox) - How airtight is it? I would consider it far too expensive For use as a snuffbox. Patrick B. Ludwig

I

I think the box has been ruined @RedDevil. Who lines a expensive box with trashy velvet? What purpose does that even serve? Maybe hold ear rings in it. Pretty expensive just to hold jewelry. I guess if you took the velvet out you could put toasts in it. With the velvet it would just make brown velvet.

B

I never buy any silver items without seeing the Hallmarks

R

thanks i was thinking about getting it cus i like the picture on the front the things bothering me were velvet and price never though about hallmark or hinge, air tightness

For humidifying and aging, I’ve been keeping open containers of homemade snuff in a de-scented (with soap, water, baking soda, and fresh air and sun) medium-sized Rubbermaid type box, box lid on, snuff lids off, with a little digital combo hygrometer and thermometer, and terra cotta shards (from old, broken plant pots) that are rinsed thoroughly, soaked, and then dried with a towel. Keeps the relative humidity around 80%, which is okay for short-term humidifying. 70% is a safer RH for longer-term aging (less risk of mold).

The shards are a very inexpensive, low-tech way of adding moisture for humidity. You could also use Boveda packs (72%RH) or make your own sugar-salt jars with small mason jars and Tyvek, which is what I do for puer tea storage. In fact, I did have some snuff batches stored with tea, but I was concerned about the tea picking up tobacco odors.

For carrying snuff around, I use these inexpensive 15ml plastic vials from Amazon which hold about 3-5g of snuff depending on the grind and whether you pack it in.

What they lack in beauty they make up for in function. They’ve got an o-ring to keep moisture in (or out) and fit into pockets really easily, about the same size as a AAA flashlight. Perfect for tapping out a serving of snuff and using the “boxcar” method.
