Shall I still use my old snuff?

I started using snuff again today. I bought a fresh tin of McChrystal’s, but I just found about 5 tins of fribourg & treyer snuffs. They are dry, is there a way I can sort this out? Flavour is maybe not as strong. I heard you can add a little water when they dry out like this? They are about 1 year old, lucky the “high dry toast” still seems fresh!

I would just use it as is.

Its very easy to re-hydrate by just adding a small amount of water to the container and leaving it for a day or so, you will lose some of the original flavour though. For small amounts I put a couple of pieces of peeled apple in the jar and leave, it gives some moisture back and deals with the flavour loss.

If you want to make sure that you don’t add anything to your snuff that might affect the flavor (such as chlorine) add DISTILLED WATER.

Just a few drops and then give it a shake. If it’s still too dry, add a few more drops after several hours (I prefer to let it reabsorb the water for at least a day.) You don’t want overhydrate your snuff!

Moistened tonquin beans work wonders to old, dried out snuff.

@howdydave
You can also use boiled water, cooled down to room temperature.

Thankyou for everyones advice :smiley:

I would be careful about leaving the piece of apple in the jar for too long, as you run the risk of getting some mold growth.

I tried using apple to liven up some dried Redman and I couldnt really tell a difference moisture wise or flavor. I also used orange peel to about the same effect, at least with the orange peel I got to enjoy some oranges. :slight_smile:

NO!!! Don’t use it… send it to me.  I have the proper receptacle for disposal.  I do what I can to help out.   :smiley:

You leave the apple in for a day or two - that will be safe enough, mould really is uncommon in snuff.

Boiling water is no good, quite the opposite it concentrates the ‘mineral’ deposits. If you can collect and condense the steam, then you have distilled water.

@Pot Poe

The traces of minerals that can be found in tap water will not alter the snuff in any way. On the contrary, chlorine will evaporate quickly. You can leave tap water in an open glass overnight and the chlorine smell will be gone. If you boil the water you can get rid of it in 10 minutes, plus you’re making sure to kill any bacteria.

If, at the end of the process, you can’t smell any odor from the water, it’s probably good to rehydrate snuff with.

I’ve never noticed any chlorine smell when just added straight from the tap.

I’m going to try the apple method on a few dried out old tins. I find tap water leaves a strange and unpleasant after smell, so I’m not using that method any longer. Might try orange peel too.

@KebAMP

I dun’no…

If you are rehydrating your snuff, you do it in a closed container. Closed containers prevent any evaporation. As for trace minerals in the water… I had a friend who had a lot of sulfer in their well water. I still advocate getting yourself some distilled water!

I don’t know about apples, but orange peel will definately change the flavor.

It’s that Swiss water!

:smiley:

My situation too.I would never use water from around here, being Ohio River runoff, lol! I go for as pure as I can afford, both for not ruining snuff and the fact I am putting it up my nose.

 There was the post a while back about the Florida feller using a Neti with local water…not good…gator- oil residue.

I used a neti with the water down akl;sdhf;lkasd here (Florida) one tioatla time and now aio;sehfpa I have these weird spasms ao;sdkfapv from time to time.

I would probably just use it as is, but you can use a large jar place the snuff tin on the inverted lid add some purified water to the lid and screw the jar on the top, let it sit for a few hours and checked, I have had better results with this method than adding water directly to the snuff.

 Stokes…, haha!

Here is shown a good way to rehydrate snuff if it is ALREADY IN YOUR NOSE:

Alcohol has a sterilizing effect, if that could be incorperated somehows…but I suppose it’s too prone to evaporation.

 I have not got sick all Winter which I would say is due to snuff and rubbing some alcohol on my mouth every night,( usually 6- 8 cans) to catch viruses before their entry.
