SG SP No 1 - JH Wilson Top Mill homage

My recent order from My Smoking Shop included a few tins of Samual Gawith SP No 1 which is sold as a homage/clone/copy of JH Wilson’s Top Mill which is only available in 5 gram small tins. I was quite looking forwards to this. What i found was a snuff that was much lighter in colour (light tan), hardly any burn and much less flavour (in particular it lacked the pepperiness) than Top Mill. Its quite a mild easy to use snuff but in comparison a vastly watered down version of the original. I’m a big SG fan but i’ve had rather duff luck with two of their snuffs today. Anyone else tried this? What was your take?

I haven’t to be honest, but then I can’t see a point to me buying a snuff which pays homage to another which I can readily get hold of :-? I like plenty of SG snuffs, and I like JHW SP1 (awaiting receipt of my first tin of Top Mill). I can understand it if they were tipping their cap to something that’s fallen by the wayside, but not something current. In the meantime, I’ll just buy the SG snuffs I like and the JHW snuffs I like … :-??

I think it is amazing, but I look at it as a stand alone snuff rather than a take on Top Mill. I love it for what it is and I would recommend it to anyone. I’ve bought mine from mysmokingshop and on there it’s available in 25g tins or two sizes of bulk which Top Mill isn’t. I’ve had it in a vac 25g tin and bulk . I think that is the main reason they’ve tried to pay ‘homage’, because most people would like to buy in big tins or bulk. Personally, I wouldn’t say it was ‘watered down’, but I guess I’m not really comparing it to Top Mill. TM is one of my all time favourites and like you say, I don’t really see the similarity. Sorry, that was a bit ‘rambling’.
