SG KB Original

I’m working my way through a tin of KB Original; pretty snuff, the grind:moisture ratio is spot on and it’s very easy to take. Despite what I consider a reasonably fine tuned sense of smell and taste, I’ll be damned if I can figure out what this scent is. I’m getting a citrus baby powder scent. Not bad, but not sure where it will fit in my rotation. So, the question remains: Is KB Plain truly plain? Or is it scented with some mystery ingredients? Your help as always is greatly appreciated.

from the SG web site, http://www.samuelgawith.co.uk/default.asp?PageId=2 : Kendal Brown (KB) (Plain or scented) Moist Coarse Dark Light Citrus Single Kendal Brown Special Moist Coarse Dark Light Citrus Mixture Original Kendal Brown Moist Coarse Dark Light Citrus Mixture

@chefdaniel I love the KB Plain. It’s kind of chocolaty or something but I don’t detect any citrus. It’s one of my favorite snuffs. I could take it all day. Good smoky tobacco flavor! I have never had KB Original so I don’t know how it compares but I would say the plain is plain for a Kendal Brown.

I tried SG KB original and was sold on it straight away, I think of it as the ‘brown bread’ of snuff - it’s somehow got a wholesome wholemeal thing going on. It was out of stock when I re-ordered, so I got some KB special instead, not much different to my mind, perhaps just a bit more flavoursome. Going to have to try to order some Plain, though I thought I read somewhere that they don’t make it now, like McCombie. I miss that one, really loved the clean tobacco scent.

Well, that’s alright then!

If it’s plain, why does it have a floral/geranium scent? This review is from the highly esteemed @Juxtaposer‌, please kind sir, enlighten this thread with your wisdom and insight. You always have spot-on reviews and I respect your opinion. If it is floral, is it in the natural tobacco or an added scent? The geranium in F&T snuffs are over the top and make me gag, so if KB Plain is in the vicinity of those, I’ll pass. The more I try KB Original, the more I like it.

My tin of KB Plain is plain, I can detect no flavoring other than fermented tobacco and it is identical to my tin of Viking Brown

Perfect. I like Viking Brown. Will try the KB Plain soon as possible.

KB Original is one of my faves. I bought 500g’s of it straight from the factory. It smells like no other. Divine!

I just can’t get on with this snuff! I am a newcomer to the snuff scene though and perhaps it’s just my naïve palate but the sweet perfume and smokey notes of this snuff are too sickly for me I think. I love the coarse moist texture and the level “nico-wollop” but I find the flavour and scent overpowering. Maybe this is a trait of dark, coarse snuffs? Smoke is not a flavour I love, unless its on meat  I stay away from island whiskies for the same reason. Sorry to put a negative spin on this forum favourite, I bought the sgkbo based on the sterling reviews it has here, but I’m afraid this snuff is not for me. I will persevere with her though, maybe I’ll come around once my snout has become properly seasoned. NG

I’d say stick with it @NewGuy. I wasn’t sold initially but now love the stuff. Moist, rich tobacco with a pleasing citrus (orange) peel scent in the background. Reasonable nic too.

Rich is right @Franknsnuff‌, too rich I feel, think its gonna stay in the jar and only be dipped into once in a while, like I say perhaps I’ll come around one day

I did something similar and couldn’t agree more. It goes with English beer unlike anything else I’ve tried - and I’ve tried a lot!

That’s exactly how I felt about F&T Santo Domingo, New Guy - I’d bought the small size, and was going to use it up just because I’d paid good money for it, but it was like WoS Best Dark without all the bits I like, and too coarse and heavy, too. I’m now half way through a big tin, and will need to order another soon…

I’m still working my way through the three SG Kendal Brown offerings, and on my third tin of Plain, my current favorite of the trio. But. Of all the Kendal Browns out there, and I include Roderick’s brilliant Berwick Brown in the mix, my preference for plain is surprisingly the Gawith Hoggarth and for scented Berwick Brown. I hit the SG Plain often, but for different moods/times/beverages. I like to switch between Bernard GVd and GH Kendal Brown with dark beer. I like to do the same with SG Plain and Berwick Brown with tea and coffee, and evenings with *ICBMs (Icy Cold Bombay Martini). Gin and scented Kendal Brown have an affinity for my sense of smell and taste. *“One is not enough. Two is too many. Three is just right.”

I enjoy GH Kendal brown in a 50/50 mix with SG Kendal brown original, perfect for cold winter evenings.
