SG Irish D and No 1 High Mill

Through the good offices of FarleyFlavours we got together a bulk buy of Samuel Gawith snuffs, which have turned out to be pretty nice. I dont use Sammy that much but the two I got have made me a real fan: Irish D original: Of all the toasts I’ve tried this has to be one of the most distinctive. It is extremely light and finely ground and very penetrating; one of those that requires handling gently as too hard a sniff would probably make your head explode. It has a very smoky top note and behind that is a sweet, subtle scent. It fits in with the description of a lot of US snuffs: dry, dusty and powerful. Not a snuff to be taken lightly and definately not for the beginner. Terrific stuff. No 1 High Mill: A delicious, dark, scented SP. This is a superb snuff, sweet and richly scented. I get all kinds of flavours coming through with this from a fruty top note to a deep spicy base. Its got that old fashioned English snuff taste that you would expect from a company like SG. I don’t know is this is one of their long time mixes, but it tastes like our snuffing forefathers in the 18th century would have enjoyed it. Maybe a little to involved for an all day snuff but a great desert pinch as you are passing the port. If you’ve not tried SG snuffs, these are akin to the sorts of snuff that Wilson’s or De Kralingse produce. The snuff comes in 25g tins that make you realise why Toque has been nominated for an award rather than SG as they are fairly unwieldly and not something most people would carry in their pockets Great snuff though…

Talking of tins, which I seem to do quite a lot, I must be sooo boring, however the new Toque ones are a lot better. I’m never mentioning tins again now…

Hi Snuffster - Can’t wait to try these. SPs and toasts are two of my favorites. I just received my new snuff boxes from Onefortheroad, I will carry my SP’s in the padauk and the fine dry snuffs in the zebrawood. These boxes are very classy, well made and a bargain.

I received some No. 1 High Mill from Snuffstore this morning, I’m quite impressed. I also ordered some J&H Wilson’s SP No. 1 which is also quite nice, not as good as SP100 or Toque Original but definate;y in third place. I also received some McChrystals Jip which is soooooo much better than O&G which I used to love I really can’t stand now. It is like the menthol part of O&G without the camphor. I also received my samples from Namrata which I haven’t had a chance to try yet, but I’m very impressed with the new packaging and range of flavours. Stefan

Stitch - have they arrived yet?

Not yet. Yours have gone gone out this morning in time for the early pick up. It will take maybe a week to get there.

Thanks mate, hopefully it will be with you soon

How does the SG SP compare to the Wilson’s product?

There really isn’t a comparison. The Wilsons is a plain SP and the SG quite well flavoured, I’ve not really come across anyhting like it, think maybe along the lines of one of the sweeter Molens snuffs.
