In my most recent order from Mr snuff, I received a 10g tap box ofElmo’s. It was coarse and dry. It looks just like a crushed cigarette tobacco. It tasted great though. Real smokey and tonquin esqe. But it was very dry. Did I get an old tin? I love the scent but I don’t think I’m going to order more if its really dry like this. Who all enjoys this regularly?
I haven’t tried the Elmo’s yet, but my experience has been that the SG tap boxes are not at all air tight. If it’s been on the supplier’s shelf for very long, it has been dry. If you like the flavor, I wouldn’t hesitate to buy a 26 gram tin.
That’s what I assumed. This box didn’t say Elmo’s reserve either. Just plain Elmo’s. Did they just run out of space on the 10g box’s?
I have Elmo’s Reserve in a tin and is not dry all. Avoid tap boxes if u can. It’s well worth the extra for the tins.
Ohiosnuffer, we are so far and few here in the u.s., I suppose we can claim entire states lol Thanks for the advise.
I wonder how long it sat before it dried out…
That snuff should be very moist. Sad that you had to learn the hard way not to by SG snuffs in tap boxes. They can dry out very fast, even a couple of days out from the mill. The moist ones like Elmo’s Reserve are the worst affected. SG won’t stop making them and the vendors won’t stop carrying them. Unsuspecting newbies buy them and then hate the snuff or the snuff maker not knowing that its the container that caused the problem.
I guess its not all bad. I do like the slide type tap box and I suppose I will reuse it with some fresh Elmo’s. I’m assuming its moistened with water and not oil?
Yes, water moistened. You can rehydrate it to a useable state, although you can’t restore the original freshness. I wouldn’t reuse that rotten box for anything other than an oil moistened snuff. Either that or target practice, rock dropping practice, recycling practice, etc. anything that will destroy it so it can’t ruin any more snuff.

If you like the slide tap feature you should buy a snuff box with a slide feature. only put a day or two worth of snuff in it. that way you will have the tap function and fresh snuff. :-bd
@xander: you bring up a good point about vendors still carrying the 10g tap boxes. We do because it is a cheaper intro to SG snuffs. however if, as you say, it actually puts people off otherwise fine snuff it is pointless. I think it is time we stopped stocking these.
I agree. I’ve always thought it was like shooting oneself in the foot. Although the SG toast I bought sometime ago in a tap box didn’t seem to suffer for it, though it probably wouldn’t last long term. If it were my shop, I’d at the very least drop the moist snuffs in tap boxes. The others might be ok if I had a very fast turnover, but it would have to be really fast, like a few days to a week at most.

Do you know where I can find a snuff box with a tap feature?
the snuffhouse and mrsnuff plastic snuffboxes sold on mrsnuff both have the function i believe.
Thanks! I’ll add a couple to my cart!
I decided to hydrate this stuff in my nose. It works quit well

It’s just Elmo displaying a lack of reserve.
Elmo was a dog. He’s on the vac tin.
