I’ve got a feeling I may be on my own here but I get no coffee scent at all with this. I got a tin yesterday and gave it a try expecting great things, having read various reviews. Not sure what smell I’m getting but it reminds me of a very sweet pipe tobacco that I can’t remember the name of. It’s not that the scent is unpleasant, just missing the vital coffee.

not on your own. i wasnt usually a fan of sweeter pipe tobaccos, so might explain why i cant stand the smell of sg coffee. though i have to ask, did you get tapbox or 25g tin?

25g tin. I keep on trying it but the more I try the less I like it.

Must be a bad batch out there. Mine are about a year old and have a rich dark coffee scent. What I’ve had is the closest to cofee beans scent I’ve found.

I called My Smoking Shop where I got it from, they said send it back and they will replace it from a new box. Great customer service from them, couldn’t have been more helpful.

Latakia is the wood-smoked tobacco used in english blends, to simplify things. Now, I do smell a bit of coffee in there, but I still mainly smell latakia. Not bad, but it’s not my preferred pipe tobacco “genre”, and I was really hoping for strong, black coffee instead.

@WWhermit I got no Latakia smell in there. The pipe tobacco it reminded me of was Peter Stokkebye Kentucky Nougat. Amazing how different people get so many different scents from the same product.

i didnt get latakia, latakia was a favourite of mine when i smoked the pipe. (reminds me, i should dig it out, maybe sell it for a small sum).

A lot of the SG rappee styles have a strong smokey character to them. Its more pronounced in the plain ones such as London Brown, Black Rappee and Scotch Black, but its definitely present in Coffee and many of the other “Dark” snuffs such as Elmo’s Reserve. I’m not sure how close it comes to Latakia. I never got the plastic scent some of you guys are talking about, but a few SG’s (and Jaxons) always left me with something of a medicinal scent (and I don’t mean menthol), but maybe we’re talking about the same thing.

Interesting–I always wondered what was in the rest of the aroma. My feeling with most coffee snuffs is that they recreate the scent rather than the taste of coffee, if that makes any sense.

I’m eking out my last few pinches of Black Coffee - my 10g tapbox is almost empty and has been fabulous throughout, full of delicious coffee scent! SnuffStore haven’t had any for months, so I’ve had to order Fubar Black Joe (Cafe 11 and Toque Espresso both being out of stock too), but I’ll be getting more S&G as soon as I can.

To me it is the ONLY coffee flavored snuff I have tried that really smells/tastes like coffee. Absolutely nothing sweet, just black coffee. Cafe 11 smells/tastes of coffee with cream and top shelf liquor, WOW Coffee bite tastes of coffee with cream and sugar and all of the others taste very similar, but cannot define what it is. I have drunk thousands of pots of coffee of all kinds and hang out in coffee shops as I can so have some idea of what coffee is/should smell/taste like and most suposedly coffee flavored snuffs are like way off base for me. Of course, we are all different.

@stogie it may be that heat is what is missing. You are welcome to test this theory, just don’t hurt yourself. “caution contents of pinch may be hot!”

I just opened my tin from MSS which I ordered yesterday! and …drum roll… It’s… COFFEE. YEAHHHHH!!! Black coffee aroma wafting from the tin as soon as I crowbarred it open. but there does seem to be a lot of vanilla in there too, big vanilla afterscent. Could do without that so points off there. Beats the bejesus out of that Tia Maria I got from MS. That must really have gone off and any coffee or scent evapourated. The vanilla made me crave a pinch of Mull of Oa and wow that was fantastic afterwards but I can still get the vanilla from the Black Coffee coming through now that the Oa has calmed down? Thats my first impression so the fact that I don’t immediately hate it is a very good sign as things usually improve as I get used to new snuff. If the vanilla would dissapear and leave the coffee then that would be great, whether it will? More likely probably to happen the other way round if I don’t keep it fresh. Just popped out for some shopping. Vanilla all the way and I even blew out my nose before going out and I still get a hint of coffee and a lot of vanilla an hour later and bear in mind the last thing I snuffed was Mull of Oa which is pretty strongly scented and long lasting and has no vanilla but I only had one pinch of that to the three I had of Black Coffee. I’m liking this Black Coffee already. The vanilla when out I actually found very pleasant and I still smell it. The scent longevity seems to be very high but not overpowering or unpleasant. This is shaping up to be very good snuff.

Just got back from holiday to find a new tin of SG Black Coffee on the doorstep along with a tin of Viking Brown. Still not getting coffee but agree with @I_snuff_therefore___ lots of vanilla but also something nutty. NO COFFEE! Must be me

Tried the Dholakia coffee cream 10g I received in the same order and that seems to be a nice rich coffee, somewhat caramel. I think that I would order that again in a larger size before Black Coffee or any other coffee I have tried to date. I think it is the best so far. The Dholakia Chocolate Orange in the order is also very nice and I’d order that again also for sure. The Dholakia Gin I don’t like but if you like Gin it’s going to be great.

@Basement_Shaman If you were UK you could have my 25g tin with pleasure but postage to US would be too much. @I_snuff_therefore___ I may give the Dholakia Coffee Cream a go. Will have to see if I can get it here. *Edit* Just found it on My Smoking Shop website.

I’m certain I have no vanilla in my Black coffee. Must be from a different batch. Though the idea of Vanilla in Black Coffee is not at all repugnant to me.

When I opened the tin I think the coffee might have mostly wafted away. When I smell in the tin I only get vanilla but when I take some and think about it then I can find the Black Coffee. I added some to my coffee blend and it basically turned that to vanilla. I’m really wondering will it change with time. I know the WOS Coffee got better over time as the amonia dissapeared and it dried out a bit. The WOS Irish Coffee worsened as the nice whisky faded almost completely. Now I’ve opened a new Wos Coffee cream and it’s very chemical but might resolve whereas the Irish Coffee fresh is very nice. An older WOS Whisky I have has all but lost all of its flavour. I also added some Dholakia Coffee Cream to my blend and that made it richer and sweeter but the blend is really great in that you get all these different coffees coming through at different times and vanilla.

I ordered some Dholakia Coffee Cream from My Smoking Shop - hoping it will arrive tomorrow. @I_snuff_therefore___ I know what you mean about “thinking about it” to get the coffee scent, I sometimes get it but mostly don’t. However, I’m really starting to enjoy it now, whether I get coffee or not.

Hope you like the Coffee Cream. It’s going to be different but we seem to pick up the same things so I think you will like it. Just had another pinch from it. Very nice and you will definitely smell coffee just sniffing the open tub. Really good stuff.

@I_snuff_therefore___ I’ve tried the Coffee Cream, very nice but not very long lasting. As an experiment I put a small tin with a bit of SG Black Coffee inside a bigger tin with some ground coffee and left it 48 hours, better but still not what I’m looking for. That said, I’m loving the snuff as it is.

I thought it lasted pretty good but admittedly nothing in comparison to the vanilla/coffee of the Black Coffee. I think that one is amongst the longest lasting of any snuff out there, a bit to long. At least the Dholakia is coffee without any doubt. The chocolate orange after the coffee cream I found really nice & I’m even liking the Gin snuffs I bought now. Very nice in the good weather and then there is the Dholakia White a recent game changer for me. So ordered more already as I always want to have a stock of that and the Black also. Haven’t even thought about the Black Coffee since I tried it but if you do crack improving it then let me/us know. The White is getting the attention at the moment. Still to try the Swiss Chocolate. The White made me forget I got that one also.

Well, I got my G&H Tia Maria and Fubar Black Joe. The Tia Maria is nice, it’s like the box of Black Coffee I had but more like a single shot rather than a double, if you see what I mean. As for the Black Joe, well now, I have no idea what coffee is like if you have it in India, but if it tastes sort of like cough mixture with a shot of Bostik glue, then they’ve got it spot on. It’s a weird one. I’ve aired it on and off for a few days now, and it’s usable, quite nice in it’s own way, but to paraphrase the great Douglas Adams, almost completely unlike a cup of coffee. Snuffstore’s got S&G Black Coffee back in stock now, might just have to place another order…

…or, for those of us in the US, you could buy some Kendal Brown Plain and let it marinate with a few fresh, oily coffee beans for a week or longer. Bam, SG Black Coffee!!! For those of you that think Black Coffee is “vanilla-ish,” (I don’t), this may be even better.

@HR_pufnsnuff I think the Fugazi Black Joe is almost like a “malted” flavor. At least that’s what I get.

Just mixed up some Grunt with Fugazi Black JOe. It actually works and tones down the sweetness of the Fugazi. I would say it is more of a pure coffee scent than the Black Joe alone. I like this mix. Two of my favorites playing nice together.

My sister liked the Dholakia Swiss Chocolate we opened this evening at our BBQ so I offered it to her to take with her. She bought me a pack of cigarettes but I declined. I told her to try it before bed to see if it helped her sleep her being epileptic and often having disturbed sleep so lets see if it works? I then asked her out of curiosity if she would try the Black Coffee and she said she would and that in fact she drank black coffee. So she tried it and got vanilla but she did like it. Said oh lovely as soon as she smelled the open tin and then vanilla. She normally says yuck if she smells Snuff. I guess another one for the vanilla camp.

I would have to agree. It’s almost as if SG ran a batch of black coffee after one of the above that you mention (haven’t personally tried those as not interested in vanilla snuff) with the same machinery that was still full of vanilla and I ended up with 3/4 vanilla to 1/4 coffee. Lundy Foot has some vanilla but it’s nothing to the level of this Black Coffee.

Maybe I’m wrong? It is rather sweet though so I wonder how they did that. With Auld Alliance it says on MrSnuff that they added vanilla pods to enhance natural sweetness. How did they do it with Lundy Foot I wonder?

I agree that I get quite a bit of sweetness from Lundy foot, though no vanilla. I also get no vanilla from SG Black Coffee, though there is some kind of ‘high note’ that isn’t just black coffee, to me. I find that that scent mellows over the course of a couple days away from it’s bulk container, though the coffee mellows right along with it.

I think the Dholakia Coffee Cream coffee part has faded very quickly also which is a pity. I would not order Black Coffee again based on the tin I have so I happily leave it all for you lovers of this snuff and no point in getting more Dholakia either. Looks like I will be sticking with the WoS Irish Coffee but maybe someday I will get to try this reputedly wonderful Cafe 11 and still to try the Toque Expresso but I don’t think it has had many glowing reports or what about the Jaxons Coffee Cream? Tia Maria is also off the list. As a side note I have added both the SG and Dholakia Gin & Tonic to the reorder list. Really had a turnaround with these two and they are both quite different, the Dholakia having the rich tobacco base. They seem to make a nice alternative to my normal toast use.

@I_snuff_therefore___ Try the Cafe 11 when you can, it is my favourite snuff by far, and worth the premium price. Toque Espresso was a disappointment to me so I won’t bother with that again. I may give the WoS Irish Coffee a go, but what I really want is a snuff that smells like a freshly opened bag of ground coffee. The quest will continue!

@Wanderer I’m begining to think at the moment it’s maybe best just to make a nice cup of coffee and choose some other snuff that goes well with it but strangely I do like my made up coffee blend of snuff (using various coffee snuffs + some Lundy Foot & Dragun) with a coffee drink? From memory though even freshly opened ground coffee goes off very quickly even when refridgerated so I gave up on that and just use instant granules and I survive pretty well. The Irish Coffee from WoS is maybe the equivalent.

Had a brainwave. I’m going to give the Black Coffee the same therapy as I gave the Tia Maria into which I blended some F&T Morocco and Princess Special and which I’m still loving (just had 3 good pinches and I seem to get some sweet earthy apple scent now, great), so I will be able to make another batch once this one is finished. It might work even better with the stronger Black Coffee.

Well, I decided to order three tapboxes of Black Coffee at SnuffStore to keep me going, and though it’s listed there again the stuff is still out of stock! For the last three nights I’ve taken to opening my box of Tia Maria right up by taking the side right off and leaving it in a sealed plastic box of ground coffee, and it’s got noticeably stronger in scent so it’ll work 'til I get lucky and the Black Coffee is finally back in stock, but I need my fix of the real thing! Driving me mad waiting, and at this rate I’m going to miss out on their free delivery deal…

Feel more sorry for me having none. It’s all SnuffStore do (when they do), and I like the simplicity of their ordering system. The one box I managed to order seemed to be moist enough, held it’s moistness, and certainly seemed to have loads more flavour than the original poster reckons he got from his 25g tin.

Wow, now there’s an idea; snuff dispensers - Can you imagine a vending machine full of a variety of snuff flavours and brands, all ready to be yours at the insertion of a few coins! As for these mental tins, are they planning to deliver by thought transference?

This may be an older thread, but… Just got the SG Black Coffee. Its quite lovely, but I get only the smallest hint of coffee. I can’t identify the other scents, but they are there, with coffee hiding amonst them. The only coffee snuff I’ve found that I really like is the Poschl Grado Caffe. Strong, great smelling, wish they omit the menthol, but its still the truest coffee flavor I have tried. The Fugazi Black Joe is so fine, and oiled, it hits my throat, getting in the way of enjoying the cafe au lait flavor. Its getting better with age, and some airing out. Might mix in a toast to even out the oiliness.

@mrmanos if your looking for coffee snuff you might want to give Wow Coffee Bite a try.

Thanks for the tip. I like the SG coffee more and more. I’m on my 4th day of trying it out. I notice the vanilla quite a lot, and some other great flavors, coffee seems to be the least I get from it. But that said, it still is a very nice snuff. I’ll try the WOW next order. My other technique is to take small pinches of freshly ground coffee, followed by pinches of White Elephant or a toast. I did that this morning with my newly acquired SG Irish D Lite, and it was quite nice. The coffee scent, mixed w/ the Irish was nice. I always like experimenting. I still have my home made cigar/ coffee snuff even though its a little on the primitive style. Next time I try to mix up a batch I will use the basic formula I’ve read about here on SH.

black coffee- although at the time of trying this snuff i only detected a tiny resemblance to any coffee i ever tried, since trying it, i have noticed a similar taste in a liquor from xoriguer in their tasting room, and just now i am trying nescafe Azera instant coffee. it smells almost the same from memory. looks like SG black coffee tastes of coffee after all… just not any real coffee. multiple reviewers on amazon uk describe this azera as tasting like crappy instant coffee from the 70s. i was never in the 70s… but that description says a lot.

I visited Samuel Gawith in Kendal and picked up four tins direct from the mill, three are in the fridge and the other is well and truly in my daily routine, and to me it definitely is strongly coffee scented, I love it as much as I ever did. While I was there I also got some Vanilla, and that’s made on the same tobacco base as the coffee - I wonder if you’ve got a mislabelled tin? Either way, they’re both delicious.
