second thoughts

have you ever bought some snuff and was less then impressed and so you tried it out a few months later and it was a completely different tune? I just recently retried Toque Violet. Truly one of Toque’s longest lasting scents. When I first tried it I nearly gagged from the soapy cloying powerfulness of it. After having tried it, fallen asleep and woken up with it’s aroma still in my beak, I must say I am quite impressed. It’s aroma is more pleasing then i remembered it.

I was the same way about any and all American Scotches. I used to absolutely dispise them, felt they were an abomination. Now I am really starting to enjoy them and am absolutely hooked to the gills on Rooster

Previous comments along these lines prompted me to get a container for just such use jack. If a snuff doesn’t register with me within the first day or so I simply put it in my “Thinking About It” box. Try it again, sometime…

Toque Berwick Brown really improved on my second visit, as did their Lime Toast. Still have my reservations about the their Violet though, although the intensity has subsided slightly. McChrystals SP and S’nuff also became favourites after initial disappointment. Other snuffs have become worse with second visits: Wilsons Jasmine, Gawith Hoggarth Jockey Club, Wilsons Morlaix, Toque Espresso, Poschl Red Bull

I hated Navy Plain when I first tried it. I got a very fresh tin and it was full of ammonia. Togeather with the smoke flavour it smelled like cat pee in my nose. After a couple of months of it sitting the amonia was gone and I start every day with a big pinch of Navy Plain.

It seems completely normal guys. I swing between love and hate for various snuffs for years. I wonder if - as the taste parts of our nose, mouth etc - are all plumbed in together, that what you have eaten over the last day or so can play a part, and its just accidental that you have a ‘clean’ pallete when you next try someting you previously hated? Just a thought, I’m no expert on physiology!

I was that way with Toque Raspberry. I hated it the first time I tried and sneezed continuously. A month or two later I dug it out and really liked it.

I must admit QWS Jasmine was repulsive to me, and now it’s a welcome change of flavor. It’s very wise this “Thinking About it” box rather than making a mixing disaster like I have with the first bullet.

I initially offered a rather lukewarm assessment of Toque Natural Toast, feeling that it was all right, although rather nondescript. Now that I’m nearly finished with the tin, I’ve since realized that this is much better and more unique than I had originally thought. The more I have, the more I do like it. I will definitely buy more, even though I have no illusions that it will ever replace Wilsons No. 22 as my staple snuff. My infatuations with most flavored snuffs are generally short-lived. Plain toasts and scotches and SPs are what I always return to. I suppose those varieties are long-established classics for a reason.

Exactly right: something like WH Best SP has been made since the 1700s and a plainer sniff you won’t find. I can’t imagine the sticky toffee double choc chip with maple syrup types lasting three hundred years. Snuffing for most people - certainly for me - involves the daily feeding of an addiction. Feeding on sweeties everyday would get very boring very quickly.

I like sweeties! Maybe it’s a girl thing. I tend to favor the fruits over the candies though.

I often have the impression, the nose (or whichever part of the system is responsible for this effect) adjusts to the flavours with time and repetition. Although the snuff doesn´t really change that much after 2-5 days in an airtight container you receive it differently then. And somehow your nose (or brain) “remembers” this effect/feeling/flavour afterwards. So, it´s good to have a drawer or something to put the initial “fail snuffs” in and give them another try some time later.

@ Red Star: Camphor and Mild ?

Well, the Camphor and Mild was not an outright failure, but quite disappointing at first. Dug it out after a while and noticed, its effect and flavour is received much better than before. Same thing happened with S´nuff and the Kensington. But it also worked the other direction with the WoS Jasmine. Very nice the first 3 days but after that it got worse and worse. Didn´t get better after giving it a break.
